Te Kawerau a Maki iwi in partnership over Ōtuataua Stonefields development
The South Auckland settlement of Ihumatao is the focus of a land occupation since a large section of private land was zoned off as a special housing area. More than 400 houses are set to be built at the 33-hectare site that's opposite the historic wāhi tapu, the Ōtuataua Stonefields and adjacent to the existing Ihumatao neighbourhood. Local iwi authority Te Kawerau a Maki say they are working in partnership with property developers Fletcher Building and a quarter of the site along the boundary of the wāhi tapu has been marked as a buffer zone to the Ōtuatua sacred site. But as Hania Douglas reports, the leaders behind the land occupation campaign are set to present a petition to parliament tomorrow, in a final bid to stop the development.

SYM GTS 250 ride, Ihumatao, Mangere, Auckland, New Zealand
A ride around the rural area of Ihumatao which is located at the back of Auckland International Airport and also known as the last of rural Mangere. Most of what you see in the first 5 minutes of the video is soon to disappear within the next 20 years as the Auckland Airport company have started their mass expansion plan which will almost double the size of the airport. Also shown is a ride to the Kaitaki protest settlement were protesters have setup camp to prevent a housing development from building on sacred Maori land.

Mangere Bridge Inspection
NTZA required us to inspect the underside of Auckland's 2nd longest bridge using a drone. Such a task is usually very costly for the taxpayer and involved several days of road closures. Inspecting bridges using drones cuts both time and expense quite significantly.

Auckland Council continues with development despite opposition
A bid to stop a special housing area in South Auckland has been dismissed by the Auckland Council. A 33HA block next to the Otuataua stone fields in Māngere is set to be turned from farmland into a subdivision for nearly 500 houses. Protestors say the cultural significance of the site hasn't been taken into account. The 100HA stone fields were home to the Wai-o-Hua tribe, which turned the area into a sophisticated system of gardens. But the council says adequate protection measures are in place. Under the law, only the Governor-General can revoke a special housing area status under the recommendation of the Housing Minister.

Ihumātao Māori heritage celebrated
A small insight in to the history of Ihumātao mana whenua and the wider Māngere area has been portrayed in an art exhibition at the Māngere Art Centre as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival. At a time where tensions are high among local Iwi in the area with regard to council treatment of Local Māori, a council funded centre has art and history that shows the broken promises and Māori heritage destroyed in the name of progress.
