Orlova Chuka Cave - Rusenski Lom Preserve Area
Orlova Chuka Cave - Rusenski Lom Reserve Area
The cave Orlova Chuka Bulgaria
The Orlova Chuka (Орлова чука) cave is situated at a distance of about 40 km from Ruse Bulgaria, near the village of Pepelina. With a total length of 13.437m Orlova Chuka is the second longest cave in the country after Duhlata. The cave was found in 1941.
Speleologists started examining the cave and found skeletons of cave bears. It is believed that it was inhabited by people during the Paleolithic Age and the Stone-Copper Age.
Nowadays, about 3 km of the cave are accessible and illuminated for the visitors.
The Orlova Chuka is the habitat of the bat species Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Rhinolophus Hipposideros and Myotis blythii. In the galleries lives the bat species Chiroptera which is unique for Europe.
The examination of the cave continues to the present day.
From the artificial entrance of Orlova Chuka one can enter the first cave hall. It is called Concert Hall because of its good acoustics, and often concerts are performed inside it. Every year in August during the Cave Celebration bands are performing a festal concert. Namely, the Great Stalactite which is 3.5 meters high and 50 cm in diameter is located in the Concert Hall.
There are many other interesting formations in the cave – the Dinosaur, the Owl, the Turtle, etc.
In the Large Gallery, which is situated to the west of the Concert Hall, there are multiple beautifully shaped sinter lakes.
The largest and the best laid out hall is the cave called The Big Screes. There are sinter formations on the walls, and when you look at them carefully, you can differentiate interesting forms imitating a snake, a football player with a ball, etc. On the bottom of the hall there are stone blocks which had probably been demolished during intensive earthquakes. On the bottom there are a lot of remains of bat compost, because the hall is one of their favorite habitats in the cave.
The hall called The Small Screes is situated next to the Big Screes. To the west of the main gallery begins a tunnel, at the end of which is situated the Cosmic Hall.
A tunnel is formed by the small hall called “Rest”, in the end of which there are calcite crystals, which look like cracks.
People enter the cave in groups (not more than 15 people) at every round hour. Taking pictures in the cave is allowed, but lighting of fire, disturbing the animals which inhabit the cave, as well as visiting the raw galleries of the cave is forbidden. It is also forbidden to visit the cave within the period of 1 November – 1 April; and during the rest of the year the tourist visiting is only allowed within the time between 9 am and 5 pm. People enter the cave only accompanied by a tour guide.

Ecomuseum & Aquarium in Ruse Bulgaria | Русе България | Part 1
Eco Museum with Aquarium in Ruse Bulgaria
The Ecomuseum presents the diversity of animal species and the protected areas along the Danube river and all living organisms on the territory of Bulgaria. The museum is accommodated within four floors, where a rich collection of fossils can be found, as well as dioramas that present different animal species within real environment. This is also the site with the largest freshwater aquarium in Bulgaria with fish from Danube and its tributaries.
Special attention within the exhibition is paid to the Prehistoric animals. There is a model of a Wolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) in real-life size. The lower jaw of Mammuthus rumanus – the only one that is preserved from this kind of mammoth in the world, is also exhibited here.
Theme of the cave Orlova Chuka and Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are also presented in the eco-museum.

Basarbovo Rock Monastery, Bulgaria - Басарбовски Манастир
The Basarbovo Monastery is located in the village of Basarbovo, Ruse region, Bulgaria. The monastery was build around 12-13th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire, along with other monasteries in the rocks along the Rousse Lom River and its tributaries Beli and Cherni Lom. The rocks are limestone and there are numerous fossils of sea shells and rapans. Extremely crumbly, they were carved by the Hesychast monks who turned them into shelters and prayers, and into churches far from public vanity.
The monastery became famous in the 17th century after the death of St. Dimitar Basarbovski, to whom Paisii Hilendarski speaks in his Slavonic-Bulgarian History. Lifetime St. Dimitar Basarbovski was a pastor and lived modestly and ascetically in the rocks of today's monastery. He dies silently and unnoticed by no one in 1685.
The legend tells that a few years later the saint appeared in the dream of a blind girl who lived in the village and told her where his body was, located in the river. When the saints' relics were discovered, they were incorruptible and fragrant. The blind girl started seeing again, and the glory of the saint sprang into the neighborhood.
Later the ruler of Wallachia wished the saint's relics to be sent to Bucharest. Following the consent of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. They loaded the reins on a cart, but the wagon came to some extent and did not want to move. They changed the horses, but that did not help. So the body of the saint was returned to his birthplace.
In 1774, during one of the Russo-Turkish wars, after a victory for Russia, General Poetre Salticov heard of St. Dimitar Basarbovski and wished to bow to his relics. Again, it was agreed that the body of the saint be carried, this time in Russia. The road passed through Romania, where the plague epidemic was at that time. They say that when the saint's relics entered Bucharest, people stopped dying from the plague. The inhabitants of the city asked the general to leave the saint's body. And so far they are in the Patriarchal Cathedral St. Constantin and Helen Equals, but many pilgrims also come to Basarbovo. Here is buried also the monk Hrisant who, while living alone, carved his grave into the rocks and ordered to be buried there. Besides the church and the cells in the rocks, you can also visit his grave. In the monastery there are many baptizings of children from Bulgaria. Recently the rock monastery St. Dimitar Basarbovski was restored and now has opened its doors to all visitors. A green path leads believers to the passes through a beautiful green inner yard and ends at a well which was dug by the monk Dimitrii. It is believed that the water which is coming from the well is curative.
For those who like to travel only a few kilometers from here are the Ivanovo Rock Churches, the Orlova Chuka Cave and the Cherven Fortress, and in the valley of the Roussenski Lom River, which has been declared a Natural Park, you can take great pictures!

Entering Sveta Troitsa Church in Ruse/Rousse, Bulgaria
This is the video from when I entered the church. Unfortunately, I started filming only once inside as I didn't know whether it was permitted, and I needed to figure out how to ask for permission in Bulgarian. Emotionally, this was heavy for me: Disbelief that I was there mixed with fatherly pride and memories of those who have gone before me and are/were connected to this church, and to my family, in some way. (For those who don't know what I'm on about, my great-grandparents [my mother's side, her father] were married in this church. I took the my great-grandfather's name, Dragan [pronounced drah-gahn, not drah-gon] for my son's middle name, Hunter Dragan.
