Caribbean muses seduce the spectator into the canvases where they reside. The inspiration of Miguel Conesa-Osuna, a renowned Ponce painter, has lately materialized into these mythical women representing one of the many proposals he has worked with.
I had recently the opportunity to interview this eclectic painter. His life as his work is made up of layers of experiences painted upon his canvas of life.
Ever since he can remember, he has been involved with art. As a child he loved painting upon the walls of his house with his crayons. His former classes of painting have been with known artists in and out the island. Some of his art professors were Carola Colóm (Puerto Rican painter and university professor), José Azautre Muró (Spanish painter), Agusto Marín, Frank Servoni, Tony Albert, and Rafael Ríos Rey (who studied with the well known muralist artist Diego Rivera).
His goal was always to be painting. While in high school he won the second prize of a regional art contest demonstrating his dedication and talent. In this stage he also obtained the prestigious scholarship Luis A. Ferré (former governor of Puerto Rico) to study art in the Catholic University of Puerto Rico.
While studying for his degree in art he was drafted in 1972 due to the Vietnam War. During this period he was able to continue cultivating his art even in the midst of this difficult period when he was transferred to the Third Army Training Aid- Graphics Department of the Military. There he continued developing his artistic skills, now as a graphic artist.
After completing his military service, he stayed in the United States, first living in Georgia. While in Georgia he continued painting and studying. This time he registered at Augusta State University formerly known as Augusta College. In 1974 he was accepted at the First American Artist Exhibition in Paris held at the Concord Hotel in that city. He also won the prize of the Best Show in the 3rd Annual Thomson Georgia Art Festival with the painting The Message.
In 1983, while still in Georgia, Conesa-Osuna was included in Who's Who in American Art. He was also a member of the Atlanta Artists Coalition.
Later on Conesa-Osuna retuned to Puerto Rico continuing participating in collective and individual exhibitions. His work is well-known in the city of Ponce and in many parts of Puerto Rico.
Conesa-Osuna has been involved with innovative views in art. In 1994, he was the first Visual Artist in the island to build his own web page. He was aware of the importance of technology as a publicity tool. He still has his web page which can be visited at

Visiting his art studio located in Ponce permitted me to see the evolution of this artist. From his landscape painting that distinguished his style at the beginning of his career up to the fascinating installations he has named The Portals.
At the entrance of the threshold... the portals stands. This is Conesa-Osuna's proposal where a series of installations are presented. These can be seen as doors to a new world created by this artist. Each three dimensional installation presents different views of a same world. One of these works is The Forest which plays with its name. This installation, in form of a tree, holds within its ancient trunk memories of a long lost forest. This Caribbean view in intense hues provoke the viewer to enter this tropical mystical world to discover unknown secrets only known to the artist.
The Portals evoke a mystical world. These installations made of organic medium, continue with Conesa-Osuna' s most recent work. His later paintings break away from the traditional medium used like acrylic and oil paints. He prefers mixed medium and incorporates sand, branches or whatever attracts his artistic mood and gives an aesthetic vision to his work.
With these portals I was also able to also enjoy the proposal of his Muses. These Caribbean nymphs reflect mystical worlds within our reality. In one of his works, a beautiful Caribbean woman holds within her hands a fragment of the universe. Her power is subtle but shows the influence she has upon the world's harmony.
Miguel Conesa brings a refreshing view into the world of art- always experimenting and presenting different perspectives to well known motifs. He is the portal where Caribbean muses live; changing the way art is seen.

A family gathering at their country house, located at Barrio Portuguese, near the town of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, on which we waited for the coming of the New Year. (2010). This is a nice way in which some Puerto Rican families (in the island) gather to celebrate this special occasion. I divided the filming sequence in (5) five videos, which are a visual historical record of normal family gathering after Christmas.
In this video both adults and children do get together to make some noise with fire works as a jubilee celebration for the coming of a New Year!

Una reunión familiar en una casa en el campo, localizada cerca del pueblo de Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, en donde esperamos la venida del nuevo año. (2010). Este es una manera bonita en que algunas familias Puertorriqueñas en la isla se reúnen para celebrar esta ocasión especial. Dividí la secuencia filmada en cinco (5) videos, los cuales son un récord histórico de una celebración de una reunión familiar después de la Navidad.
En este video tanto los adultos como los niños se reúnen para hacer ruidos con fuegos artificiales como gran celebración por la llegada de un nuevo año!
