HOKKAIDO - A day in Otaru・小樽 (Japan Travel Vlog #2)
Spent a day in a little town called Otaru in Hokkaido. First we stopped by the Music Box Museum and then had some fun in the snow! At night we decided to stop by the well-known canal (which was nice but kind of over-hyped). I would recommend this place as a fun day trip from Sapporo :)
Enjoy!

BEAUTIFUL Otaru Snow Light Path Festival - Hokkaido, Japan
The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival was the highlight of my Hokkaido trip! Magical, enchanting and beautiful ice lamps along the canal in the snow.
The Snow Light Path Festival takes place at the start of February in Otaru, a town on the coast in Hokkaido, Japan. It's only 30 minutes from Sapporo by train, so you can easily go on a day trip from Sapporo. There are 3 sites: the town centre, Asarigawa Hot Springs and Tenguyama, which is up a mountain ropeway. We went to the town centre site, which has two main areas: along the canal with the warehouses and the Temiyasen former railway line. It starts at about 5:30pm as it gets dark, with illuminations until 9pm. There's an amazing variety of snow lamps and displays. It's so creative and magical! It lasts for 10 days and overlaps with the Sapporo Snow Festival, so you can visit them both in the same trip. In 2020, the Otaru snow light festival will be on 8-16 February 2020.

Sapporo Day 2 - Sapporo Beer Museum and Otaru
Low quality travel guide takes place in Sapporo the city of snow and festivals.
1. Clock Tower
The Clock Tower (時計台, Tokeidai) is a symbol of Sapporo. The building was constructed during the early period of Sapporo's development in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was installed.
Today, the Clock Tower serves as a museum with displays about the building's history and Sapporo on the first floor. On the second floor are displays about the clock and a spacious ceremony hall that calls to mind the simple buildings of the colonial American Midwest.
2. Sapporo Beer Museum
Hokkaido is the birthplace of beer in Japan. Sapporo Beer, one of the oldest and most popular beer brands in the country, has been brewed in Sapporo since 1877.
The Sapporo Beer Museum (サッポロビール博物館, Sapporo Beer Hakubutsukan) was opened in 1987 in a former brewery from the Meiji Period. The museum introduces the history of beer in Japan and the process of beer making. After the exhibitions, beer tastings are available at a small fee. Alternatively, paid tours are held in Japanese that include a tasting session at the end.
3. Otaru
Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. Its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
From the early days of Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s, Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port. It was hence chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by shipping and trade companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.
Kayaking to the Blue Cave in Otaru, Hokkaido
Join me on a paddle to an absolutely beautiful place! The Blue Cave is located just west of Otaru City on Japan's north island of Hokkaido. I had the great fortune of favorable weather on a day I expected rain and high winds (which did move in later in the day) and I was able to enjoy a journey to the cave. The route is relatively easy, just follow the coast to the east for about 2 kilometers and you'll reach the cave. I want to thank the Blue Holic Sea Kayak Station for kindly allowing me to park near their shop for access to the beach. They offer kayak tours and instruction so if you're ever in the area check them out at the link below.
Sorry about the smudged lens on the two GoPro HERO 4 Sessions I was using to record the trip. I was hard to keep the salt water off of them.

Summer in Sapporo | OTARY DAY TOUR | Otaru Canal and Music Box Museum
For Day 4, we visited the beautiful city #OTARU. It's known for the seafood, the #OtaruCanal, the glass shops and souvenir shops, the Music Box museum, and the colorful buildings with western influences. We went there from probably 10am till before it got dark, around 5pm. Technically spent the whole day there. We used trains for transpo and basically DIYed the tour. Everything is all walking distance from each other and their is a tourist center right at the Otaru Canal just in case google maps doesn't work. The day was very calm and refereshing. Otaru is definitely a must when you visit #Hokkaido.

An Afternoon in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan
9th August
The weather changed today and we had quite a lot of rain, mostly quite light. We took a train to Otaru, a pleasant but touristy city, with a picturesque canal. The most interesting sight turned out to be the Antique Music Box Museum. We were just there at the right time as a member of staff played various instruments for us, including a self-playing organ and discs that worked like musical boxes. We had lunch at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, where we had to take a number and wait to be called. Very good quality sushis and not too expensive.
Here is a video of the music we heard at the Music Box Museum:

Otaru Music Box Museum, Le TAO cafe, NARUTO Chicken and of course the infamous Canal. Some of the places to visit when in Otaru.
Tiny bit history of OTARU:
Otaru (小樽市 Otaru-shi) is a city and port in Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, northwest of Sapporo. The city faces the Ishikari Bay, and has long served as the main port of the bay. With its many historical buildings, Otaru is a popular tourist destination. Because it is a 25-minute drive from Sapporo, it has recently grown as a bedroom community.

So we drove from Otaru to Sapporo later during the day to continue the adventure. We stop at the chocolate factory before reaching Sapporo and I just love how they run that place and the chocolate was just perfect to spend our evening there in cold weather.
We checked-in to Unizo hotel in Sapporo once we reach there from Otaru and continue our journey from there.
hey see you guys in next vlog of day 4 for Hokkaido adventure..!!!

小樽運河 北海道 Otaru Canal Hokkaido JAPAN
Otaru Canal 小樽運河 was a central part of the city's busy port in the first half of the 20th century. Large vessels were unloaded by smaller ships, which then transported the goods to warehouses along the canal.
The canal became obsolete when modern dock facilities allowed for direct unloading of larger vessels. Thanks to a citizens' movement, a part of the canal was beautifully restored in the 1980s instead of being landfilled, while the warehouses were transformed into museums, shops and restaurants.
The canal makes for a pleasant stroll during the day, when artists present their works to passing tourists, and during the evenings when old fashioned Victorian-style gas lamps are lit and provide a romantic atmosphere. The town's nostalgic, old-fashioned mood is enhanced by its architecture and layout. A beautiful large canal flows through it.
The city attracts a large number of Japanese tourists as well as Russian and Chinese visitors.
Otaru is well known for its beer, and Otaru Beer, next to the canal, is a popular restaurant with a medieval theme. Otaru is also known for the freshness of its sushi. The town also has substantial shopping arcades and bazaars, but fewer than nearby Sapporo.
