Clunie Castle Explore
Please help us to visit more locations by donating to our PayPal link.
On a small island (formerly a crannog) in the loch stand the remains of Clunie Castle, a tower house of the Bishops of Dunkeld. The last pre-Reformation bishop, Robert Crichton, passed the property to his near relative, Robert Crichton, Lord Advocate of Scotland. His son James, the notable Scottish polymath better known as the Admirable Crichton, spent his childhood there.
Near the village are the foundations of what is believed to have been a castle used by Kenneth MacAlpin, the first king of Scotland, as a base for hunting in the nearby royal forest of Clunie.
Built upon a hillock on the western shores of Loch Clunie, guarding a trail between the Upper Tay valley and Strathmore. The castle replaced a hunting lodge used by Kenneth MacAlpin, King of the Picts, as a base for hunting in the nearby royal forest of Clunie. King Edward I of England stayed four nights in 1296 at the castle during his invasion of Scotland, before travelling to Inverqueich Castle.
After becoming disused, a new L-plan tower house castle for the Bishops of Dunkeld was built in the 16th century on a crannog within the adjacent loch

Iain Kaye, proprietor of Forest Way B&B and Bunkhouse (near Ullapool) invited me up to create a travel vlog to showcase some local walks and his bunkhouse accomodation.
On Iain's recommendation, Nicola and I head off in search of a hidden gem. A stunning, but rarely visited gorge despite being so close to the NC500 route. afterwards we all head up the spectacular mountain Stac Pollaidh for some scrambling fun. On the way back home we stop at Corrieshalloch Gorge.

SnowRoads: The Adventurer | 90 Miles of Natural Discovery | Zeki Basan
“I am a keen outdoorsman. In the winter I work as a Glacier Guide in Iceland and in the summer I work as a Survival Skills Instructor with Backwoods Survival School and lead my own courses in the Cairngorms. I have a particular interest in the skills that we as people have used to live in nature. After all, the knowledge people had of the land is the reason why we are all here today. By making short films I hope to share my interest and desire to learn more about the outdoors.”

Skye Trail: Backpacking and Wild Camping Highlights
In July 2019 I walked the Skye Trail with with my partner, Andrew, and my dog, Lucky, wild camping and backpacking along the way. It took us 7 days to walk the trail (plus one rest day in the middle). This video features some photo and video highlights from those 8 marvellous days! The highlight was undoubtedly the Bla Bheinn munro - the views of the Cuillins were unforgettable.
You can find more pictures, learning points, trip notes, itinerary, and general advice around wild camping along the Skye Trail and walking the Skye Trail with a dog over on my blog:

My Bluebell Wood--with Video Microscopy
Bluebell time has rolled up again, and this time I was ready, out there, yesterday, with my new Digitech video microscope.
I've yet to learn all the things the video microscope can do, and haven't made the best videos with it, yet, but I think you'll agree my still photo close-ups of the bluebell flowers looked quite smart for a first-timer who was doing video microscopy, on location, outdoors, and are quite worthwhile. All nice and in focus--for a change! (Unlike some of my garden photos and videos with close-ups taken on my usual digital snap-shot camera.)
The bluebells are such pretty ornamentals, anyway, and I should plant more bulbs. These particular bluebells are some sort of Scilla variety. Are they Spanish Bluebells? I'm not sure; but they are certainly more capable of withstanding the hot dry Australian climate than are the more delicate Bluebells of Scotland variety; or the English bluebell you might see in the art of Beatrix Potter. These ones are much, much tougher.
