An android and his human 'twin' provide a glimpse of the future
(25 Nov 2016) LEAD IN :
A university professor has been exhibiting his robot 'twin'.
The android is the work of Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, who thinks a new generation of robots will one day become companions for people.
STORY-LINE :
With a silicon face and a computer for a heart, this human-like robot is an approximate identical twin of his creator, Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro from Osaka University in Japan.
Robot and creator are here in Rome to discuss the future of human-robot relations at the Contemporary Art Museum of Rome (MACRO).
The android, called Geminoid, is equipped with artificial intelligence that professor Ishiguro plans to put at the service of humans.
Geminoid proved his creator's point, as he spoke to the audience: So, if I want I can give a talk, instead of himself, but unfortunately today I cannot give a talk because he is coming here, so let me present Professor Ishiguro, he is real, says Geminoid.
In simple terms, Geminoid is a remotely-operated interface that unites robotic engineering with cognitive science.
It is not merely a machine that resembles the human figure. Through Geminoid's programming, Ishiguro says he hopes to grasp the very essence of being human.
If we can develop a very human-like robot, so that means we understand, we deeply understand what human is. This is the reason why I'm interested in this kind of project, explains Ishiguro.
Already, androids are being used as shopkeepers in Japan, or theater actors in France. Their sophistication mimics basic, human social skills, that convey a sense of presence.
Once we accept the robot as a kind of a partner— actually young children and elderly can accept this robot as a kind of a partner, conversational partner, and the robot can be a friend of them — then I think society may accept this robot as a social partner, says Ishiguro.
Ishiguro, who also heads the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, predicts that in the near future, humanity will witness the rise of a robot society, where human rights are also extended to robots.
We cannot define humans as the flesh bodies…when we look at the handicapped people who don't have arms and legs, we don't think they're 80 percent human, 90 percent human….they are 100 percent humans, says Ishiguro. That means, I know, that the flesh body is not a requirement to define humans, he adds.
However, Ishiguro concedes that science is still far from producing machines that are able to mimic humanity's essential trait: emotions.
When we watch the sunset sometimes we cry, but nobody knows the reason, nobody knows how we can develop that quite emotional mind, so that is very difficult, explains Ishiguro.
And in reaction to that, consciousness…you believe, and I believe we have a consciousness, but nobody knows what consciousness is. So how we can give a consciousness to the robot, so this is a big challenge for the next decade, I think, he adds.
The Geminoid Research Group based in Osaka, continues its work to create a fully integrated robot, which could exist side by side with human society.
This particular robot, Professor Ishiguro's android twin, has been around for more than a decade.
But to reach that point, Ishiguro says that androids must prove to be safe, eloquent, independent, and sociable.

Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign & STOP MUJI Campaign in Japan
**MUJI announced on 1st Dec that it decided to cancel the plan to open its branch shop in Israel. Thanks for your cooperation.**
We are members of 'Palestine Forum Japan', a Japanese group of citizens calling for peace and justice in Palestine. On 14th November 2010, we held a campaign against the Separation Wall, human rights abuses to Palestinians and Israeli Apartheid policies. As parts of actions, we called Boycott of Israel as a solidarity action with Palestinians and collected signatures to request MUJI not to make a shop in Israel.
MUJI is scheduled to open a branch store in Israel as the first Japanese retail company to do so. As the voice for BDS campaign is increasing from Palestine and from all over the world, we must urge MUJI to halt their plan until Israel stops their apartheid policy. Let MUJI hear your voice! 【Comfort women issue 】 Japanese delegation addressed at 63rd UN-CEDAW Feb.16 2016
The 63rd CEDAW - Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women examines reports of Japan
An Expert noted that human rights violations were considered to occur until the victims had received satisfaction. Could the delegation explain the legal status of the agreement with the Republic of Korea, and how it would be implemented? What steps would be taken to properly investigate the role of the Japanese military? What steps would be taken to acknowledge, apologize and provide reparation to the victims, including foreign victims?
Shinsuke Sugiyama, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs;
Responding to the questions regarding comfort women, the delegation repeated that by the agreement between Japan and the Republic of Korea, the two Governments confirmed that the issue of comfort women was finally and irreversibly resolved. A full-scale fact-finding study had been conducted by the Government of Japan in the early 1990s. However, “forceful taking away” of comfort women by the military and government authorities could not be confirmed in any of the documents that the Government of Japan was able to identify in that study.
Furthermore, the figure of 200,000 persons as the number of comfort women also lacked concrete evidence. Women who had been requisitioned as labor force on the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan, sometimes on a voluntary basis, had been confused with cases of comfort women, and the expression “sex-slaves” contradicted the facts. The delegation also explained that the Government of Japan had been sincerely dealing with that issue through the Asian Women’s Fund, while, in accordance with the San Francisco Peace Treaty and other relevant bilateral treaties, the issues of reparations, property and claims of the relevant parties to those agreements, including the issue of claims by individuals, had already been legally settled.
UN council member:
An Expert said that the answer of the delegation on the issue of comfort women was unacceptable and contradictory. On the one hand, the Government of Japan denied the existence of comfort women, while on another hand, the Government reached an agreement on that same issue. If Japan was so willing to solve the issue, would it send an apology to all comfort women, who had been waiting for their situation to be recognized for over 70 years?
Shinsuke Sugiyama;
In response to the comments made by an Expert, the delegation explained that the agreement between Japan and the Republic of Korea explicitly confirmed that the issue of comfort women was finally and irreversibly resolved. It was not true that the Japanese Government denied history. The Japanese Government was painfully aware of its responsibilities and offered its sincere apologies and remorse. The involvement of the military with regard to the establishment of comfort stations had been acknowledged in the past. However, the figure of 200,000 persons as the number of comfort women lacked concrete evidence. The expression “sex-slaves” also contradicted the facts, and it was regrettable that a Committee Member had raised points contradicting the facts.

China Outraged Over Japan Mayor Calling WWII Sex Slaves Necessary
The Mayor of Japan's Osaka city opened old wounds yesterday with China and the Koreas. Chinese and Korean women were used as comfort women, or sex slaves by Japanese soldiers during World War II.
[Toru Hashimoto, Osaka Mayor]:
When they're out running around and risking their lives, with their emotional state all strung out, they are looking to give them, I wouldn't say relaxation, but something like that, then anyone can understand it's necessary to have something like the comfort women system.
He reiterated on his twitter account that, quote, there's no proof that the country abducted South Korean women and then forced them into prostitution.
China's Foreign Ministry countered the Hashimoto's claim saying it was an insult to the victims of the sex slave trade. Chinese netizens have also expressed their outrage online with a flurry of expletives aimed at Japan.
China and the Koreas have long accused Japan of denying history and playing down their wartime atrocities.
Japan's government has now tried to distance itself from the Mayor's remarks.
[Yoshihide Suga, Japanese Cabinet Secretary]:
For those who have experienced this, it's very difficult and they suffered great heartache. With regards to this issue, the Abe government is of the thinking of previous cabinets. However, we don't believe this should be turned into a political or diplomatic problem.
China and the Korea's allege that almost 200,000 women were taken as sex slaves by Japanese soldiers during World War II.
