BATTLE OF THE ORANGES 2019 | Battaglia delle Arance | Carnevale Ivrea
The battle of the oranges in Ivrea, Italy is one of the biggest food fights in the world. Known as Battaglia delle Arance, or Storico Carnevale Ivrea in Italy, this festival is easily one of the most exciting, and was it's biggest celebration yet in 2019. It is the only orange battle in the world.
Often compared to the tomato fight in Buñol, Spain near Valencia. La Tomatina is a very different experience. Tomatoes are a joke compared to oranges. If you've been to La Tomatina before, expect a much more extreme festival.
Teams like Scacchi, Picche, Arduini, Tuchini, Diavoli, Pantera Nera, Mercenari, Credendari, Morte, team up in the 5 town squares in Ivrea over 3 days of Battle. While the festival seems to be all about oranges, it's much deeper than that and has a complex and rich history around it. Ivrea, Italia is located just outside of Turino (Torino) and not that far from Milan.
The say it started this way. In medieval times there was an evil king who enforced Ius Primae Noctis, aka Prima Nocta on all the new brides. This rule meant that the king got to deflower every woman before her husband on her wedding night. The Miller's Daughter called The Mugnaia, was brought to his quarters on her wedding night for this terrible act. She courageously grabbed his sword, and cut off his head. She freed herself, and the people of Ivrea from his tyranny. This carnival is a celebration of freedom, not citrus fruit.

The festival's origins are somewhat unclear. A popular account has it that it commemorates the city's defiance against the city's tyrant, who is either a member of the Ranieri family or a conflation of the 12th-century Ranieri di Biandrate and the 13th-century Marquis William VII of Montferrat.
Every year the citizens remember their liberation with the Battle of the Oranges, where teams of aranceri (orange handlers) on foot throw oranges (representing old weapons and stones) against aranceri riding in carts (representing the tyrant's ranks). During the 19th-century French occupation of Italy, the Carnival of Ivrea was modified to add representatives of the French army. Another adaptation of the story has the oranges used to symbolize the removed testicles of the tyrant.
The core celebration is based on a locally famous Battle of the Oranges that involves some thousands of townspeople, divided into nine combat teams, who throw oranges at each other – with considerable violence – during the traditional carnival days: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The carnival takes place in February.
Originally beans were thrown, then apples. Later, in the 19th century, oranges came to represent the stones thrown at the king's castle in order to demolish it. The origin of the tradition of throwing oranges is not well understood, particularly as oranges do not grow in the foothills of the Italian Alps and must be imported from Sicily.
There are a handful of routes that are allowed for spectators. The first is to hide behind the nets that are draped around the buildings, this is by far the safest choice and is highly recommended for those planning to attend with children. For the more adventurous spectator you can simply stay on the battlefield throughout the whole battle. This choice has to be made with certain considerations the biggest of which rogue oranges that have missed their targets and are on a trajectory right towards the middle of the battle where the spectators are located. Despite what one may expect the armored palace guards are not the ones that you have to be wary of when spectating, but the throwers on the other side of the chariots who are attempting to hit the guards. Every spectator is encouraged to purchase and wear, at all times, the Berretto Frigio/Phrygian Cap/red hat for protection. Wearing the hat signifies that you are part of the revolutionaries and will protect you from getting oranges directly thrown at you; however, as previously mentioned, if you are in the battlefield the hazard of getting hit by oranges is still a very real and essentially guaranteed occurrence. Spectators are not allowed to throw oranges as long as they are wearing their Berretto Frigio.

Thousands of revellers gathered in the small Italian town of Ivrea on Sunday to hurl 500,000 kilograms of oranges at each other.
The bizarre event commemorates an incident that is said to date back to medieval times, when the starving townspeople were freed from the tyranny of an evil baron.

Italians turn out in droves for 'Battle of the Oranges' festival
Huge crowds turned out in the northern Italian city of Ivrea on Sunday to mark the annual Battle of the Oranges, a time-honoured fruit-throwing skirmish.
The event, dating back to Medieval times, sees teams dressed up in brightly coloured medieval costumes take part in a fierce orange-throwing fight that leaves the cobbled streets covered in a carpet of orange pulp.
Every year some 500 tonnes of oranges are shipped from Sicily to the Piedmont region to provide weapons to the fruit-flinging warriors.

Thousands of people gather in the Italian town of Ivrea, to pelt each other with oranges, as part of the tradition known as the “Battle of the Oranges.”
Participants dressed in battle costumes divide into teams, either on foot or in carts, and hurl over 220,000 kilograms (500,000 pounds) of oranges at each other.
The origins of the battle are not clear – one theory traces it back to a medieval legend involving the uprising of townspeople against a tyrant, while another purports it is a re-enactment of the civil war between Napoleonic troops and the people of Ivrea.
The food fight, Italy's largest, is part of the annual Carnival of Ivrea.
