Finding WILD Orangutans in Sumatra // VLOG 002
We started our stay in Indonesia with a 3-day-long hike through the jungle near Bukit Lawang, Sumatra. The tour was called “jungle explorer“ and operated by EcoTravel ( We’ve purposely picked this company since they make sure to leave no footprints in the jungle and have a general focus on fairness and sustainability on all levels.
Besides the amazing experience of seeing wild orangutans in their natural habitat and sleeping in a jungle for 2 nights, those 3 days made us realize one thing: We have to do everything we can to protect the jungle and all its beautiful inhabitants!
We personally stopped purchasing any products that contain palm oil and hope to inspire you to do the same after watching this video :)
If you want to find out more details or check out some of the photos we took, you can find our blog post here (it's in English ;)):

INDONESIA: Orangutan Gunung Leuser, Bukit Lawang, Sumatra (HD-video).mp4
With a guide we walked into the jungle of Gunung Leuser national park (near Bukit Lawang, Sumatra) and of course we did like to encounter orangutans.
We were lucky, we saw a mother with her child. Though they were in the wild now, they were not yet afraid of humans and accepted fruit.
During our walk we saw some Thomas Leaf monkeys too.
As more tourists come for a walk, they often meet humans and we could come very close to them.

Bukit Lawang Orang Utan Trekking - Sumatra [Sony A6000 & GoPro Hero 4]
During the second part of our world trip we decided to go back to Indonesia. This time we visited Bukit Lawang on the island Sumatra, hoping we could spot a wild Orangutan in the rainforest. We were lucky and spotted multiple Orang Utans, including some babies, females and a giant male.
We had a great time in Bukit Lawang, with some amazing highlights. We met some great people, had a blast tubing in the river and we will never forget our encounter with the Orang Utan.

Indonesia's orangutans under threat

The destruction of the world's rainforests has been under discussion this week at a summit in the Republic of Congo.
Among the species threatened by deforestation are Indonesia's orangutans. Indonesia's orangutans are among the most well-known victims of deforestation.
However, a plan to release more than 600 of these primates back into the wild has been repeatedly delayed.
Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports.

Oldest Living Orangutan interacts with humans.
Great footage of Rango the male orangutan at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa interacting with humans. Rango weighs in at over 300 pounds! He looks fierce but really he's a marshmallow when it comes to hanging out with his buddies or checking out his newborn daughter.

Filmed in the Bukit Lawang jungle, the orangutan grabs the woman's hand and holds on for close to five minutes. The orangutan seems comfortable with human interaction, indicating it was likely captive before being released into the wild. Most attempts at bribery with fruit are unsuccessful, but eventually the orangutan lets go and the woman is freed.

Breaking News - World's oldest Sumatran orangutan dies
Puan, oldest known Sumatran orangutan, dies in Australia The world's oldest known Sumatran orangutan has died in an Australian zoo aged 62, leaving behind 54 descendants.Puan, described as the grand old lady of Perth Zoo, was euthanised on Monday due to age-related complications. She had been at the zoo since 1968, and was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest of her species in 2016.A critically endangered species, Sumatran orangutans rarely reach age 50 in the wild, the zoo said.Believed to have been born in a jungle in Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1956, Puan left an incredible legacy of 11 children and a total of 54 descendants across the US, Europe and elsewhere, the zoo said. Her genetics count for just under 10% of the global zoological population, primate supervisor Holly Thompson said. She did so much for the colony at Perth Zoo and the survival of her species. Some of Puan's descendants have been released back into the wild in Sumatra, the zoo said. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are only about 14,600 Sumatran orangutans.Puan's chief zookeeper wrote an obituary published in The West Australian newspaper on Tuesday.Over the years Puan's eyelashes had greyed, her movement had slowed down and her mind had started to wander, Martina Hart wrote. But she remained the matriarch, the quiet, dignified lady she had always been.
Puan left an incredible legacy of descendants for the critically endangered species, keepers say.
