Summer in Sapporo | OTARY DAY TOUR | Otaru Canal and Music Box Museum
For Day 4, we visited the beautiful city #OTARU. It's known for the seafood, the #OtaruCanal, the glass shops and souvenir shops, the Music Box museum, and the colorful buildings with western influences. We went there from probably 10am till before it got dark, around 5pm. Technically spent the whole day there. We used trains for transpo and basically DIYed the tour. Everything is all walking distance from each other and their is a tourist center right at the Otaru Canal just in case google maps doesn't work. The day was very calm and refereshing. Otaru is definitely a must when you visit #Hokkaido.

Tiny bit history of OTARU:
Otaru (小樽市 Otaru-shi) is a city and port in Shiribeshi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan, northwest of Sapporo. The city faces the Ishikari Bay, and has long served as the main port of the bay. With its many historical buildings, Otaru is a popular tourist destination. Because it is a 25-minute drive from Sapporo, it has recently grown as a bedroom community.

Sapporo Day 2 - Sapporo Beer Museum and Otaru
Low quality travel guide takes place in Sapporo the city of snow and festivals.
1. Clock Tower
The Clock Tower (時計台, Tokeidai) is a symbol of Sapporo. The building was constructed during the early period of Sapporo's development in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was installed.
Today, the Clock Tower serves as a museum with displays about the building's history and Sapporo on the first floor. On the second floor are displays about the clock and a spacious ceremony hall that calls to mind the simple buildings of the colonial American Midwest.
2. Sapporo Beer Museum
Hokkaido is the birthplace of beer in Japan. Sapporo Beer, one of the oldest and most popular beer brands in the country, has been brewed in Sapporo since 1877.
The Sapporo Beer Museum (サッポロビール博物館, Sapporo Beer Hakubutsukan) was opened in 1987 in a former brewery from the Meiji Period. The museum introduces the history of beer in Japan and the process of beer making. After the exhibitions, beer tastings are available at a small fee. Alternatively, paid tours are held in Japanese that include a tasting session at the end.
3. Otaru
Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. Its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
From the early days of Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s, Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port. It was hence chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by shipping and trade companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.

Otaru - the town of crafts, fresh seafood, and history.
Elegant and delicious – Otaru!
Upon arriving to Otaru you won’t believe you’re actually in Japan. The reason for that is western architecture. Some of the main attractions in Otaru are herring mansions, Bank of Japan building and Otaru Canal preserved from the late 18th century, that might remind you of traditional cobblestone paved Europe.
All of this makes it the best town to take photos in Hokkaido!! Dress up in kimono and take the best shots your instagram followers would love!
In late 1800s Otaru was an important center of trade and fishery. Time goes by but Otaru doesn’t lose ground! Variety of seafood dishes, exceptional whiskey and sweets are the must try in this craftsmen town.
Among other rare for Japan attractions you can enjoy stained glass and music box museums.
You can’t miss Otaru Port, City Market, and a very atmospheric shopping street Sakaimachi-dori.

北のウォール街 日銀旧小樽支店金融資料館を見学 2013
大正時代末期、北海道の小樽は商業都市として栄え、道内一の銀行の数があり、北のウォール街と呼ばれていました。1893年には日本銀行小樽派出所が設置され、現在は金融資料館として当時の建物の内部が公開され、展示コーナーや金庫などがあります。建物は東京駅の設計で有名な辰野金吾らによる設計で外観はルネッサンス様式の石造り風の重厚な作りになっています。

Museum of Venetian Art
The local glass producer Kitaichi opened this five story museum featuring the arts of Venice. Inside visitors will find displays of Venetian glassware, clothing and furniture and an impressing full sized gondola.

Music Box Museum
The Music Box Museum consists of multiple buildings scattered around the southern end of Sakaimachi Street. One of them houses a small museum about music boxes. The most prominent building is a large shop with a wide variety of music boxes on sale. In front of the building stands a steam clock, which was a present by the city of Vancouver.

Japan Trip: Otaru Glass Workshops Create your own glass Hokkaido97
Sakaimachi Street (Sakaimachi Dōri) is an attractive, preserved merchant street in central Otaru. It lies near by city's canal area. During the development of Hokkaido in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Otaru flourished as a port city, and many trading and shipping companies constructed impressive Western style buildings in the city center to house their shops and offices.
Many of the buildings along Sakaimachi Street have since been converted into cafes, restaurants, souvenir shopsand museums. There are a few glass workshops for tourists to enjoy a hands-on experience in creating the local Otaru Glass.
Glass Workshops
When the herring fishing industry declined in the 1950s, the makers of glass buoys shifted to the production of refined glassware instead. Now, Otaru benefits greatly from the reputation of its glassware, attracting many tourists to its glass shops. In addition to selling Otaru glassware, many shops allow customers to make their own cups or bowls for typically 2000-3000 yen.

하코다테산 쪽으로 넓게 펼쳐져 있는 언덕지역인 모토마치. 언덕 위 고풍스러운 건물은 구하코다테 공회당. 하코다테를 대표하는 서양식 건물로 화려함을 자랑한다. 2층 발코니에 올라 바깥을 바라보니 항구를 낀 하코다테 전경이 시원하게 펼쳐진다. 공회당 근처에는 개성있는 교회 건물들이 모여 있다. 일본 성공회의 시작과 함께 한성 요한 교회. 중세 유럽의 교회양식으로 지어졌다. 가톨릭 모토마치 교회는 스테인드 글라스가 아름다운 고딕양식의 건물이다. 하리스토스 정교회는 원래 러시아 영사관의 부속성당으로 세워졌는데, 삼각 지붕과 세개의 작은 돔이 비잔틴 양식을 보여준다. 서구식 건물들이 많은 이유는 하코다테가 일본에서 가장 먼저 개항한 무역항 중 하나이기 때문이다.

Hakodate hills stretching towards the wider mountain area of Motomachi. The building is quaint hilltop basilica to Hakodate District. It boasts a gorgeous Western-style building that represents the Hakodate. It climbed to the second floor balcony overlooking the misty cool spread outside the view port of Hakodate. Near the basilica church buildings are gathered in personality. Hansung John's Anglican Church with the start of Japan. Medieval church was built in the European style. Catholic Motomachi church is a beautiful Gothic building of the stained glass. Harris is orthodox cathedral was built as part of the original Russian consulate, three small triangular roof and dome shows the Byzantine style. Many Western-style building because it is one of the earliest opening of the trading port of Hakodate in Japan.

函館山に向かって広がっている丘地域である元町。丘の上古風な建物は、旧函館公会堂。函館を代表する洋館で派手さを誇る。 2階のバルコニーに上がって外を眺めると港を挟んだ函館の景色が涼しく繰り広げられる。公会堂の近くには、個性的な教会の建物が集まっている。日本聖公会の開始とハンソンヨハネ教会。中世ヨーロッパの教会様式で建てられた。カトリック元町教会はステンドグラスが美しいゴシック様式の建物である。ハリストス正教会は、元ロシア領事館の付属聖堂で建てられ、三角屋根と三つの小さなドームがビザンチン様式を示す。西欧式の建物が多くの理由は、函館が日本で一番最初に開港した貿易港の一つであるからである。

Japan Travel: Learning and Drinking at the Sapporo Beer Museum, Hokkaido 24 Moopon
Many Japanese have loved beer from when it was introduced to Japan from Germany in the beginning of the Meiji Period. One of the first and most popular beers in Japan, Sapporo Beer was founded in Hokkaido. Being of one the oldest of Japan’s beer, the opening of this brewery dates back to 1876.
Visitors interested in Sapporo Beer are recommended to visit the Sapporo Beer Museum. The museum itself is a former brewery from the Meiji Period. In addition to historical information of beer, visitors can view displays concerning the process of making beer. In addition to learning of beer, visitors can sample various Sapporo Beers for a nominal fee. There is also beer flavored ice cream sold on the premises.
Visitors will the Sapporo Biergarten next to the museum. This red-bricked, old fashioned building houses two restaurants. At the Genhis Khan hall, visitors can enjoy an all you can eat mutton bbq with all you can drink Sapporo Beer meal. The Garden Grill offers diners lamb or crab which can be prepared however the diner chooses. Also the Sapporo Five Star Beer, a premium beer, is available.

Closed: Mondays (or following day if Monday is a national holiday) as well as during the New Year holidays and a few other irregular closing days

*Via “Loop 88 Factory Line” bus (the bus can be accessed from multiple locations in Sapporo). There is a bus every 20 minutes and it is 210 yen per ride.
*From JR Sapporo Station, 25 minute walk.
