The city of Ouidah was once known for its brutal yet efficient slave trading system. Van Dora Williams traveled there in 1999 and retraces the steps of captured Africans as they journeyed on the slave route from the interior of Africa to the busy port city of Ouidah on the Atlantic ocean. This segment is part of the Emmy award winning documentary, Noble Desire: A Time for Healing.

TEMPLE OF PYTHON, OUIDAH, BENIN REPUBLIC

In most parts of the world snakes are feared, but in Benin they are revered. Royal pythons are worshiped in Benin, especially in Ouidah. The good news is that royal pythons are not dangerous, but the bad news is that these sacred reptiles are welcome Beninese households where they are fed when the doors of the temple are opened at night. There is no fear when the locals welcome these slithering pythons into their living rooms like an honoured guest.

The Temple of Pythons is a small room of twelve square meters that houses 50 adult royal pythons. Take a picture with a python around your neck or stroke the snakes if you are scared of being strangled. Several shrines were built for offerings to the 'snake-god' Dagbe, but the biggest offerings come from the tourists who pay $1.50 to enter the Temple of the Sacred Python. Voodoo shrines and other relics can be viewed for this entry fee, but taking photos with the snakes can be costly.

Benin played a key role in the development of the African slave trade and was also the birthplace of the voodoo arts. These two ingredients are just a small part of the recipe that makes the complex and rich history of the African nation.

The nation is relatively small and has only a few large cities but Benin begs to be explores and rewards travellers with museums, wonderful architecture and markets that are truly memorable.

The national beauty of Benin also has a lot to tempt tourists. From the paradise Atlantic beaches fringed with palm trees to the national parks teeming with exotic beasts such as lions, cheetahs and elephants as well as rare bird species.

1 Cotonou
It may not be the true capital city of Benin but Cotonou sure does feel like it. The city is an intense blast of urban energy combined with African charm. If it is your first time in Africa, the city can be a little bit daunting and full on but for those willing to risk the adventure, Cotonou has plenty of rewards These rewards include a number of stunning paradise beaches with golden sand and palm trees.The Pendjari National Park is also a must see in Cotonou and is seen as one of the leading animal reserves in Africa.
2 Ouidah Museum of History
Ouidah is a city that has a mix of influence from the French and the Portuguese due to various events in history. The city is located about 40km away from Cotonou and in contrast is more relaxed. If you are interested in African history (and you should be) then this city should be top of your itinerary. It has fantastic museums exploring slavery and voodoo. If all the history gets too much for you, there are more stunning beaches to laze on in Ouidah too.
3 Abomey
Abomey was the capital of Ancient Dahomey for around 300 years starting in the 17th Century. The main attraction and reason for visiting the city is the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Abomey Royal Palaces. Although the palaces have largely been destroyed and are in a ruinous state, the site still has enormous historical value and the tales of kings that once resided here are fascinating.
4 Porto Novo
Porto Novo is the capital city of Benin and former French capital of Dahomey. If you have visited Cotonou first, you will probably struggle to understand why Porto Novo is the official capital city, the population is only around 250,000 and the pace is much more leisurely than Cotono. The influence of the Portugeuse in this area are still clear to see in the present day. Sights in the city include the Royal Palace and gardens as well as the museum of Porto Novo kings.
5 Grand-Popo
The town of Grand-Popo has an intriguing history mainly due to the important role it played in the slave trade. The town oozes with African charm and the people are friendly. The town is about an hours drive from Cotonou and offers a perfect change of pace from the busy city. There are many backside hotels and resorts in the town and the beaches are a great place to relax and swim. The nearby Mono River is a great place to walk and offers a chance to see mangroves and exotic bird life.

Our visit to Benin was short and sweet. We only had a couple days so we made the decision to stay in one place, the township Ouidah, trying to see as much as we possibly could to get a feel for the country. We found a pleasant hotel to stay and settled in immediately. Everyone seemed just as curious about us as we were about them, and as we walked through the town we were greeted with a friendly bonjour from almost everyone. The staff at the hotel was equally friendly and I was able to have some great french conversation, as well as get a few pointers as to where to go and what to see. We set up our mosquito nets, which we had become quite skilled at over the span of our trip, and relaxed to a good book and an early night sleep. We soon found out that as the sun set, the voodoo culture awakened. All around us, we could here the spellbinding chants accompanied by a magical drum beat and other unique instruments. It was a very familiar sound and surprisingly, it reminded me of south american music I had heard before. The next day, as planned, we woke up early to embark on our journey to the beach along le route des esclaves, a dirt road that had once served as the pathway walked by slaves to the beach where the ships awaited their human cargo. It was important that we leave and return early as the heat in the afternoon was close to 40'C (over 100'F), and the route was roughly 7km each direction, so we set on our journey around 8:30am, water in hand. The walk served as a symbolic and memorable journey as we retraced the path that slaves were forced to walk, and we learned alot along the way as there were historical monuments that dotted the dirt road. We also noted how many voodoo statuettes, and white flags (a sign of voodoo, similar to the cross in christianity) were present and soon came to realize just how prominent it was in this country. We arrived at the beach exhausted but fulfilled and explored the large monuments that stood on the oceans edge to commemorate those ancestors sent to the americas. We stood oceanside absorbing the experience and reflecting on what it meant to each of us. When it was time to go back, we were totally drained, but somehow managed to drag ourselves back to the hotel where we literally collapsed on the bed. The rest of our time in Ouidah was spent relaxing, wandering the streets, meeting new friends, practicing my french, exploring the small markets, and visiting the museum that resided in an old slave/trade fort. We finally left this strangely beautiful and magical place speeding on the back of mopeds, their version of a taxi, with all of our bags piled on us and the driver(a frightening experience)and waited roadside for a bushtaxi to take us back to the Togo border where we would return to Accra, Ghana.

Benin is a peaceful country and a real democracy with free elections. Schools and hospitals are good, but their cost is prohibitive for a large share of the population. Before colonization, the kingdom of Dahomey developed in the southern portion of Benin. Royal palaces, temples and artefacts can be admired at various places in the country.
