Feist vs. Sargent, MSSCT/Orleans Final 2/7/09
Brian Feist faces Chris Sargent in the final match of the Massachusetts South Shore Candlepin Tour stop at Orleans Bowling Center, 2/7/09.
Orlean's Bowling Center
From their website...
David Currier had a dream. The Cape Cod native “born and raised on the ‘east side’” of Orleans, has talked about owning a restaurant for a long time. “When I was 10 years old I joked about opening a place called Big Bub’s Hung-over Pub with my uncle! My family has owned this building (the Orleans Bowling Center) since the ‘70s and had shares in it long before that. I grew up in a candlepin family,” he laughs. “Bowling was cool back then. People have made memories here over the years in the Orleans Bowling Center. All across the country candle-pin alleys are closing, and here we are bringing it back! After three and a half years negotiating with the town, we finally opened. Since March 2014, people are making new memories here over fried green tomatoes (with a creamy maple chipotle sauce) and racks of ribs, while bowling a frame or two with a pitcher of beer. “We traveled around and tried BBQ everywhere we went,” said Currier’s partner Brook Carlson. “We wanted to be different. Pizza, tapas and such are everywhere. Everything on our menu is made in-house, the three different BBQ sauces, the dry rubs and more. All the meats are slow-cooked; the ribs for six hours, the briskets for 12 hours, and thepork butt for 16 hours!”

KONE Escalators (*1-2) @ Rental Car Center, Louis Armstrong New Orleans Int'l Airport, Kenner, LA
(Filmed on 3/23/19). After filming the elevators, here, I decided to then film the escalators just for the heck of it. Just like the elevators, the escalators are KONE. Now I would've rode up and down the escalators that serve floors 2 & 3, but the down escalator in that bank was broken.
Better to ride back down to the 1st floor than include a ride on the elevator down to the 2nd floor and the escalator back down to the 1st in the same video. At least the escalators in the other bank are the same as the ones in this bank. Sure hope they fix that one escalator at some point.
Hampshire Mall - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Hampshire Mall from January 23, 2019. This is a bittersweet tragic story where by The Pyramid Company finds itself with a dead mall on their hands, so they do what they think they need to do to stay current, they rip out any interesting architectural features and put in a lot of entertainment venues like bowling alleys, laser tag, go carts, etc. The food court was transformed into a sort of New Orleans type town center motif and while some might find this charming, I personally think it looked way better before.
Check out our ongoing series of dead and dying shopping malls!
Songs used in this video (in order):
Syd Dale - Won't You Join The Dance
Syd Dale - Doodle
John A. Coleman - Endeavour Suite
Steve Gray - Wonder Groove
Please do check out this excellent writeup from the Caldor Rainbor blog, it was done pre-renovations and has some excellent pictures of what the mall used to look like:
For brevity, here is the wikipedia article:
Hampshire Mall is a primarily one-story shopping mall with a small second floor in Hadley, Massachusetts, United States, with approximately 55 stores owned by The Pyramid Companies. Current anchor stores include Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, PetSmart and Target. The mall is home to Interskate 91 North, a roller skating rink on the second floor. Attached to the skating rink is LaserBlast: Ancient Adventure (a Lasertag facility that was formerly home to LaserStorm).
When the mall opened in 1978 it was anchored by JCPenney, Steiger's and Kmart.
The Steiger's store was demolished in 1994 for Media Play. The Media Play store opened August 10, 1995. Kmart closed in 2002 because of the chain's bankruptcy. In 2003 the former Kmart space was rebuilt and extended to house a Target store. Originally the mall contained a six screen movie theater that existed from 1978 to 1999. This was then expanded to a 12-screen Cinemark movie theater in 2000.
A 45,000 sq ft Dick's Sporting Goods store opened in early 2005, replacing a former Eastern Mountain Sports. Best Buy and Steve & Barry's replaced Media Play in early 2005. Steve & Barry's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008 and subsequently closed their Hampshire Mall store in August 2008 and it replaced by the racetrack.
Walmart developers beginning in 2005 wished to build a new 212,000-square-foot Supercenter southeast of Hampshire Mall. However, there have been various hindrances as a consequence of a bylaw designed to keep out large stores by restricting new stores to 75,000 square feet. After two years of negotiations, on November 20, 2007, a subdivision plan that exempted the planned Walmart Supercenter from the current bylaw restrictions was approved. Developers have eight years to get a site plan approved before the exemption expires. This would almost certainly mean the current store, attached to the east end of Mountain Farms Mall, would close.
In February 2009 Buffalo Wild Wings opened a store between Target and Best Buy. The restaurant got into a dispute with the mall because of an alleged faulty roof that led to a buildup of condensation on the premises. The Pyramid Corporation did not agree to carry out repairs and as a consequence some amount of the rent was withheld. Whether the restaurant never paid any rent or did pay some rent is disputed. The case is currently in litigation. On July 29, 2010 they announced that they lost their lease as of August 1, 2010. The space is now closed. Platterpus Records closed down its store in March 2010. In June 2010 the store reopened in Easthampton, Massachusetts. In August 2015, it was announced that Best Buy would close their doors on October 31 and in 2016, Spirit Halloween opened in the former Best Buy space for 2 months.PetSmart opened in the former Best Buy space in April 2017.

How to Boil Crawfish | Louisiana Recipe | BBQGuys.com
Learn how we boil crawfish down here in Louisiana! In this video, I show you my favorite way to boil a sack of spicy crawfish.
Printable Recipe:
How to Boil Crawfish Recipe:
sack of crawfish 36Lbs.
Sides:
mushrooms 2 packs
red potatoes 1 sack
local sausage (garlic) 1 pack
elephant garlic 2 heads
Seasoning:
sea salt ¼ cup
liquid crab boil 16 oz.
dry crab boil 4.5 lbs.
The Soak:
large lemons 8
Ice 1 bag
Procedure:
- Place crawfish in an ice chest, fill with water to rinse crawfish of any remaining mud and debris.
- Drain water from ice chest, place a little ice on top of crawfish & keep the ice chest in the shade to keep them alive until ready to boil.
- Fill a 120 quart pot about ¾ of the way full with water, enough to cover the amount of crawfish you are boiling.
- Turn on burner, allow water to begin making it’s way to boiling temperatures.
- Mix in salt, dry crab boil and liquid crab boil.
- Place lid on pot, allow water to come up to rolling boil.
In strainer basket, add corn, potatoes, mushrooms, sausage & garlic.
- Once water is boiling, lower basket of sides into the pot.
- Boil sides for about 20 minutes, until potatoes are tender.
- Test tenderness of potatoes with butter knife, when potato falls off, they are ready.
- Remove basket from pot, set on the ground.
- Pour in crawfish to the strainer basket.
- Submerge basket with crawfish and sides into boiling water.
- Let water come back up to rolling boil.
- Once boiling, allow crawfish to cook about 6 minutes, until they float to the top of the water.
- Turn off burner, keep crawfish in the pot for the soaking process.
- Slice lemons in half, squeeze juice directly into the pot & throw in rind.
- Stir in bag of ice into the pot.
- Allow crawfish to soak in the pot for 20 minutes to absorb remaining spices.
- Lift strainer above the water, prop paddle underneath to allow excess water to drain before serving.
- Pour crawfish on table, crack a beer & enjoy!

Roll Out the Barrel! Beer Barrel #Polka by Beetbox Band. 2014 (Rosamunde / Škoda lásky)
Roll Out the Barrel /Beer Barrel Polka. By #Polka Dan's Beetbox Band on Cape Cod, MA (USA). 2014 (proper attribution as required by license)
Please connect with the Beetbox Band:
Beer Barrel is the most popular polka song by far, but did you know that it once saved the music industry?
Jaromir Vejvoda first wrote the tune we know as Beer Barrel as a pop tune for his dad's brass-band near Prague in 1927. It was published with Czech lyrics as Skoda Laska, Unrequited Love, and then spread through Europe under different translations.
Next, accordion-band leader Will Glahe laid down an instrumental version, with his accordion, lead sax, and a slide-guitar solo, which led a successful German-invasion of the North American pop-charts, selling around a million records and another million copies of sheet-music in the next five years.
The up and coming Andrews Sisters covered the song as' Roll out the Barrel, lacking accordion, but with sisters' group harmonies (swiped from New Orleans' innovative Boswell Sisters) and it was a hit across North America in 1939 during the Depression.
People had stopped buying records for wartime saving after the depression, and you could hear music for free on the radio. But everyone had to hear that song! They pumped their nickels and dimes into the new high-tech jukeboxes across the world, and Roll out the Barrel recharged the music industry.
It has been covered hundreds of times since, but never quite the way it is done by Polka Dan's BEETBOX BAND, in a bowling alley with a giant bowling ball chasing pins around town.
When the Beetbox Band recorded the song with Jon Evans at Brick Hill Studio on Cape Cod, MA, they didn't know that their odd choice of instruments was actually the same used on the original 1927 version: accordion (Greg Johnson), sax (Clayton March), and guitar (played by Jon Evans), along with the usual bass (also by Greg), piano (Robin Smith-Johnson), drums (David Silver), and Polka Dan fiddling and hollering.
The song is one of 13 tracks on the new album Just Because, Dummy!

Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*
Read more on The Atlantic:
*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.
