Casablanca And The Historic Orinda Theatre
The Orinda Theatre, a lavish collaboration of industrialist Donald Rheem, San Francisco architect Alexander Aimwell Cantin, and renowned Beverly Hills decorator Anthony Heinsbergen Sr., was almost demolished in the 1980s. After an eight year long battle, it was saved by a group of Orinda residents who called themselves The Friends Of The Orinda Theatre. The rescued Orinda Theatre underwent extensive restoration and earthquake retrofits. On Thursday, June 29th, 1989, at 9:00 PM, Orinda Mayor, Bobbie Landers lit the landmark historic marquee for the first time in eight years. It can be seen in the film at the end of this video. I shot this sequence with a hand held 35mm Bell & Howell Eyemo camera (previously owned by Hollywood actor, Jon Hall), on film donated by Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic. I rushed it to San Francisco for developing (donated by Monaco Film Laboratory), and showed it the following night before Casablanca.
On Friday night, June 30th, 1989, 798 people attended the Orinda Theatre Grand Opening. The line wrapped around the block. As I entered the theatre with the Casablanca print, I held it above my head and waved it back and forth. A cheer went up from the beginning of the line and worked it's way to the end. Sometime between 7:00 and 8:00 PM (we had to delay the show due to the huge turnout), I hit the giant Orinda screen with Mayor Landers lighting the grand marquee, followed immediately by Casablanca. The audience applauded enthustically. Some people stood up. I've opened many theatres, but this was the best opening I've ever experienced. Vince Townsend was the opening manager (seen in the film at the poster case), Kendrick Jones and his sister, Terryl Jones, were the opening assistant managers. I was the opening night projectionist and later became manager.
A few months later, The San Francisco Bay Area was hit by the largest earthquake since the historic 1906 quake (much historic film of the 1906 devastation was shot by the Monaco [film laboratory] family). The newly restored Orinda Theatre survived, thanks to the earthquake retrofits. Not even one neon tube was broken! At sunset, we lit the marquee to let everyone know that we were still there. Although sections of San Francisco were shut down for weeks, we stayed open.
Now, 24 years later, Wednesday, January 23rd, Vince and I will be back. Vince managing and me attending to technical operations. Casablanca will be 70 years old and the Orinda Theatre will be 72 years old, originally opened December 27th, 1941, by legendary comedian, Bob Hope.
The Pretty Young Woman At The Beginning Of The Video
The attractive young woman on the diary first saw Casablanca on her 19th birthday, Sunday, February 21st, 1943 with her best (and lifelong) friend, Rosemary [Brown] Deese. (That was less than a month after Casablanca opened nationwide). A few years later, her future husband, Robert Edward Franseen, proposed to her across the street from the Orinda Theatre at the Casa Orinda Restaurant (still there). That woman, Bambi Glascock Franseen, is my mother.

Orinda
Nestled in the rolling hills of the East Bay and part of the integrated communities known locally as LaMorinda (Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda), the quiet community of Orinda is the perfect alternative to the nearby bustling cities of Oakland and San Francisco. While the city is located near these urban areas, it has maintained a very intimate, small-town charm and boasts low crime rates and an ideal climate. The relaxed atmosphere provided by the rural landscapes, as well as the cultural benefits offered by the town's proximity to these cities, makes the area a haven for affluent professionals. Dotted with multi-million dollar custom homes throughout its picturesque hills, the city is regarded as one of the most desirable addresses in the East Bay. At the heart of town is Theater Square, home to numerous shops and restaurants, as well as the historic Orinda Theater which hosts the annual Orinda Film Festival. Between its natural beauty, outstanding location and magnificent residences, Orinda is quite a city.

Welcome to Danville
Danville California – The Heart of The San Ramon Valley
Most people would agree that Danville California is the most appealing community in the East Bay. It’s historic downtown draws people from throughout the area and the shops, restaurants, art galleries and more combine to create an ambiance that is unique in the San Ramon Valley. There are dining options at all levels from fast food to upscale restaurants like the Peasant and the Pear and Incontro. Its character and convenient location make it the perfect place to work, live, and play.
If you are thinking of buying a home in Danville, you will find a wide variety of home styles at all price points from 1 bedroom condominiums to large country estates. To put Danville real estate prices into perspective, homes here are more affordable than those in Diablo or Alamo, but generally more expensive than similar properties in Walnut Creek or the communities at the North and South ends of the San Ramon Valley.
Single family detached homes start around $750,000 but you can easily spend $3 million dollars or more.
The older residential part of Danville is on the West side, close to the picturesque downtown. Here can be found some of the most expensive single family homes for sale in Danville, many of them having been improved and remodeled to an exceptionally high standard. This area is highly sought after.
Moving to the East along Sycamore Valley Road, the homes were built more recently. The further East, the more recent the home construction. Toll Brothers Alamo Creek is a prime example.
You can click on the link below this video to check out all of the homes for sale in Danville as well as recent sales on my East Bay Homes and Lifestyle website.
Danville was incorporated in 1982 and covers around 18 square miles with a population of approximately 45,000.
Significant redevelopment has taken place in recent times with the establishment of numerous new restaurants and other businesses yet despite all this, Danville manages to maintain its small-town atmosphere and its outstanding quality of life.
Residents are never short of something interesting to occupy their time. There are natural creeks, hiking and biking trails, and plenty of dedicated open space. Arts and culture are well supported at the Village Theatre and Art Gallery, The Museum of the San Ramon Valley and the Tao House—home to Nobel Prize winning playwright Eugene O'Neill.
Danville also has a strong sense of community. There are numerous events throughout the year including a weekly Farmer's Market, street fairs, concerts in the park and holiday celebrations. All this, combined with the top rated schools and variety of housing at all levels add to the town's appeal.
So over to you

Entourage Spa
Located in the Theater Square in Orinda, Ca, Entourage is one of the first Day/Night Spas which we thought was pretty cool. What's even cooler is after we were done filming we sat at the bar and had a few drinks along with a delicious chicken wrap. It's not just a place to get a facial and a massage, they do it all. Fourteen hair dressers, pedicures, products for sale and a friendly staff, plus cocktails. Gino Chiodo(owner) says after years of experience he put all his ideas together and out came Entourage. We spent hours inside and didn't feel like leaving, they must have been some great ideas.
Tony Rossman on City of Berkeley vs USPS (Part 1)
Tony Rossman, pro bon lawyer fighting to save the Berkeley Post Office, speaks at the Save the BPO Community Meeting 2/19/15 at the Berkeley Arts Festival Center
Tony Rossmann has served in the past 35 years as counsel in some of California’s and the West’s leading land-use proceedings, including those involving historic resources. For 27 years he has represented South Pasadena and the National Trust in successfully resisting the 710 freeway extension in Southern California, that would have produced more harm to historic resources than any other project then pending in the nation. Nearly half a century after its initial state approval, California officially abandoned this project in 2013. He also successfully represented the Friends of the Orinda Theater, winning the appellate decision that led to the theater’s preservation and incorporation into the town’s downtown development.
Mr. Rossmann, an honors graduate of Harvard College (1963) and Harvard Law School (1971) and former editor of the Harvard Law Review, has taught water resources and land use law for more than 30 years, since 1991 at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall.
Mr. Rossmann is a Berkeley resident, his law offices are in an historic downtown Berkeley building, and his children are students at Berkeley High School.
Mr. Rossmann is representing the City of Berkeley pro bono against the U.S. Postal Service.
