Canada's Only Strawbale Winery
The ecofriendly design consists of two buildings adjoined by a breezeway. Earthy 21 inch thick walls provide superior insulation qualities - ideal for manufacturing constant barrel room temperatures and for keeping us cool in our desert heat. The buildings are beautiful and very unique.
The Orofino vineyard was first planted in 1989 making these vines some of the oldest in the valley. It still has some original blocks including Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling and Muscat. Replacement blocks include some Merlot (1999), Pinot Noir (2002 and 2008), and Petit Verdot (2010). Vines are grown in sandy loam with no rocks found for at least 2 feet. After that it is all river rock and gravel. The bench is prime agricultural land and has a proven track record for growing premium grapes.

Recently named by enRoute Magazine as one of the world's 5 best wine regions you've never heard of, the Similkameen wineries are starting to get some of the attention they deserve. This little patch of vineyards and orchards in the hot, dry and sunny Similkameen Valley is turning out some stunning grape and fruit wines. Set amongst the dramatic backdrop of craggy mountains, it is not surprising that wine lovers are starting to take notice.
The Similkameen Valley is a short drive from anywhere in the Okanagan to a tranquil valley that is yours to discover.

A great spur-of-the-moment camping trip to Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park in BC. We were visited by wildlife, saw some crystal clear water, got swarmed by mosquitos and visited Orofino winery in Cawston on the way back.
