Maropeng is the official Visitor Centre of the Cradle of Humankind, one of South Africa’s eight World Heritage Sites and one of the major tourist attractions in South Africa. It's the world's richest hominin site, home to around 40% of the world's human ancestor fossils. The Cradle of Humankind region in South Africa, which is approximately 90 minutes' drive from the Johannesburg city centre.
The exhibition centre takes visitors on a journey of discovery to learn more about the origins of humankind, and is housed in the Tumulus, a unique architectural structure resembling an ancient burial mound. An underground boat ride starts the adventure, taking visitors through the various stages of Earth’s creation. Visitor’s then emerge into the main exhibition halls, where the evolution of humankind is illustrated through fun and interactive displays and games.
More than just an exploration of human origins, the Maropeng exhibition also inspires visitors to be more aware of threats to the environment. The sustainability wall, which runs across the main exhibition room, highlights important facts about modern humans and our consumption of rapidly decreasing natural resources. Maropeng provides visitors with a rare opportunity to view original hominid and dinosaur fossils, as well as ancient artifacts housed in the fossil display room. The collections on display change throughout the year, ensuring there is always something new to see at Maropeng. The area is also home to a diversity of birds, animals and plants, some of which are rare or endangered.

CARTA:The Origin of Us -- Lyn Wadley: South African Archaeological Evidence
(Visit: Lyn Wadley (Univ of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) contends that the manufacture of compound adhesives and compound paints by 100,000 years ago in South Africa is clear evidence for modern thought processes that involve, for example, multi-tasking. Some early hunting technologies support this conclusion. Cultural traditions, reminiscent of hunter-gatherer ones practiced in historic times, are also evident in South Africa’s Middle Stone Age, by not less than 100,000 years ago. The music may seem a bit disconnected from the harsh realities that many non-white South Africans faced on Constitution Hill and the painful memories it represents for many, but it has a symbolic value. On our tour everyone happened to be Black and there coincidentally were only women in the group as well –– the music used in this video is meant to mirror the image of our tour in which we move through history from the old fort origins, to the Apartheid prison system, and eventually reach the more recent past in the building of Constitution Hill and the Constitutional Court in which numerous constitutional cases have passed through since the South African Constitution came into place in 1996. Furthermore, the fact that people who walked the tour today day could have easily found themselves in the women’s prison on Constitution Hill are today able to walk and see it only as a representation of a past history shows the progress the nation has made in rebuilding itself. The music being played throughout the video is taken from the “Listen Up! Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album” in which South Africa showcased the growth they had made worldwide since the dark days of apartheid. The music choices are meant to remind us that despite the segregated past there is a united hope for the future in South Africa.
