The Annual Red Mass of Orange County
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange and the St. Thomas More Society will host the annual Red Mass at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange Monday, October 6, 2014 at 6:00 PM. Orange County judges and lawyers will attend as a group, joined by public officials and law faculty members. The custom originated in Europe in the 13th century and received its distinguished name from the brilliant scarlet vestments worn by the Mass celebrant and Lord High Justices in England.
This year we are honored to welcome Bishop Kevin Vann to his second Red Mass in Orange County and seek his blessing on the dedication and mission of our local legal community as we seek to strengthen our resolve in the upcoming judicial session. We look forward to sharing a meal with Bishop Vann at the St. Thomas More Society dinner after the Red Mass where we will acknowledge exemplary work of some of Orange County's catholic legal professionals.
This unique Mass for the Bench and Bar has been celebrated for many centuries all over the world. Its roots can be traced back to Paris, France where the first recorded Red Mass took place in 1245. It was held for centuries in the chapel of the Order of Advocates, La Sainte Chapelle, built by Louis IX. In certain localities of France, the Red Mass was celebrated in honor of St. Ives, the patron Saint of Lawyers. In England, the tradition began about 1310, during the reign of Edward I. The entire Bench and Bar attended the Red Mass together at the opening of each term of Court.
In keeping with our country's rich tradition of religious freedom and diversity, the Red Mass has continued in the United States. The first Red Mass in the U.S.A. was held at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Detroit in 1877. Each year in Washington, D.C., the members of the United States Supreme Court join the President and members of Congress in celebration of the Red Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew at the opening of the judicial year. The Red Mass is also celebrated in Sacramento and most other state capitals and major cities throughout the United States.
The St. Thomas More Society of Orange County celebrated its first Red Mass in Orange County in 1988 with many jurists and members of the Bar actively participating. The Red Mass has become as much a tradition here as it is throughout the United States and other parts of the world.
The Red Mass in Orange County is an honored tradition that brings the legal community together and reminds us of the lawyer's duty as a servant to his client and to justice and equity in the law, said Bill Malecki, Esq., Chair of the 2014 Diocese of Orange Red Mass Committee.

Iconic Neutra-designed *Orange County Architecture* Enters 21st Century
lpainc.com/ LPA has been working with the Diocese of Orange to bring the Christ Cathedral campus Arboretum into the 21st century without disturbing the architectural significance of its rich history. The Diocese acquired the Arboretum in February 2012. It was the original worship area for the Crystal Cathedral Ministries, and is now serving as the temporary home for the relocated St. Callistus parish.
Originally designed to be cutting-edge in 1961, the 22,000-square-foot building needed aesthetic and technological updates. The Arboretum is part of the 34-acre campus of the future Christ Cathedral, located in the heart of Orange County in Garden Grove, Calif. Richard Neutra, one of Southern California's most celebrated architects was hired by Rev. Robert Schuller for the project.
Partnering with the Diocese of Orange and the Christ Catholic Cathedral Corporation, the entity charged with the management of the site, LPA applied sustainable design decisions appropriately to achieve a balance between the needs of the Church and the preservationist's desire for flawless preservation.

Bayeux Cathedral church bells! Bayeux, France
Stayed in Bayeux on our way through our tour of Northern France and the beaches of Normandy. Bayeux Cathedral was consecrated on 14 July 1077 in the presence of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England. It was here that William forced Harold Godwinson to take the oath, the breaking of which led to the Norman conquest of England.

Peter Marshall's France 1 Part 3 Avignon & Orange
Take an early morning look at Nimes, then go by SNCF train to Avignon. On arrival, listen to the tune played by the pedestrian crossing lights and also listen to the instructions about crossing the road - it helps if you understand French! See the city walls, take a brief look at the market. Then take a bus to Villeneurve-les-Avignon without realising (should have checked!) that there was no bus to get back here! See the castle built there by the French king so that he could keep an eye on Avignon, just across the river - Popes lived here when they were not able to live in Rome. Explore the castle ,enjoy the mistral, which is blowing hard and horizontally., and manage to find the way out just before they closed. Luckily a French couple give you a lift back to Avignon. Explore Avignon and have lunch in the foyer of an old cinema. Explore the Pont d'Avignon (naturally!) and then the cathedral. Then take a short train ride on SNCF to Orange and see the Roman theatre and Triumphal Arch.
