My 13th Year Riding to the Recumbent Retreat on the Oregon Coast
I look forward to this ride every year. The Recumbent Retreat is one of the highlights of my summer. I take 2 days to do this ride. The 1st night I camp at Big Eddy County Park in the tiny dot of the town called Pittsburg. The next day is 70 miles and, because of my slow sleep, I need to get an early start. There are a few rest stops along the way with bathrooms and places to refill water bottles but there are no services for food for the first 60 miles. The ride crosses the Nehalem River many times as well as goes through meadows, fields, forests and has a fair amount of climbing including up and over the coastal range. It's a lovely ride and this year I had company with another triker, Brandon Riggs. The ride ends at the Ft Stevens State Park campground where the Recumbent Retreat has been held every September for last 20 years.
NEHALEM FALLS, OREGON
The Nehalem River is a river on the Pacific coast of NW Oregon in the United States, approximately 119 miles (192 km) long. It drains part of the Northern Oregon Coast Range NW of Portland, originating on the east side of the mountains and flowing in a loop around the north end of the range and west to the Pacific Ocean.

THE BEST BEACH ON THE OREGON COAST
Where is your favorite place in the world? This remote Oregon beach might just be my all-time favorite place. After a 10 minute hike through the old growth forest, you will emerge onto a pristine stretch of sand forming a small private cove. If you can brave the cold water, paddling out on a surfboard and looking back at the remote landscape is simply magical.
The Oregon coast is one of those places that everyone needs to experience, I will be posting videos weekly showing in detail some of the most amazing destinations in the state of Oregon. Make sure you subscribe to my channel so you can start planning your Oregon excursion!
Let this video be your inspiration to get outside and enjoy the planet.

We stayed at Depoe Bay, Oregon. This video will include Lighthouses, waterfalls, state parks, Thor's well, the Devil's Churn, spouting horns, and the wondrous power of Oregon's coast.

Nehalem Bay Oregon Hwy 101 Geo Cache 08 18 2015
This video is from the Nehalem Bay Oregon viewpoint looking south over Nehalem Bay and of a stone bridge built on the steep hillside for Highway 101. There is also a geocache hidden somewhere in the area. There is risk with the climbing that is done in this video so do not attempt climbing this location on your own if you are not completely confident in your ability to physically and mentally attempt this yourself. Otherwise, the scenery is beautiful.
Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad - Steam in the Pacific North West
Check out the beautiful Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad in Tillamook County Oregon. McCloud River Railroad #25, an amazing 2-6-2 steam locomotive.
And we take a look at Deep River Logging #7, Whitney Company's logging mallet 2-4-4-2 called “Skookum” built by Baldwin in 1909. It was the first of Baldwin’s logging mallets.
From their web site:
The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is a registered non-profit museum organization (501c3). We are an all volunteer organization that operates over the former Southern Pacific and Port of Tillamook Bay Railroads. We operated regularly scheduled trains between Gairbaldi and Rockaway Beach in the summer months and special event trains throughout the year over the rest of the line. Our line extends from the TIllamook Air Museum blimp hangar on the South side of Tillamook through Garibaldi, Rockaway Beach and Wheeler where the tracks turn to the East and head up into the coast range along the remote and breathtaking Nehalem and Salmonberry River canyons.
Founded by Scott and Kim Wickert in 2003 the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad has grown from its humble beginnings dodging freight trains in Garibaldi on weekend runs to Rockaway Beach and Wheeler to the sole operator of 46 miles of the railroad between the Tillamook airport and a point 2 miles east of the railroad siding of Enright in the Oregon Coast Range. The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad offers excursions operating daily in the summer months and special excursions operating year round. Our schedules and special excursion pages have more details for how to catch a ride on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad.
