YUGOSLAVIA: KOSOVO: DRENICA: KLA RETURN HOME
Albanian/Nat
There were emotional scenes on Tuesday when hundreds of KLA fighters streamed out of the mountains of central Kosovo to return to their homes in the Drenica region west of Pristina.
Armed KLA members emerged from the woods and headed for home.
They're heading home.
Heavily armed, and determined, KLA fighters are making the trek through heavy woodland towards the village of Dubovc.
The Serbs still control the areas to the north and west.
Most homes have been destroyed, along with many lives.
This young fighter said his foot was blown off when he stepped on a land mine.
He blamed retreating Serbs for leaving the mines under leaves in the forest.
SOUNDBITE (Albanian)
After the Serbs left, they laid a lot of mines under the leaves with wires, so I tripped on a wire and I lost my leg.
SUPER CAPTION: KLA fighter
The KLA's first step has been to erect makeshift shelters.
Food will have to be prepared outdoors for now.
SOUNDBITE: (Albanian)
I haven't seen my family since the war started. I don't know where they are. But returning home now I hope to find them. We have a small group of six KLA returning to their destroyed homes.
SUPER CAPTION: KLA Fighter
Drenica is where the first battles erupted between Serbs and ethnic Albanians one and a half years ago.
Throughout the conflict, the fighting here has always been intense.

Top Of Mountain in Kosovo
It took us a long time to climb 1000m of elevation near Prizren, Kosovo but we made it at last. By far our longest and highest peak of the trip... it was great to relax at the top and talk to some locals.

Kosovo. Stories of the Displaced 3/4, September 2002
Around ten families from Kosovo-Metohija are living at an old hotel in Sombor. Their stories are similar only at first glance
Story 1:
Story 2:
Story 3: This video
Story 4:
Genesis of the displacement of Serbs and other ethnic groups until June 1999
It is well-known that the transformation of Kosovo-Metohija into a predominantly Albanian territory is a result of the following processes:
I. Demographic expansion of the Albanian population, which has changed the ethnic structure of the province,
II. Dislocation of Serb and other non-Albanian communities under pressure,
III. Purchase of real estate owned by Serbs and other non-Albanians at exaggerated terms.
Displacement of Serbs and other ethnic groups after June 1999
IV. The process of displacement of Serbs and other ethnic groups has continued intensively even after the arrival of the International Peace Keeping Forces on June 10, 1999. Despite their efforts, fear and insecurity of the Serbs and other non-Albanian communities have grown due to the fact that it has been impossible to provide protection against Albanian extremism and vengeance.
V. After June 10, 1999, the process of destruction of Serbian and non-Albanian cultural heritage, and Christian, predominantly Orthodox, cemeteries, was intensified. This process grew stronger with the establishment of the KLA, and together with the destruction of Serbian and non-Albanian houses and usurpation of property rights, representing one of the key indicators that the concept of ethnic cleansing of the Serbs and other non-Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija was in action. This process represented a clear violation of human rights of the Serbs and other non-Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija.
The fourth and the fifth processes were for a certain period justified by the Milosevic's regime, with whom the international community could not cooperate on the implementation of the UNSCR 1244 (1999). After the democratic changes in Serbia-Montenegro and Serbia on October 5, 2000, these processes have continued and the International Peace Keeping Forces have not undertaken adequate and satisfactory measures to stop and prevent these processes. Such a situation contributes to further displacement and absence of return of the Serbs and other non-Albanian communities to Kosovo-Metohija. This increases the level of distrust and intern-ethnic tensions, thereby discouraging the confidence building process and the creation of a multiethnic Kosovo-Metohija.

KOSOVO: SERB PROTESTORS BLOCK MAIN EAST-WEST ROAD
Natural Sound
Serbs blocked Kosovo's main east-west road for a second day in a row, while British troops stepped up their presence in the Serb enclave outside Pristina.
The Serbs' protest follows the grenade attack in Kosovo Polje which killed three Serbs and injured dozens of others.
A British tank rumbles down a street in the village of Bresje.
But the town is quiet except for the sound of mourning coming from the house of
Zivojin Drajkovic.
He was one of three Serbs killed in Tuesday's grenade attack in the village's market place.
His wife, Milena, weeps and asks the other mourners, 'Is this what we deserve?
She will bury her husband later on Wednesday, but her question remains unanswered.
The market attack has enraged a Serb community already bitter about what they consider to be favouritism by the NATO-led peacekeepers towards the ethnic Albanian majority.
Serbs fear Albanian extremists are trying to drive all of them from Kosovo, which Serbs consider their cultural heartland.
To show their anger over the deaths, approximately 200 Serbs have erected a roadblock across the Pristina-Pec highway.
The protesters are demanding that K-FOR increase security for the Serb community, saying that otherwise they will have to leave Kosovo.
They waved Serb flags and photographs of the dead Serbs and defiantly gave the three fingered Serbian salute.

As the funeral procession made its way through the village, the was a heavy KFOR presence.
Troops guarded the road with tanks and helicopters flew overhead as they walked towards the graveyard.
A Serb Orthodox priest presided over the ceremony as Zivojin Drajkovic's family wept by his graveside.
But some Serb villagers looked anxiously over their shoulders- fearful of another surprise attack.

KOSOVO: KOSOVO ALBANIAN ROADBLOCKS LATEST
Natural Sound
Tensions between Serbs and ethnic Albanians have escalated in the Kosovo town of Kosovo Polje.
Both sides are refusing to dismantle roadblocks until the other makes concessions.
The dispute began last week when about 100 Serbs in the Kosovo town of Kosovo Polje blockaded the main road to protest at a grenade attack which left three Serbs dead.
The new Albanian barricades went up around Kosovo Polje on Saturday after the United Nations failed to convince Serbs to remove roadblocks they set up after three Serbs were killed in a grenade attack on Tuesday.
The Albanians blocked the road to Kosovo Polje and the main north-south railway line.
SOUNDBITE: (Albanian)
We have decided to block the railway which we think is being used by Serbs to get food - we are going to stay here until the Serb barricade is removed.
SUPERCAPTION: Izet Mijalica, protestor
U-N officials accused the Serbs of failing to honour an agreement to open the road, and of adding new demands to their existing ones.
Serb leaders said they were seeking a pledge from the United Nations to allow them exclusive use of a local school.
They wanted Albanian students transferred to a building to be vacated by British troops later this month.
U-N authorities, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some of the Serb demands were reasonable but they were reluctant to be seen as knuckling under to protesters for fear the phenomenon of highway blockades would sweep the province.
The new blockades in Kosovo Polje, just southwest of Pristina, have set back U-N efforts to ease tensions that escalated after the grenade attack.
Serbs responded to the attack by blocking the highway from Pristina to the western city of Pec.
