Russia: Putin visits the relics of St. Nicholas in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour to see the relics of Saint Nicholas, in Moscow, on Wednesday, which were brought to Russia from Italy on May 21.

Thousands of believers queued up to see the relics of one of the Russian Orthodox Church's most important figures.
Believers will be able to visit the remains of Saint Nicholas from May 22 till July 12 in Moscow and from July 13 till July 28 in Saint-Petersburg.

Orthodox believers pray for Russian Olympic team as newly built church is sanctified
Russian Orthodox believers attended a mass for the sanctification of a newly built church near the Olympic park in Sochi on Sunday.
The Holy Face of Christ the Saviour Church was opened at the beginning of January, and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, attended the first public service there for Orthodox Christmas.
On Sunday, Nikolay Vasilievich Kirichenko, Metropolitan Isidor of the diocese of Ekaterinodar and Kuban, travelled from the Russian city of Krasnodar to conduct the sanctification ceremony.
Prayers for success, dedicated to the Russian Olympic team, were said.
One local parishioner, Nadezhda Grunwald, said she was praying for the team to get more prizes.
Another woman, Nadezhda Lilikina, lit a candle and said she was praying for security during the games.
In late December last year, two suicide bombers killed 34 people in the southern Russian city of Volgograd.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even my worst enemy, Lilikina added.
The build up to Sochi has been overshadowed by the threat of attacks by Islamist insurgents from the North Caucasus region.
Russia is deploying more than 50-thousand police and soldiers to protect the games, the biggest security operation in Olympic history.
The opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics is on 7 February.

The Island of Valaam. / Остров Валаам.
Valaam is the island in Republic of Karelia of Russia, located in the Northern part of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe - Ladoga, it is the largest island in the Valaam archipelago. On the island there is the village of Valaam, and the monument of Russian architecture - the Valaam monastery, founded before the baptism of Russia, in the year 960, the monk Sergius and Herman, the Greek Holy monks. Transfiguration monastery became the spiritual center of Ladoga lands. It is believed that in ancient times on the island, was located the main temple of Veles (or Volos) and Perun, who were the main deities for the Gentiles living close. The monastic tradition says that the Holy Apostle Andrew, enlightener of the Scythians and the Slavic peoples, moving along the route from the Varangians to the Greeks, blessed of cross the mountain on the island. In the 15th century the monastery was called the Great Lavra or the Northern Athos. Here was the center of world Orthodoxy and writing of books. By the early 16th century in the monastery lived 600 monks. Now in the monastery about two hundred inhabitants. Life revived in All saints, the Baptist, St. Nicholas, Svyatoostrovsky, Sergievsky sketes.
Period 1839-1917 is the heyday of the monastery. In 1989 on December 13, the day of memory of St. Andrew, when the island came six monks, the monastery began the process of revival. And 16 years later, in 2005, was first heard 1000-pound bell Andrew, mounted on the bell tower in the monastery in the framework of the restoration of an ancient belfry. The feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary September 21, 2008 Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the St. Vladimir skete on Valaam island and conducted the first divine Liturgy in the temple. Resurrection skete, located above Big Nikon Bay, on the mountain, was built in the early twentieth century in the place where according to tradition St. The Apostle Andrew erected a stone cross. Valaam island attracts every year thousands of tourists. The reason - the Valaam Islands have a unique nature, pine forests on the cliffs, warm and quiet inland lakes, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam monastery. During its formation, the monks brought the land, seeds and seedlings of plants from different parts of our country. For such a Northern location is not usual to see some trees and grass. The age of some of them is over three hundred years. The work of the Valaam monks are so fundamental that some areas are truly hand-made. Balaam - the natural reserve, a unique monument of Park art. There are more than 480 species of plants. The island was visited repeatedly by emperors Alexander I, Alexander II, and other members of the imperial family and also Tchaikovsky and Mendeleyev.
The present life of the monastery, another indication that faith invariably raises and restores the monastery from the ruins. So it was throughout the history of Valaam barbarous raids of the Swedes in ancient times, the bombing and the uncertain fate of the monastery during World War 2, it complete, it would seem that the devastation in the era of atheism – monastic life always has returned to these shores.

Baranovka: Failed assault on the UOC temple – timeline
On March 10, 2019, in the town of Baranovka, Zhitomir region, extraordinary events occurred.
Despite the fact that the large community of the UOC church long ago unanimously expressed its loyalty to the UOC led by His Beatitude Onufriy, local authorities organized another community in which there are residents of the city but not a single parishioner. These people were provoked to storm and seize the temple.
On Forgiveness Sunday, a deputy from the Radical Party, Oleg Kovalsky, organized a “veche” (popular assembly) on the town square in which he called upon those gathered to take over the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. As a result, the agitated crowd rushed to the temple. Parishioners were beaten, dragged from the porch and thrown out to the other side of the church fence. At that time, about 150 parishioners closed inside the temple after the Sunday Liturgy, many were with their children.
The raiders cut the doors with a grinder but failed to squeeze in. Late in the evening, Metropolitan Nicodemus, the ruling bishop of the Zhitomir eparchy, arrived to support his flock. The doors were welded back. The parish was able to stand up to the assault.

65,000 gather to defend Orthodox faith
65,000 gather in Moscow 'to pray for Church & defend faith'
]Full prayer service at web address below]:
Tens of thousands of Orthodox Christians have joined a service outside Moscow's main church, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, in defense of their faith, sacred objects and the Church itself, following recent numerous attacks on Christian relics.
The Sunday service has gathered around 65 thousand worshippers, according to official police data. It comes in response to what the church says is a series disrespectful acts against Orthodoxy and religious faith over the past few months.
Sacred Orthodox objects attacked this spring were specially brought to the Cathedral for one day.
Among the relics is a 3.5-metre-tall crucifix cut by an attacker in the cathedral of the city of Nevinnomyssk in Russia's south. There are also five of the 30 icons cut with an ax in the town of Veliky Ustyug in March. And the Virgin Mary icon, shot with bullets in the early 1920s, was also brought from the same city.
Worshippers also denounce other cases of vandalism -- in March, the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in the city of Mozyr was desecrated with blasphemous inscriptions and sacrilege against the representationof the cross. In April, offenders poured gasoline and set fire to the entrance door to the Cathedral of Demetrius of Thessalonica in Krasnodar. In the Rostov Region, on the eve of Easter, vandals smeared black paint on the walls of a chapel built in memory of those who died in the wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya, as well as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.
In February, the activists of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot broke into Moscow's main cathedral and sang blasphemous songs at the altar.
Earlier on Sunday, Patriarch Kirill led a liturgy service and then the worshippers went around the Cathedral in a religious procession. Similar services are being held in other Russian regional centers.
On Saturday, Moscow drivers and bikers had their say in support of the Church. They held a rally denouncing the recent attacks on cathedrals, as well as media criticism of the Patriarch.
