The Christmas Market in Oradea , Romania
I am continuing my journey in finding the best Christmas Market and Christmas Destination in Romania. My next stop is in my favorite city, a place close to my heart and this is Oradea. I spent about 5 years in this city during my studies and 1st job. It is good to be back.
Since I was in Oradea the last time a lot has been invested in the city, in its restoration and modernization. The main road from the city center was closed down and transformed into a big beautiful square and this is where the Christmas market is happening.
The Black Eagle, The Moon Church, The city hall and so on came to live through the awesome winter projections on their wall. The skating park, the big Christmas globe and the stylish Christmas tree lights up the entire square offering a story like look to the Christmas market.
As soon as you enter into the market you can smell the good smoky sausage, stakes and the every present kurtoskalacs(sweet bread).
The locals and tourists are enjoying the skating park and the Christmas moody atmosphere. Oradea is more alive than ever before, I love it!
Somewhere 7 years back the fortress was in ruins. I remember having an office within the fortress and we had to move out due to the place falling apart. Today the entire fortress is unrecognizable, once again an important representative symbol of Oradea is fully functional and shining.
The fortress is in a form of a star, something that can be observed from above and the edges easily can be observed from the ground.
Today you can go and observe medieval knight weapons and traditional knitting machines. The fortress also holds an outdoor theater where occasionally activities are happening, as well as holds a fortress festival once a year where fighting demonstrations are happening and other traditional shows.
Oradea pleasantly impressed me and definitely it became one of the most attractive city's in Transylvania.
Does it have the best Christmas market? Is it the best seasonal holiday destination? It is definitely on the top of the list, but for now let's move on and further explore the other locations.
My next stop is Cluj Napoca.

About this video #visitOradea :
The Black Eagle Palace the one-time hotel was built between 1907-1909 on the base of the old Eagle guesthouse. The ensemble equipped with a glass covered passage making the connection between three streets became the most important realization of the architect couple Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab. The glass painting with the black eagle the ensemble's emblem was executed in 1909 in the Oradean Neumann workshop.
The cathedral of the orthodox episcopate of Oradea, the Church with Moon was built between 1784-1790, in baroque style with neoclassical influences after the plans of the architect Éder Jakab. The inside pictures were realized by the Teodorovici brothers and by Paul Murgu. It has a bell-tower of 55 m high.
The St. Ladisla's Square got its actual name of Union's Square between the two Word Wars. Here we may find the building of the City-hall, the Greek-Catholic Bishop Palace, the Moon Church, the Black Eagle Palace, the Greek-Catholic Church St. Ierarh Nicolae and the St. Ladisla's Church. In 1924 in the center of the square was placed the statue of king Ferdinand I the founder of Big Romania. Nowadays here is placed the statue of Mihai Viteazul, place where year to year the citizens and the authorities of the city fulfill there respect to the national heroes.
The fortress of Oradea how it is today - pentagonal, with battlements at its corners and water ditch - was built between 1570-1618 by Italian architects remained the best kept Italian renaissance fortress of central Europe. Between 1097-1557 served as residence of the Roman Catholic bishop of Oradea period when the fortress became an important religious and cultural center. In the fortress functioned a library, an astronomical observatory, a printing house and a school. In the catholic church and in its cemetery found their eternal peace not less then seven crowned person: Ladisla I (died on the 25th of July 1095 in Zvolen, taken to Oradea between 1130-1134), Andrei II (had been buried in 1235 in Oradea, later taken to the abbey of Agria), Alexander II, Ladisla IV the Cunsenian (killed in 1290 at Cheresig), queen Beatrix (wife of Carol Robert de Anjou, in 1319), queen Mary (wife of Sigismund de Luxembourg, in 1396) and king Sigismund de Luxembourg (in 1437).

City Highlights
Located just 8 miles from the Hungarian border and spanning both shores of the Crisu Repede River, the elegant city of Oradea is a great starting point for exploring Romania.
First documented in 1113, under the Latin name Varadinum, the city was administered at various times by the Principality of Transylvania, the Ottoman Empire, and the Habsburg Monarchy. In 1598, the Oradea fortress was besieged and, on August 27, 1660, it fell to the Ottoman raids, only to be seized in 1692 by the Austrians.
Until the construction of flood-banks along the length of the Crisu Repede River, Oradea was facing constant flooding threats. In 1836 a large part of the town was destroyed by fire. The picturesque town of present-day Oradea was rebuilt in the 18th century to the plans of Viennese engineer Franz Anton Hillebrandt following the then-trendy Austrian architectural style called Secession with its richly decorated facades of pale pink, blue, green and white. In addition to the many Baroque buildings, Oradea is remarkable for its particularly rich collection of Art Nouveau architecture.
Landmarks
Union Square or the Little Square
(Piata Unirii)
City Hall (Primaria)
The robust, asymmetrical, City Hall (Primaria) was designed, in 1903, by architect Kalman Rimanoczy Jr. as well.
The building features a 170 feet-tall tower with four clocks – one on each of its sides - and three observation decks.
St Ladislau church
The oldest church in the town square, was built between 1721-1741, belongs to Roman Catholic worship and is dedicated to St. Ladislaus.
The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru), located in Piata Unirii, was built between 1907 and 1909 by Hungarian architects Marcell Komor and DezsoJakab. A glass-roofed art nouveau shopping arcade (Pasajul Vulturul Negru) runs through the two main buildings of the palace. Inside you will find shops, a four-star hotel, cafes and a cinema.
The The Greek Catholic Bishopric Palace, located opposite the Church of the Moon, was designed by local architect Kalman Rimanoczy Jr. Built in 1903, the edifice features a sophisticated eclectic combination of decorative elements: Neo-Romanesque, Neo- Gothic, Neoclassical and Neo-Byzantine.

Cetatea Oradea /Oradea Fortress
If we hear about history at school and see it at the museums then this is the ideal place to feel it. The fortress stands as a witness in time keeping though its charm from once upon a time. It tells stories and shares to the visitor glimpses of the history it once witnessed. Oradea Fortress is today a living proof of history, reminding all of us of something it used to be. The fortress is one of the symbols of the city situated on the banks of Crisul Repede River and one of the main
places for its events.
Oradea Fortress was in an ample process of reconstruction on plans designed both by architects and historians. In the fall of 2015, the fortress was re-open to the public for visiting. The symbol objective of the city was reborn and brings joy to all those who get by.

Oradea, Romania City Tour
A tour through Oradea in Romania. I somehow ended up there recently for a night (as the city is very close to Hungary). Oradea is quite nice to see for a day. If you're in Budapest, and want to get a sneak-peak of Romania, go there! :D
It was quite fun doing such short city tour. Will probably continue doing shorter videos... I guess! :D
Very big thanks to Dora for inviting me to her home in Oradea! She's the manager of the local co-working office!

Palatul Vulturul Negru se afla in piata Unirii.
???? Biserica cu Luna din Oradea, unica in Europa. Biserica Ortodoxa ,,Adormirea Maicii Domnului” mai este numita.
???? Cetatea Oradei

ROMANIAN STREET FOOD FESTIVAL - Romania, Oradea
It is always a pleasure for me to come back to this beautiful city. I have spent around 4.5 years in Oradea, during my studies and loved every single bit of it.
Oradea is a beautiful city, split by the Crisu Repede river and the home of many amazing architecture. It is known for baroque and art nouveau architecture, remnants of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Probably the most popular place in the city is the Black Eagle palace which holds many pubs and terraces. Another attraction would be the Moon Church which has a unique mechanism that follows the moon phases throughout the month.
Recently the 15th century fortress became quite popular due to its renovation. It played a key role throughout the history in many conflicts between the Turks, Hungarians and Austrians. Viewed from above it looks like a star and for sure it became one for the city.
Today it holds many festivals, events and even as we speak a food festival is taking place, showcasing various cousins from around the world.
If you are visiting Romania, Oradea has to be on your list, it won’t disappoint.
#Oradea #DrumuriAproape @TVRTimisoara (partea a doua)
