Organ Pipes
Organ Pipes National park is located in Organ Pipes Rd, Keilor North Victoria. It is a place full of stunning landscapes. Most important thing in organ pipes park is non other than the organ pipes.
Here at organ pipes it is believed that the lava filled a river valley running at right angles to Jacksons Creek and was perhaps 70 meters thick. Once a surfce crust had formed, the lava beneath cooled very slowly.
During cooling, the lava contracted and surface cracks developed as they do in a drying mud puddle. As it contuned to harden, the cracks lengthened untill the basalt mass was divided into columns.
Over the million years since the lava flow, Jacksons Creek has cut a deep valley through the basalt and revealed the Organ Pipes.

Organ Pipes National Park (Victoria Australia)
About 1 million years ago basalt lava flowed along a dry river bed, then cooled slowly and under pressure to form the long, hexagonal structures seen in the video. This video is shot in the Organ Pipes National Park, about half an hour from the city of Melbourne in Victoria Australia.

Organ Pipes National Park, Victoria, Australia
Million years ago, the flowing lava from nearby volcanoes gathered at the Keilor Plains, filling depressions and valleys. At the deep valley of Jackson Creek, while the surface crust was formed, the underneath layer was cooling much slower and contracting into basalt columns that we call The Organ Pipes today. The sedimentary rocks downstream were originally under the sea for 400 million years.

Hiking in the Organ Pipes National Park
A volunteer from the Organ Pipes National Park led an off-track environmental excursion in winter and my pictures were mainly from that trip, except a few from a summer visit later. It’s not easy to spot the seasonal difference due to the dry spell. We may hike off-track when cold, but one should keep to the formed path to avoid snakes in summer.
