Portland family wants answers after missing man found dead at Oregon Zoo
World's oldest orangutan turns 60 at Oregon Zoo
The Oregon Zoo's oldest resident, ultra-geriatric Sumatran orangutan Inji, turned 60 this month. She is thought to be the oldest orangutan in the world.
Inji's in amazing shape for her age, said Asaba Mukobi, the zoo's senior primate keeper. She has no major health concerns — she isn't taking any special medication. Her age and remarkable condition say a lot about the quality of care she's received over the years.
Inji's actual date of birth is unknown. She was born in the wild around 1960, came to the United States through the wild animal trade (legal at the time) and was brought to the zoo by her owner in 1961. She was estimated to be around a year old when she arrived at the zoo Jan. 30, 1961 — 59 years ago today.
We're thankful that we've been able to give Inji a good home, but it's heartbreaking to think about the circumstances that brought her here, Mukobi said. Even though the pet trade is illegal now, it still exists. It is considered a major threat to orangutans' survival, along with human encroachment and habitat loss from palm oil plantations. Orangutans are at the brink of extinction — especially in Sumatra, where Inji comes from.
Both the Sumatran and Bornean orangutan species are considered critically endangered, with fewer than 15,ooo Sumatran and 55,000 Bornean orangutans believed to remain.
The name orangutan comes from the Malay orang, meaning man, and hutan, meaning wilderness or jungle. According to Mukobi, many people are struck by the orangutans' close resemblance to humans.
Building on that connection, we're trying to create awareness about what's happening to orangutans in their native lands and let people know how they can help, Mukobi said.
Inji is currently off-view as the zoo completes work on its new Primate Forest area, featuring expanded and improved spaces for chimps and orangutans. Primate Forest is one of eight major projects made possible by the community-supported zoo bond measure passed in 2008. With five of these projects now complete, the final three — new habitats for polar bears and primates, and an improved habitat for rhinos — are being managed as a single construction project.

Samudra the elephant turns 10
Asian elephant Samudra turned 10 years old at the Oregon Zoo today, and it’s safe to say birthday boys don’t come much bigger. The 7,545-pound bull is known for his love of water – his name means “ocean” in Sanskrit – and can often be found swimming in the 160,000-gallon pool at Elephant Lands.
“Samudra is such a happy-go-lucky elephant,” said Shawn Finnell, the zoo’s senior elephant keeper. “He’s always been very social and he loves to play with his sister Lily and the rest of the herd.”
Samudra, born Aug. 23, 2008, was the first third-generation elephant born in the United States.

Committed to conservation, Oregon Zoo is currently working to save endangered California condors, Oregon silverspot and Taylor's checkerspot butterflies, western pond turtles and Oregon spotted frogs. Other projects include studies on Asian elephants, polar bears, orangutans and giant pandas. Celebrating 125 years of community support, the zoo relies in part on donations through the Oregon Zoo Foundation to undertake these and many other animal welfare, education and sustainability programs.
Snow day at the Oregon Zoo
President Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to a shocked Vice President Biden on Thursday at the White House.
Biden and the president had gathered with others for what the White House had described as a final tribute to the vice president.

The event began with a playful and heartfelt tribute from Obama to one of his closest friends and confidants in Washington. As he finished his remarks, the president asked one of his military aides to come to the stage.
“For the final time as president I am pleased to award our nation’s highest civilian honor . . .” Obama began as a Marine officer bearing the medal stood by.

Biden immediately spun around, turning his back to the crowd, and wiped his face and eyes with his handkerchief. The president bestowed the medal “with distinction,” an additional level of veneration that his three immediate predecessors had reserved for only three others — Pope John Paul II, former president Ronald Reagan and Gen. Colin Powell.
“I had no inkling,” Biden said after the medal was draped around his neck. “I thought we were going . . . to toast one another and say what an incredible journey it has been.”
In his remarks, Biden praised Obama for serving the nation with dignity and insisted that he was not worthy of the honor.
“I don’t deserve this,” the vice president said repeatedly.
Obama described Biden as a “lion of American history” and praised his long service in the Senate. As vice president, Biden’s influence has spanned both domestic and international policy initiatives. He was a critical voice in crafting strategy in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and in encouraging Obama to send Navy SEALs on a mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Biden also helped oversee the president’s first-term economic stimulus package and pressed unsuccessfully for gun-control legislation after the killing of 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Oregon Zoo showed how its many different residents enjoyed the first snow of 2017 in Portland, United States. Among the creatures were Nora the polar bear, sea otters, harbour seals and Samudra, the elephant. Officials estimate a foot (8-15 inches; 20-38 cm) of snow for the animals to enjoy in their own unique ways.
