Our last day in Lanyu was one of the memorable experience we had with A-Lan and the culture that we learned through their village. Traditional homes and food was very interesting and how it developed over time.

Escape to rustic Orchid Island of Taiwan
Lanyu used to be known as People's Island which is located in a region of the Western Pacific. Its volcanic topography makes it a waypoint bridging tropical and sub-tropical climates. There are over 100 species of plants and nearly 70 endemic species, so the island’s natural resources are quite rich and plentiful.

Travel in Taiwan -- Lanyu (Orchid Island) Scooter Ride / 蘭嶼騎機車
We visited Lanyu recently and rented motor scooters to explore the island. After watching an amazing sunrise from a small road leading up to a weather station in the mountains, I decided to film a bit of scooter riding. From the weather station I went downhill to the village of Yeyin (Ivalini in the local indigenous language) on the eastern coast, then I followed the coast down south, then back up the western coast to the village of Hongtou (Read Head) where our guesthouse was. I would have liked to do the whole round-the-island route, especially because the rocks on the northern side are quite spectacular, but I didn't have enough time. The video is unfortunately very shaky. I didn't use goPro but two regular Canon cameras, first strapped around my neck, then holding one in my hand. Didn't help that the road surface is not that smooth. Hope you get an idea of what it's like to ride a scooter on Lanyu. The island is a fascinating place devoid of tourist crap sites. The scenery is top drawer and whereelse in Taiwan can you see pigs and goats walk freely on the road?

Orchid Island/ Lanyu/ Ponso no tao - is a small volcanic island off the southeastern coast of Taiwan Island (in Taitung/ Taidong County) inhabited mostly by Tao (Yami) people. It's famous for its amazing nature, unique culture and traditions. Great place for to visit when you travelling in Taiwan.
Syaman Macinanao is a local songwriter. In this video he sings together with his wife - Sinan Macinanao - a song called Akokey in the local Yami language. The song was written for their daughter while she was studying in Taiwan, far away from home.

From Taitung Airport, we flew via daily air 德安航空 about a 20 minute ride to 蘭嶼 Lanyu Orchid Island. From the airport we went straight to our homestay Lan-Yu Hostel 嵐羽 ran by A-Lan. Amazing host and he built the room we featured in this video! Such a simple yet industrial style modernizing the room with this paradise.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – As part of the “Year of Bay Tourism” initiative, the Tourism Bureau is offering a much-coveted job – promoting ten selected islands of Taiwan and getting paid NT$5,000 (US$167) a day for a week!
The campaign, titled “Show your island,” seeks to introduce the characteristics of Taiwan’s marine culture to the world through blogs or vlogs by individuals who can discover the unknown beauty and specialties of Taiwan’s outlying islands, according to the Tourism Bureau.
