Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港 Kansai Kokusai Kūkō, colloquially known as Kankū (関空)) (IATA: KIX, ICAO: RJBB) is an international airport located on an artificial island in the middle of Osaka Bay off the Honshu shore, 38 km (24 mi) southwest of Ōsaka Station,[3] located within three municipalities, including Izumisano (north), Sennan (south), and Tajiri (central),] in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
Kansai opened on 4 September 1994 to relieve overcrowding at Osaka International Airport, which is closer to the city of Osaka and now handles only domestic flights. It consists of two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, is the longest airport terminal in the world with a length of 1.7 km (1.1 mi). The airport serves as an international hub for All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Nippon Cargo Airlines, and also serves as a hub for Peach, the first international low-cost carrier in Japan.
In 2016, 25.2 million passengers used the airport making it the 30th busiest airport in Asia and 3rd busiest in Japan. Freight volume was at 802,162 tonnes total, of which 757,414 t were international (18th in the world), and 44,748 t were domestic. The 4,000 m × 60 m (13,123 ft × 197 ft) second runway was opened on 2 August 2007. As of June 2014, Kansai Airport has become an Asian hub, with 780 weekly flights to Asia and Australasia (including freight 119), 59 weekly flights to Europe and the Middle East (freight 5), and 80 weekly flights to North America.
In the 1960s, when the Kansai region was rapidly losing trade to Tokyo, planners proposed a new airport near Kobe and Osaka. Osaka International Airport, located in the densely populated suburbs of Itami and Toyonaka, was surrounded by buildings; it could not be expanded, and many of its neighbours had filed complaints because of noise pollution problems.
After the protests surrounding New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita International Airport), which was built with expropriated land in a rural part of Chiba Prefecture, planners decided to build the airport offshore. The new airport was part of a number of new developments to revitalize Osaka, which had been losing economic and cultural ground to Tokyo for most of the century.
Initially, the airport was planned to be built near Kobe, but the city of Kobe refused the plan, so the airport was moved to a more southerly location on Osaka Bay. There it could be open 24 hours per day, unlike its predecessor in the city.
An artificial island, 4 km (2.5 mi) long and 2.5 km (1.6 mi) wide, was proposed. Engineers needed to overcome the extremely high risks of earthquakes and typhoons (with storm surges of up to 3 m, 10 ft). The water depth is 18 m on top of 20 m of soft Holocene clay which holds 70% water. A million sand drains were built into the clay to remove water and solidify the clay.

Osaka Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Osaka
Things YOU need to know before you travel to Osaka Japan. Osaka is the third most populated city in Japan with 2.7M in the city and 19 Million in the region. Osaka is often overlooked for Tokyo and Kyoto, but Osaka has its own charm that makes it a wonderful destination for visitors. Osaka is a welcoming, exciting, and place that should really be on your travel radar!
Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly in the center of Japan. Osaka is a great place to base yourself when visiting Japan. In the centre of the Kansai region, landing at it’s international airport will place you within an hours local train journey to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Osaka is worth worth 3-5 days.
2- Food
Osaka is famous in Japan for their food. Its nickname is “the nation’s kitchen”.
Most well known: okonomiyaki, which is a dish made with meat, seafood, and noodles.
Takoyaki, delicious fried octopus balls that are sure to curve your hunger cravings at night.
Kushikatsu. Kushi refers to the bamboo skewers that the food is on and you can find meat, vegetable and even cheese varieties here. Don’t forget to dip your fried goods into the tonkatsu sauce (but strictly NO double dipping)
And of course Ramen!
Osaka is home to 200+ Michelin starred restaurants and Dontoburi is the epicentre of that.
Aside from the delicious food, Osaka is also well known for its high quality Sake, or Japanese rice wine. The sake is made from fresh water that comes from the Osaka mountains
3-Kita (Umeda) North District
One of 2 major districts in Osaka
Newly rebuilt JR Osaka station is the heart
Business and lots of Hotels
Grand Front Osaka is amazing
YenTenjimbashi-suji Shopping Street
This 2.6km covered shopping arcade is the longest in Osaka
Umeda Sky Building is one of the tallest and most impressive buildings in Osaka. It’s more like two buildings connected by a bridge at the top. There’s a great observation deck at the top called the Kuchu Teien (“Garden in the Sky”) Observatory.
HEP 5 Ferris Wheel - 500
4- Minami (Namba) South District
Osaka’s 2nd downtown
Neon lights, crazy signs
Japan's version of Times Square
Shinsaibashi and Namba
Dotombori Arcade runs parallel to the canal on the south side and it’s lined with some of Osaka’s most famous and largest restaurants, which compete for business with huge signs and giant mechanical crabs etc.
Midosuji (shopping street)
Osaka’s “main street,” Midosuji is a broad street All the major international luxury brands have outlets here
Hozenji Yokocho (traditional alley)
Two small blocks east of Midosuji and two small blocks south of the Dotombori Arcade, you’ll find one of the most beautiful streets in all of Osaka and it looks like it was magically transported from somewhere in Kyoto. Entering this street is like slipping 200 years back in time.
Doguyasuji Arcade (kitchen and cooking supply shopping arcade)
About five minutes’ walk southeast of Namba subway station (easily reached on foot from Dotombori
Amerika Mura (trendy district)
Amerika Mura (or “Amemura” to the locals)
5- Otaku Paradise
Den Den Town. Osaka’s answer to Akihabara and not far from Namba station, here you’ll find all the weird and wonderful Japanese toys and manga you’ve heard about on the internet. Watch your step or you could unintentionally fall into adult-only territory. (Or intentionally, if that’s what you’re after.)
Den-Den is the city’s electronics, camera, computer and pop culture shopping neighborhood. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk southwest of Namba Station, in Nippombashi, running roughly between Nippombashi and Ebisucho stations on the Sakaisuji subway line. Many of the shops here have someone on hand who can speak English, so don’t be afraid to ask for help when looking for something.

Arriving in Osaka
みんなさん、日本からこんにちは!(Hello from Japan, everyone!)
Well, we made it to Osaka!
The only footage I got on the (super boring) plane rides was after the 9th hour on our way from Vancouver to Osaka. Breakfast time!
It wasn't bad: the 'breakfast burrito' was actually a soft pita-like bread filled with melty, gooey Brie cheese and some sliced onions. It was pretty good, but super messy! There was also some salted almonds and a Lindt milk chocolate bar. Yum.
[Don't mind Robert - he tried sleeping sooo much on the plane in order to make time go by faster.] The problem was, we were arriving around 3:30pm, so we'd have to go back to bed in six hours! I decided to stay up as much as I could. [I ended up sleeping from 10pm to around 4am, then 7am to 9:30am - not bad for a time adjustment!]
I couldn't record or take pictures of the lonnnnng customs procedures, but overall it did take us about an hour to receive our Residence Cards (aka Gaijin Cards) and go through the tight security.
It was funny, though: when we had to go through the 'customs declaration' at the very end - where they randomly select passengers to screen their luggage - the officer took one look at my two huge suitcases and asked, Are you a foreign exchange student? [in Japanese] I responded Yes and he motioned me through without delay. They must know the enormous amount of random stuff we pack to stay for a long while. Who'd want to go through that?
The Osaka Gakuin University staff met each of us and placed us on different buses to go to our respective residences (host family, dorms, apartments, etc). It cost me about $17 for a 80min ride (not bad).
And yes, I was very, very scared the whole time. My Japanese needed to improve five months ago. Hence the selfie at 2:25 .
Anyways, that's all for now. A lot more to come later!

About Itami City
Itami City is located in the south-east of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
The city is around 10 km from Osaka and is home to Osaka (Itami) International Airport. Itami's neighboring cities are Amagasaki, Nishinomiya, Takarazuka, and Kawanishi (Hyogo Prefecture), and Toyonaka and Ikeda (Osaka Prefecture).
Itami City is known as the birthplace of sake: around the year 1600, the technique for making clear or refined sake was first discovered in Itami's breweries, giving us the drink we know today.
Today, the city is home to the oldest sake brewery building in Japan - the Former Okada Residence and Sake Brewery, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.
Itami is also famous as a sacred site for naginata training. As well as being home to the All Japan Naginata Federation headquarters, one of Japan's three biggest private dojos, Shubukan, is also located in the city. Shubukan Dojo still carries out naginata training today.
