Highlights of Victoria and area, as featured in edited excerpts from the travelogue Vancouver Island: British Columbia's Island Playground (1941-42). Made by the BC Government Travel Bureau, this was the first colour-and-sound travelogue produced in-house by the BC government. The film showcases the Inner Harbour; downtown streets and shops; cricket, lawn bowling, golf and tennis facilities; swimming at Thetis Lake; the Malahat Drive and Lookout; the making of Cowichan sweaters at Koksilah trading post; and BC Provincial Police Highway Patrol. Nakusp and Edgewood (ca. 1939) - Royal BC Museum - AAAA1072
This video clip comprises edited excerpts from silent 16 mm film footage shot by Vancouver filmmaker Alfred E. Booth (1892-1977). In the 1930s and 1940s, Booth travelled extensively in the BC Interior, shooting footage of the various regions and communities, including their amenities, businesses, and people. The Nakusp footage includes views of the main street and residents, the retired sternwheeler S.S. Bonnington, the cenotaph, the Arrow Lakes Hospital, and activity at a sawmill. At 2:55 in the clip, there is a brief sequence shot across the lake in Edgewood. It shows the Edgewood cenotaph, Arrow Lake Hotel, Edgewood General Store, and residents at the lakeshore for the arrival of the S.S. Minto. The latter shot is very brief in the original, and is rendered here in slow-motion. The source film is the compilation reel [Kootenay-Boundary area] : [footage and out-takes], one of 39 film reels in the Alfred E. Booth fonds at the BC Archives.
Queensborough Bridges, Past and Present
Up until the year 1960, the dual use (rail and car) bridge was the only way to get into New Westminster, British Columbia, from Queensborough. This old bridge was notoriously bad for traffic, and there were constant problems with ships trying to pass underneath.
A new bridge was built in 1960, and remains to this day. (Re)Claiming the New Westminster Waterfront spoke to people who worked and lived Queensborough and New Westminster, who recalled the bridges of the past and present. They provided interesting stories about the interactions between residents of the neighbouring communities.
These memories are excerpts taken from longer, full oral history interviews done by the (Re)Claiming the New Westminster Research Project. Full interviews can be accessed through the New Westminster Museum & Archives.

SUMMARY
=======
The Colony of British Columbia was a crown colony in British North America from 1858 until 1866. It was founded by Richard Clement Moody, who became the first Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia from 1858 to 1863. At its creation, it physically constituted approximately half the present day Canadian province of British Columbia, since it did not include the Colony of Vancouver Island, the vast and still largely uninhabited regions north of the Nass and Finlay Rivers, the regions east of the Rocky Mountains, or any of the coastal islands. The Colony of the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Stikine Territory were merged with it in 1863, and it was amalgamated in 1866 with the Colony of Vancouver Island to form a new Colony of British Columbia.
