Welcome to Opoutere Coastal Camping, the Coromandel's last great secret. This relaxed coastal hideaway is a haven for exploring beautiful forest, beach and harbour - or just chilling out.
Remote and untouched…. just the way we like it!
We are a small, rustic campground with spacious powered or non-powered sites, and basic cabins available.
Meander through ancient Pohutukawas to the summit, watch the sunrise or gaze at more stars than you have ever seen before and enjoy nature at its best with over 5km of unspoilt white sand, rolling surf and tranquil waters of the Wharekawa Harbour. All this in less than two hours from Auckland.
Opoutere Beach is located on the Coromandel Peninsula on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
The campground is situated at the beginning of the beautiful and untouched 5 kilometre beach, with no roads to cross, just a lovely 2 min stroll through the pine forest.
Opoutere is a great location from which to explore some of New Zealand's best scenery in the Coromandel Peninsula. Hot Water Beach and access to Cathedral Cove can be reached within a 45 min drive North.

January 22, 2017.
Epic road trip to surf Whangamata and Opoutere beaches in Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand with Josh (South Africa, local to NZ), Cheyenne (Germany), and Melissa (UK). Not too much impressive surfing going on, as this was only my third time and the waves were crazy from a recent Tsunami, but the beaches were absolutely stunning. One for the books!

Day 4 of the Ultimate Waterman competition kicked off with an early morning drive from Auckland to the Coromandel Mandel Penninsula for the shortboard surfing event of the series. As Cyclone Pam began to fill in, the athletes were able to compete in some fun-size punchy beachbreak conditions.

Apart from messing the setup once, it went really well until the clouds rolled in. But, you have to work with what comes at you.
