Cuba: Orthodox believers eagerly await return of Patriarch Kirill to Cuba
Excitement was building within Havana’s Russian Orthodox community as they waited for the visit of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus’, Thursday. Parishioners visited the Lady of Kazan Orthodox church ahead of the Patriarch’s visit.
SOT, Dmitri Orekhov, Rector at the Lady of Kazan Orthodox church (Russian): The Patriarch is the ruling bishop and our first illuminator. He comes to Cuba to pray with us. He inaugurated this temple and was directly involved in the organisation of the Orthodox community in Cuba. Surely, the visit of His Holiness the Patriarch is a new stage, and will always give us a new impetus for the development of parish life and also Orthodoxy in Cuba.
SOT, Larisa Furaeva, Parishoner at Lady of Kazan Orthodox church (Russian): I am very glad that there is a Russian Orthodox Church [here]. Previously we didn’t have an opportunity to go to church because before there was no Orthodox church. This is the first Russian Orthodox Church in Cuba.
SOT, Alina Cuadrado-Gryshchenko, Parishoner at the Lady of Kazan Orthodox church (Spanish): My mother is Russian, so since my childhood I was brought up in the Orthodox faith. When I was four years old, I was taken to my grandmother’s and there I was christened. Since then I have been waiting for the opening of an Orthodox Church in Cuba to be able to go and worship.

STORYLINE:
Cuba's first Russian Orthodox cathedral was consecrated on Sunday, with bells, chanting and incense and the presence of President Raul Castro.
Russian diplomats and members of Cuba's dwindling Russian community crowded into the whitewashed seaside cathedral, which is topped by a gleaming golden dome.
Dressed in a dark suit and tie, Castro attended the opening but left before the full religious service that followed.
His good relations with Russian officials date to Soviet times, and his older brother Fidel and predecessor attended the consecration of a nearby Orthodox church for Greek and other non-Russian Orthodox Christians in 2004.
The new Our Lady of Kazan cathedral has been welcomed by many in Cuba's Russian community, which has dwindled to several hundred as most returned home following the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.
Tens of thousands of Russian technicians and military officers lived in Cuba before the Soviet Union dissolved.
The Russian Church's top foreign relations official, Metropolitan Kirill, travelled from Moscow for Sunday's ceremony, which was also attended by Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon and other officials.
Also there was Fidel Castro's son, Fidel Castro Diaz Balart.
The church, 1,500 square metres and built in two and a half years, is set to rival the Russian cemetery to symbolise the once close links between the two countries half a world apart.
The Metropolitan also joined Raul Castro and others to look at a photographic exhibition, accompanied by Luibov Sliska, the first vice president of the Russian Parliament.

STORYLINE
Pope Francis and the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba next week in a first-ever encounter between the heads of the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches since the Great Schism of 1054.
The pontiff will stop in Cuba on his way to Mexico, where is visiting from 12-18 February and speak privately with Patriarch Kirill at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport.
The Vatican said the 12 February meeting will last for two hours and then both leaders are expected to sign a joint declaration.
Marta Rosa, an official at Havana's Historian Office, said it was an historic occasion.
The split between the two churches nearly 1,000 years ago has festered over issues such as the primacy of the pope and accusations by the Russian Orthodox Church that the Catholic Church is trying to poach converts in Russia.
On Friday workers were already sprucing up the local Orthodox Church and surrounding gardens in anticipation of Patriarch Kirill's official visit to the island next week.
Cuba's tiny orthodox community, a relic of the Soviet era, still worship in the local Orthodox Cathedral, located in Old Havana.

Havana Cuba Tour via Cruise (4K)
See where we visited during our 2 day stay in Havana Cuba via a Holland America cruise in June 2018, while taking in the sights and sounds we experienced. As you can see in this vlog, we did our own walking tour, in addition to a horse carriage tour and one via a 1957 Chevrolet Be Air vintage car which didn't even have seat belts!
We started from the Havana cruise terminal Sierra Maestra- for a more in depth look, tips & helpful information such as money exchange, please see our Havana Cruise Port video here:
The places we visited included:
• Plaza de San Francisco (directly opposite of the cruise port)
• Plaza de Armas, the oldest Plaza of Havana where there is a statue of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and the El Templete Temple where the city was founded in 1519
• Parque Luz Caballero where we took a 2 hour horse carriage tour
On the horse carriage hour we saw:
• Our cruise ship the Holland America Veendam
• The Russian Church called Our Lady of Kazan Orthodox Cathedral
• Parque Aracelo Iglesias
• Iglesia de Paula Catholic Church
• Revolution Plaza
• Almacenes San Jose Artisan's Market
• The Ferry Terminal that takes passengers across the canal
The ride was fine but in retrospect I would have done just a one hour tour instead of 2, as it took a while to get to Revolution Plaza via horse.
Afterwards we tried out some local Cuban food at a restaurant recommended by our Horse Carriage tour guide. For 25 CUC we ate Lobster in Cuban sauce and came with plantains, and a Mojito. The lobster was pretty good- though I believe we got overcharged because a minute after we left we saw the menu of a nearby restaurant selling the same dish for 12 CUC.
We then walked and visited:
• Plaza de la Catedral, where the impressive Catedral de la Virgen Maria is located
• Castillo de la Real Fuerza
• Cuban street art in the form of colorful graffiti and others by local artists
• Iglesia del Santo Angel Custodio church
• Museum of the Revolution
We then took a Vintage Car tour and saw:
• Maximo Gomez monument at Parque del Artires Del 71
• Tunel de la Habana
• The outdoors Military Museum
• Christ of Havana/El Cristo de La Habana
• Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro
Afterwards we walked and saw:
• Jose Marti statue at Plaza 13 de Marzo
• Victor Hugo house
• Bank of Nova Scotia building
• Hotel Ambos Mundos
• Mercaderes Street
• El Cubo Havana Modern Sewer Pumping Station
It was then back to the cruise ship for the end of day 1.
We then took a look at Havana after dark from our ship and you can see our footage in this video as well.
The next day we did our own walking tour and saw:
• Plaza Vieja (Old Town Square)
• Museum of Pharmacy Habanera
• Teniente Rey Street and a marketplace there, including a merchant selling super-cute puppies
• Teatro Marti Performing Arts Theater
• Saratoga Hotel
• El Capitolo, the former capitol building, where we took a break and did some people/car watching
• Parque de la Fraternidad/Fraternity Park
• Chinatown Gate
• Gran Teatro de La Habana/Great Theatre of Havana
• Havana Central Park where there is another statue of Jose Marti
• Gran Hotel Manzana & Cohiba Atmosphere Mall
• Granma Memorial which is an extension to the Revolution Museum
• Havana Police Headquarters Fort
• Cuba Street
• Empedrado Street
• Casa del Marques de Arcos & the Mural of Aristocrats directly opposite
• Palacio de los Capitanes Generales
We then headed back to the cruise terminal, ending our terrific 2 day visit in Havana! The architecture in Havana was very impressive, and the people were very friendly. Please feel free to comment and if you have any questions we're more than happy to answer!
Cuba's Relations With Catholic Church Hit High Point
During decades of frigid relations between the Roman Catholic Church and Cuba's communist government, vandals shattered the stained-glass windows and scrawled their names on the thick walls of Havana's Saint Thomas de Villanueva chapel. But a new chain-link fence surrounds the building, protecting it for a future that once seemed unimaginable. The church is planning to restore the building to its former glory, along with more a dozen more churches, parish houses and other buildings, as part of a quiet reconciliation between the Catholic Church and the Cuban government that has brought relations to a historic high point this Christmas.

Do Cubans care about the visit between the Pope and the Patriarch
On Friday evening, Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba but do locals care about the historic moment?
The meeting is seen as a step in the path towards healing the 1,000-year schism that split Christianity.

SUMMARY
=======
Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz (American Spanish: [raˈul moˈðesto ˈkastɾo ˈrus]; born 3 June 1931) is a Cuban politician who is currently serving as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, the most senior position in the socialist state, succeeding his brother Fidel Castro in April 2011. He has also been a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba, the highest decision-making body since 1975. In February 2008, he was appointed the President of the Council of State and President of the Council of Ministers. He stepped down as President on 19 April 2018.
Previous to being appointed acting President of Cuba in July 2006, he served as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces from 1959 to 2008. His ministerial tenure made him the longest serving minister of the armed forces. Because of his predecessor's illness, Castro was designated the President of the Council of State in a temporary transfer of power. Castro was officially made President by the National Assembly on 24 February 2008, after Fidel Castro, who was still ailing, announced on 19 February 2008 that he would not stand for President again.
Castro was re-elected President on 24 February 2013. Shortly thereafter, Castro announced that his second term would be his final term, and that he would not seek re-election in 2018. He announced on state television on 21 December 2017 that he would step down as Cuban president on 19 April 2018 after his successor is elected by the National Assembly following parliamentary elections. However, he retains his position as First Secretary of the Communist Party, Cuba's ruling party, is head of the constitutional reform commission, and also continues to have a seat representing Santiago de Cuba's Segundo Frente municipality in the National Assembly.
