Orléans is a city on the banks of the Loire River in north-central France, and it’s the capital of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Joan of Arc famously saved the city from English siege in 1429, an event celebrated with an annual festival. A re-creation of the house where she stayed during the battle, the Maison de Janne d’Arc, features multimedia exhibits on her life.
Orleans is a city in north-central France, about 111 kilometres (69 mi) southwest of Paris. Orleans is the capital of the Loiret department and of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Orléans is located on the Loire River where the river curves south towards the Massif Central. New Orleans (French: La Nouvelle-Orléans), in Louisiana, United States, is named after the city.
TAO manages buses and tram lines in Orléans. Orléans is an autoroute intersection : the A10 (linking Paris to Bordeaux) links to the commune outskirts, and A71 (whose bridge over the Loire is outside the commune limits) begins here, heading for the Mediterranean via Clermont-Ferrand (where it becomes the A75). Orléans is served by two main railway stations: the central Gare d'Orléans and the Gare des Aubrais-Orléans, in the northern suburbs. Most long-distance trains call only at the Les Aubrais-Orléans station, which offers connections to Paris, Lille, Tours, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nevers, and several regional destinations.

Orleans, the capital of the department of the Loiret and the Centre region of France (no not Tours) is a city that has struggled to return to former glories after being devastated during World War II. History has not been kind to Orleans what with the Romans, Attila the Hun and the English all doing their best to wipe it out even before then. A few historic buildings have survived and they, along with the obvious Joan of Arc connection keep it on the Loire Valley tourist map.
Welcoming more visitors than any other attraction in the department, the Parc Floral de la Source is a semi-wild park next to the university, where Orléans meets the countryside. If you visit the tourist office they'll provide you with an itinerary to enable you to visit the main sites of interest in the city and appreciate the Romanesque churches, the many examples of renaissance architecture, the half timbered houses and the various museums throughout the city.
The three main places of interest have to be the impressive cathedral 'Ste-Croix', Hotel Groslot (former Hotel de Ville) and the re-creation of Joan of Arc's house on Place General-de-Gaulle. The kids might enjoy this more than adults so be sure to give a little insight into her history as an introduction.
Don't miss taking the kids, especially the younger ones, to Parc Floral de la Source a 32 hectare site which has everything from a butterfly kingdom ,kid's play area, puppet shows and glorious garden displays. It can be found south of the river in the direction of St-Cyr-en-Val. There is an entrance fee for adults - kids under 6 free. From the end of April to the first week in May, the anniversary of the liberation of Orleans by Joan of Arc is celebrated by a series of events including :medieval festival and market, concerts, exhibitions, sound and light displays plus various processions commencing with 'Joan' entering the city through the 'Port de Bourgogne'.
The high points of these festivities are during the first couple of days with the ceremony of the standard handed from the mayor to the bishop, the commemorative parades, concerts in the town and a firework display on the facade of the cathedral. Alot to see in Orleans such as :

« Historique Loire navigable »

The Holy Cross Cathedral is a cathedral Roman Catholic type gothic located in Orleans in the department of Loiret and the region Center-Val de Loire . It is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Orleans . The cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Cross. The Sainte-Croix cathedral of Orleans is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by the list of 1862
The first church was built around 330 in the northeast corner of the fortified city then called Aurelianum . It owes its name to Saint Euverte , its founder. Indeed, it was at this time that the Cross of Christ was discovered in Jerusalem by St. Helena , mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I st . A piece of this True Cross was preserved as a relic in the cathedral. Saint Aignan , Bishop successor of Saint Euverte, finishes the building and it is the architect Melius who raises the apse and the choir towards 450 .
There is an indirect link between the present cathedral and Joan of Arc . The historical national heroine came to follow the evening Mass onMay 2, 1429during the siege of Orléans (it should be remembered that the building as it is today did not exist in 1429, with the exception of the chapels of the apse, which surround the choir at the back) . We can also report that the rue Jeanne d'Arc opened the xix th century arrived before the main facade (at the time we wanted above all release the sanctuary of the small streets and medieval buildings that the hemmed, the denomination came after).
Every year, on the evening of May 7th, during the Johannic Festivities , the ceremonial ceremony of the Remise de l'Etendard takes place on the forecourt (which evokes that of Joan of Arc). The municipality is guardian and transmits it to the Catholic religious authorities for the duration of the festivities. The facade of the cathedral then serves as a support for sound and light.
