Walks in Shropshire: Old Oswestry Video
Today I am walking on an ancient hillfort in Shropshire, Old Oswestry, just outside the town of the same name.
Old Oswestry is one of Britain's most spectacular and impressive early Iron Age hill forts in the Welsh Marches near Oswestry in north west Shropshire. Old Oswestry Hillfort is reputed as The Stonehenge of the Iron Age Period - Dr Rachel Pope, University of Liverpool. It remains one of the best preserved hill forts in the UK, according to English Heritage. Built on lower ground, it is also one of the most accessible hill forts with stunning panoramic views across North Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire.

Hillfort Communities in Early Iron Age Europe
The Iron Age in temperate Europe is characterised by the emergence of hillforts. While such sites can be highly variable, they also share many common characteristics, implying cultural linkages across a wide geographical area. Yet, the interpretation of hillforts has increasingly seen significant divergence in theoretical approaches in different European countries. In particular, Iron Age studies in Britain have become increasingly separated from those adopted in central Europe. This paper attempts to address this issue by analysing the archaeologies of two of the best-known hillforts in Europe – Danebury, in Wessex, southern England, and the Heuneburg, in Baden-Wurttemberg, south-western Germany. The paper highlights that the two sites possess remarkably similar occupational sequences despite being the creation of very different Iron Age societies. These synergies are argued to be a result of similar responses to a shared problem – how to create and sustain a large community of people.

Haunted Iron Age Hill Forts : The Chastleton Witch
A site survey of the Haunted Hill Fort. Chastleton Camp Hill Fort is an Iron Age Hill Fort, located at Chastleton, Oxfordshire, England. To the north of Chastleton Camp lie a series of fallen Standing Stones, known as The Goose Stones, which predate the Iron Age Camp by thousands of years. The legend and Haunting of the Goose Stones is by the same entity who Haunts this site.
Once an old woman was driving her geese across the land when a Witch, The Chastleton Witch, asked her for charity. The old woman refused and the angry Witch turned all the geese to stone. It is also said that one of the fallen menhirs is actually The Chastleton Witch herself, who retakes human form at midnight every night - and wanders the Oxfordshire countryside looking for mischief to make.
A dangerous Witch, but not an inherently evil Witch, if you show The Chastleton Witch some respect, you should survive the experience.
IT IS UPON THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT THAT THE CHASTLETON WITCH HAUNTS BOTH THE GOOSE STONES AND CHASTLETON CAMP HILLFORT - DO NOT VISIT ALONE AT NIGHT !

Sling defence of a British hill fort
Hod Hill iron age hill fort in Dorset, UK. Slinging from the inner rampart to a target approaching the outer ditch. It is very hard for a single slinger to hit a man-sized target at that distance, but with slingers lined up along the top of the rampart maintaining a steady barrage, nothing could survive for long.
