Thanks to Orana Wildlife Park for having us hangout with the lions. You to can go in the cage to see them yourself.

ORANA WILDLIFE PARK, CHRISTCHURCH.
Orana Wildlife Park, well worth a visit.
On arriving bout 1pm, the car park was 3/4 full. Was hoping to get there bit earlier but all good, long legs got round the huge park in good time. To be in a city and to see animals that you wont see anywhere else in NZ or even Australia, its quite a treat for us here in South Island to have Orana park featuring some fantastic animals, some which are becoming extinct.
When you see or hear around the world, people shooting animals for a bloody trophy, it really makes you wonder how anyone can put a bullet into any of these animals.
For a long time, its been the Silver Back Gorillas that have had me wanting to get there, of course other animals but by heck, these Silver backs are bloody beautiful. Its a bit like the HSV (Holden Special Vehicle) motto:
I JUST WANT ONE.
To think these gorillas are about 11,500 kilometres from their own habitat, their own country, Africa and to see them here in Christchurch and to be in such good shape, you got to hand it to the carers at Orana Park.
Not sure if there were 5 or 6 Silver Back Gorillas but such a big ape, but as you watched them, so laid back, so placid and very chilled out, relaxed animals. Interesting thing, not sure what was going on, but you see in the far corner, the gorillas sitting at the cage while behind the cage, one of Oranas staff, had the gorilla, turning, one side to the other, hands up, feet up, may have been getting a check over with small treats of fruit after each maneuver. Then so calmly, one would turn and walk away and another would step up and have the same treatment.
Hard to imagine that these gorillas could in an instant, tear the your arm from the socket, let along rip your head off, sooooo dam calm. Couldn't get over the reach when they extended their arms up the cage door, huge reach with hugh power behind them.
I know one thing, i will be going back, could sit and watch these cousins for hours.
Time to move off to the huge rhinoceros's.
Once again, such a huge animal. 6, 7 not sure, wasn't there to tally the animals up, just sit back and watch and here these huge animals that looked to be decked out in armor plating, had a huge area to roam around in. The littlest of them all loved to get into the others, head to head, pushing each other around. The large horns on some of these beasts were enormous, and i know you wouldn't want one of those horns stuck in ya, cos behind that horn is some massive weight and power. In the video you see them break into a bit of a jog, shit they cover some ground in a very short time.
On track again and off to find the cats. I am not a fan of cats at all but thats that ratty domestic cat, but wow, tigers, lions etc etc these are absolutely beautiful and seem so placid.... i want one too. ????
A large number of lions in the park and you can get quite close to them. On my next visit, i will be jumping in the cage to get out there. To those that are keen too do the same, be sure to book in advance. They only take 20 people and my luck, i missed but never mind, more time on ground amongst them.
I was lucky enough to have bugger all people around when i found two lions just chilling very near the fence and didn't take too long before they settled right in front of me at the fence, so close as you see from the camera. Ya just want to pat the big furry buggers lol... The size of some of them, wow, they are big cats and once again, very well looked after.
Now found a very curious Springbok, all these were gathered quite a few feet away, but as i got so close to the fence, one came up to the fence and took a good look then dropped his head and started horning the fence. Not sure if he wanted a pat or whether he wanted me to get the wire cutters out and let him out lol
Also there, but i think these fellows are heading back to another zoo, is Clydes mates, the orangutans.
Didnt spend much time with these as the gorillas were next door. But they are such cool, chilled animals. Could see 3 of them, 2 smaller ones and up top, could only see the back of one but he looked to be the daddy, big bugger. But end of the day, these orangutans were having a nibble then as lights were going out,of to the corner to share branch with each other.
So there ya go, if your looking for a good day out, Orana Wildlife Park is a great day away, from the other jungle you live in. Funny thing, its probably safer in there than some suburbs lol
So theres my first and not last day out at Orana Wildlife Park, Located in Christchurch, a great place to escape too and go chill with the animals.

Orana Wildlife Park visit Christchurch New Zealand
This series of videos records an afternoon visit to Orana Wildlife Park. The highlight of the visit was the Tiger encounter where a small group received an informative talk on the history and habits of the Sumatran Tigers. We were then instructed by the staff member how to correctly and safely feed the Tiger. The exciting part was actually delivering the food up close through the steel grating.Awesome.
Orana Wildlife Park, New Zealand, The zoo where tourists are caged for close encounter with lions.
Visitors to the wildlife park in Christchurch, New Zealand, are surrounded by lions at feeding time as they are driven around on the back of a flatbed truck. Zoo keepers at Orana Wildlife Park feed the carnivores through the cage to give tourists an eye-to-eye view of the king of the beasts. Lions jumps up the sides and onto the top of the moving mesh enclosure allowing people to get as close as is safe to the fearsome carnivores.

Lion Encounter, Orana Wildlife Park, Christchurch NZ. Jan 2020.
January 2020. Special Lion Encounter, popular, is a tour you can do at Orana Wildlife, which is pretty much the Zoo for Christchurch. This video is HDR 4K 30fps native. It was overcast early in the morning but cleared up by lunch time.
The Lion Feeding time on this day was at 2:30 pm but for visitors who pay for the tour, which is a little over NZ$50, we meet at 2:15 pm at a meeting point. You get to go behind the scenes and into the lion enclosure in a caged vehicle, and get 1st class views of the zoo keepers feeding the lions up close.
Well worth it. It's about a 12 minute drive from the airport. If you liked the video, remember to give it a thumbs up, and try the experience yourself.
