Hiking Rano Kau & the Rapa Nui Village of Orongo | Easter Island, Chile
Our second full day on Easter Island was full of sun, hiking and exploring ancient Rapa Nui (indigenous Polynesians in Easter Island) villages. Firstly, we slightly (massively!) overestimated the hike from Hanga Roa to Rano Kau. But luckily, a German Shepherd puppy we named Gary joined us on the whole trek up! After admiring the cool volcanic crater, we headed over to Orongo village. This is an ancient village which was used to celebrate the crazy bird man festival of the Rapa Nui. After the long walk down, with Gary by our side of course, we explored the seaside Ahus near Hanga Roa and had some amazing South American dinner! We then headed off the next day, on our flight to Santiago.

Orongo, Rapa Nui, Easter Island, Chile
The village of Orongo is located on the narrowest edge of the Rano Kau volcano
The archaeological site of Orongo is located in the southwestern part of the Rano Kau volcano, in a narrow strip between the edge of the crater that surrounds the lagoon and the cliff that descends almost perpendicular to the sea, in front of the Motu Nui, Motu Iti and Motu Kao Kao islets.
The village of Orongo was inhabited seasonally by the chiefs and main characters of the ancient tribes, who hoped to collect the first sacred egg of the manutara bird in the months of spring.
It was a celebration of religious origin, in honor of the creator god Make Make, which reached its climax during the Tangata Manu competition. Those who took part in this ceremony, lived during that time in houses that were specially built for this purpose and that have a special architectural type.

Orongo on Easter Island Home of the Birdman Cult
Orongo was the centre of the Birdman Cult and here you will find almost 1800 petroglyphs and numerous houses.
This is where the famous Birdman competition took place, basically the competition involved the strongest members from each Clan descending down the cliff, swimming a mile to the Motu Nui Island and them wait for the eggs of the Sooty Tern to be laid and bring one back to present it to his Clans leader, the leader would then become the Birdman for the next year and rule over the island for that time.
Orongo is a stone village and ceremonial centre at the southwestern tip of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The first half of the ceremonial village's 53 stone masonry houses were investigated and restored in 1974 by American archaeologist William Mulloy. In 1976 Mulloy assisted by Chilean archaeologists Claudio Cristino and Patricia Vargas completed the restoration of the whole complex which was subsequently investigated by Cristino in 1985 and 1995. ‘Orongo enjoys a dramatic location on the crater lip of Rano Kau at the point where a 250 meter sea cliff converges with the inner wall of the crater of Rano Kau. ‘Orongo now has World Heritage status as part of the Rapa Nui National Park.

Isla de Pascua Videoguía, 6 Volcán Rano Raraku. Easter Island, Chile 2015
The volcano Rano Raraku is the quarry of the Moai.
In it they were carved and then moved from there to all points of the island.
Most are partly buried by the passage of time, but have the body besides the heads can be seen.
We also visited the crater, impressive with a beautiful lake inside.
A must visit in Easter Island.

Tour Easter Island: The Amazing Bird Men of Orongo - Part 1
The cult of the Bird Man is one of the most engrossing stories in Easter Island (Rapa Nui) history and there is still a yearly Bird Man Competition! Until 1861 when missionaries arrived, an annual Bird Man Competition took place at Orongo Ceremonial Center on top of Ranu Kau Volcano. Seven chiefs and their families would arrive and wait until migratory frigate birds arrived at two island off shore and laid their eggs.
Watch the video for the entire and unbelievable story. There isn't enough money in the world to ever coax me to enter that competition...

Easter Island, Rapa Nui, #voyagemakers #мандрикиянинаокеанією Vadym Ivliev, UT6UD,
Easter Island (Spanish: Isla de Pascua) is a Chilean island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Consisting mainly of three extinct volcanoes. One of the world's most isolated inhabited islands
Stone houses. Stone houses at the ceremonial village of Orongo
The entrances to all the houses are very low, and entry requires crawling. Island Motu Nui, with the smaller Motu Iti and Motu Kao Kao. In early times the people of Rapa Nui reportedly sent the dead out to sea in small funerary canoes. Petroglyphs. The large stone statues, or Moai, were carved in the period 1100–1680 AD. A total about 900 monolithic stone statues were carved from compressed volcanic ash or tuff found at a single site on the side of the extinct volcano Rano Raraku. Unforgettable dive spots with not much fish but with beautiful pristine coral and awesome visibility.
Rano Kau on Easter Island
The volcanic caldera of Rano Kau. We stop off at an overlook that looks down into the crater lake, Bill explains that years ago this is where all the women used to go once a year and stay for a week or two to do their laundry. From this viewpoint you could see the full circle of the volcano.
Rano Kau has a crater lake which is one of the island's only three natural bodies of fresh water. Most of the volcano is on the coast and has been eroded back to form high sea cliffs which at one point have started to bite into the crater wall. On its northern side, the volcano slopes down to Mataveri International Airport.
Rano Kau is in the world heritage site of Rapa Nui National Park and gives its name to one of the seven sections of the park. The principal archaeological site on Rano Kau is the ruined ceremonial village of Orongo which is located at the point where the sea cliff and inner crater wall converge. One ahu with several moai was recorded on the cliffs at Rano Kau in the 1880s, but had fallen to the beach by the time of the Routledge expedition in 1914.
As well as basalt, it contains several other igneous rocks including obsidian (for which it was one of the major sources for the island's stoneworkers) and pumice.
The crater is almost a mile across and has its own micro climate. Sheltered from the winds that wet most of the rest of the island, figs and vines flourish at Rano Kau. The inner slope was the site of the last toromiro tree in the wild until the specimen was chopped down for firewood in 1960.

Orongo Village
Easter Island, Chile
Orongo: Aldea Ceremonial; Rapa Nui
