Pak Ou Caves Scooter Roadtrip, Luang Prabang
Date of travel: July 2018
Budget for 2 people: 140K Kip (Scooter 100k + Gas 20K + 5k for parking+ 2k for toilet use + 13K pp return boat ride)
Level: Experienced or gutsy scooter/motorbike rider
Duration: Half a day if you don't get lost. Full day if you do!
Recommended to hire a scooter from Galaxy (best price in town at the time of hire). There are plenty of gas stations on the way. We used Google maps, taking route 13. We initially intended to do the Chompet Loop as suggested on travelfish.org but unfortunately with ongoing construction everywhere, the roads seemed to have changed and we got lost for 2 hours! All good, because by getting lost we happened upon Indigo Farm to Table Restaurant. That was a wonderful organic dining experience - and allowed us to rest up before we tackled the rest of the ride. To get there, go past the Pak Ou Caves turnoff from route 13 for around 5 mins when you should see a few big signs to the restaurant. Afterwards, head back to the turn off sign and follow the road all the way down to the Pak Ou village. Major road construction on the way, so be careful. But the views!! And of course, the elephants! We got the elephants on the way back - perhaps on their regular sunset strolls. The Lao Lao or whiskey village is also on the way. You will know you've reached the village once you're by the limestone mountains and you see a ticket counter set-up. Bring your ticket with you when you walk down to the boat to give to the boat driver. There are restaurants and little shops and user pay toilets at the village. On the way back, worth to stop for a drink at the Chongchangking bar for a 180 degree view of the Mekong.
On a last note: I loved this experience and highly recommend it if you like independent travel. But for my partner, he recommends to go the 3 hrs, 300K cruise to the Caves. Boring...

Strawberry farm a sweet stopover when visiting Luang Prabang
The town of Luang Prabang in northern Laos is well known as one of the world's top travel destinations with its well-preserved culture, historic sites and numerous temples, but if you are looking for a nice getaway outside of Luang Prabang for the weekend, Phoukhoun Strawberry Farm would be a great choice.
The farm is situated on a hill in Samyak Phoukhoun village, Phoukhoun district, Luang Prabang province, about 2-3 hours drive from Luang Prabang close to the junction that links the roads to Xieng Khuang and Vientiane.
Mr Anouphone said he and his father set up the strawberry farm almost two years ago. They offer visitors an overnight stay at the farm as well as camping so that people can experience the cool weather up on the hill.
It's also a great place to observe the stars in the clear night sky and to watch the sea of fog in the morning as well as drink in the breathtaking views of the Phouphachao landscape and, of course, pick juicy ripe strawberries.
At our farm we don't offer food; we encourage people to bring their own or buy it at the market here so they support the local people and then cook here in true camping style, Anouphone said.
Tents are available in two sizes costing 50,000 and 100,000 kip depending on size. If y ou bring your own tent you need pay only 30,000 kip for cleaning and toilet services. You can stay there for free if you're prepared to help out with some work!
Anouphone graduated in chemistry, banking and engineering. He tried office work for a year but yearned to spend time outdoors. The idea of setting up a strawberry farm at Phoukhoun came to him when he visited the area on a motorbike trip a few years ago and discovered this amazing location. Then he came up with the idea of arranging farm-stays and sharing this awesome place with other people.
Not knowing how to grow straw berries, he did some research, watched online video tutorials and went to Chiang Mai in Thailand to learn about the actual planting process on a strawberry farm there.
Then he imported some strawberry seedlings and began planted them out on his two-hectare plot of land. About two months after planting the fruit can be harvested over a period of up to six months, depending on the weather conditions.
Anouphone sells most of his strawberries via home deliveries in Vientiane. Only 30 percent of the crop is sold at the farm, which visitors pick and buy themselves.
Last year more than 5,000 people stayed at the farm, most of whom were locals, while more than 7,000 people dropped in for a short visit.
In the near future Anouphone plans to expand the camping area and provide more facilities to make the experience more convenient and comfortable. He will also offer more activities that allow visitors to interact and experience the local life in this small community.
He may also expand the farm so that he can provide a wider range of products instead of just fresh fruit. These might include strawberry jam, juice and dried strawberries.
Phoukhoun Strawberry Farm is truly a wonderful place for an overnight stop to recharge during a road trip northwards from Vangvieng and offers a complete contrast to the bustling streets of Luang Prabang. Plan to go there soon and discover a different side of Laos!

EXPLORING Spectacular LAOS: Celebration and tribute for visiting the 100th country ????????
SUBSCRIBE: - LAOS: It has taken me a few years but finally I have accomplished what I had always dreamed of, that is, to visit 100 countries. Here's a review and summary of my videos from the spectacular country of Laos, celebrating this great achievement, the 100th country I had the great pleasure of visiting recently.
Laos is a Southeast Asian country traversed by the Mekong River and known for mountainous terrain, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements and Buddhist monasteries. Vientiane, the capital, is the site of the That Luang monument, where a reliquary reportedly houses the Buddha’s breastbone, plus the Patuxai war memorial and Talat Sao (Morning Market), a complex jammed with food, clothes and craft stalls.

Making Mud Bricks
Alex, Sue and local APHEDA staff spent the day running a workshop on building 'cob' ovens from mudbricks from scratch. Trainers from APHEDAs partner organisations were learning the skills to then take back to their communities. The ovens are designed to reduce the amount of pollution produced by conventional fire cooking. The oven design uses only materials and resources that communities would already have, or could access easily.
