Japan 2015 Miyajima and the Iwaso Ryokan
Miyajima is a small island near Hiroshima and is most famous for the Itsukushima shrine, which is the torii style gates you see in the water. It also houses some lovely ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), which was perfect for our group as we'd been go-go-go and needed some downtime.
We stayed at Iwaso and I would highly recommend it. The back garden was lovely (and you'll see it in the daytime next video), there were indoor and outdoor onsen (hot springs), and we were greeted by a staff member named Chikage, who loved that we were from Chicago since it was so close to her name.
I spent the whole time there in the yukata and slippers, even when out on the boat tour, and it pretty awesome, but they weren't too fussed if you didn't want to wear it.
The dinner there was a traditional kaiseki affair with multiple courses all from fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. To be quite honest, not all the food hit our taste palettes how we'd like, but it was gorgeous, elegant, and a lot of fun to experience. Here's a breakdown of the food:
*apertif: acerola and Japanese apricot UME wine
*Chopsticks dyeing: assorted seasonal appetizers, Sea urchin, Corn, okra and micro tomato with Ginger source
*appetizers: assorted seasonal appetizers
*sashimi: seasonal fresh fish wrapped FUKUSA with flower, wasabi and UME apricot soy sauce
*Steamed dish: steamed Wagyu beef with sesami ponzu sauce
*Grilled dish: grilled conger eel
*Deep-fried dish: Fried shrimp mince, spring roll and asparagus with mustard and SUDACHI species of Japanese citrus
*Simmered dish: HIYASHI-Noppei winter melon, zucchini, Cauliflower duck sirloin and taro, Citron pepper sauce
*rice: baby sardines and Japanese basil YUKARI
*soup: red miso soup
*pickles: pickled vegetables
*dessert and sweet: Ruby of grapefruit, Kyoho of grape, and pure green Lychee with lemon gelee and mint, rice-flour dumpling SHIRATAMA with sweet redbean soup ZENZAI
The first set of seasonal appetizers included eggplant pudding and jellied shark fin something. . . and was really hard to stomach. The dishes after that were better, like the grilled eel, deep-fried shrinp (that looked like crab-rangoon) and wagyu beef. I liked the red miso, and Mace probably would have liked it if he hadn't spilled it all over himself. And as you can see from the Umeboshi (sour pickled plum pit) Challenge, we did have quite a lot of fun trying each dish. The food was excellently prepared, a feast for the eyes, and mostly delicious!
The boat ride to the shrine was a fun tour we added to our stay. I was a little sad we didn't get to go under the shrine, but it was pretty cool anyhow. Plus the tour guide giving us details and letting us smell the thousands of years old wood was unique.
As for the picture at the end? The guy seriously appeared randomly, and I overheard some other tourists that he walked out from the woods around the shrine. He wanted to be in our group shot very badly, so we figured it'd be fun. The volunteer we got to take the picture did the classic mistake of putting his finger too close to the lens, so it created a perfect storm of tourist picture cliches. After he shook our hands, the gentleman once again wandered off into the dark. Which was kind of the perfect way to end the night!
Kendama USA - Cliff Jumping in Japan
Believe it or not, this summer was the first time the entire Kendama USA team was together as one, in the same place. It’s alot to get nine people’s schedules to line up but the magic happened for the sake of our summer Japan trip for the Kendama World Cup.
After days and days of grinding, competition, performances, travel, and little sleep… we finally had a free day in Tamotsu’s parents home prefecture of Nara. This river spot is supposedly a go-to from his childhood. Within minutes of arriving some of the players scoped a potential jump spot across the way. Sessions ensued. Enjoy this laid-back edit.
for the memories.
Special Thanks to Gloken & Tamotsu Kubota
Special Thanks to Jeremy Stephenson for getting us all there.

Teien no Yado Sekitei Miyahama-onsen, Hiroshima
Many people may not know the name Miyahama Hot Springs in Hiroshima if mentioned, however they would recognize immediately if described as the hot springs across from the Aki no Miyajima. Neighbor to this world heritage site and one of the three most spectacular views in Japan, Sekitei is an inn with much to offer. Independent guest units are scattered around a meticulously groomed garden where guests are served fresh seafood from the Island Sea of Japan. Arbors are hidden scattered throughout, connected by pathways made of coal-black cobblestone, with fluttering candles lighting the way. Specially selected wines and locally made Aki-tsu sake, rice wine, is available for the guests’ enjoyment.
The harmony of these elements layered together creates a melodic elegance, creating a serenity that epitomizes beauty.

Mountain Fresh Megahira, Japan SnowBoarding
Some of the boys and I went snowboarding in Japan the other day. We went to Megahira Resort. The snow wasn't great, but we still had a good time. It costed about $50 to get a lift ticket. Only two lifts were open but there was plenty to do to enjoy our day on the mountain.

MULLIGAN SEASON - Mammoth 2014
2014 ski edit featuring Colin Sander, Cheech Sander, Robson Morgan, and Levi Rodriguez.
California experienced one of the worst droughts in decades, and Mammoth mountain wasn't spared. With very little snowfall all year, we still managed to have a couple fun weekends. But we'll definitely take a mulligan on this season. Pretty mediocre all around.

Kendama on the Slackline, Slackline Tricks
Met a cool guy that introduced us to a highly addictive game called Kendama while we were slackin today in the park, turned out he is a 1st Dan in Kendama which means technically he is a black belt :) I decided to have my first try at this very tricky game on the Slackline, i gotta say, it would probably be slightly easier to learn this standing on solid ground
Below is some Wikipedia info on KENDAMA i grabbed for ya
A kendama (けん玉 ?, also written as 剣玉 and 拳玉) is a traditional Japanese toy which consists of two wooden cups of different sizes placed on the center of a wooden spike, with a smaller cup at the spike's base and a ball connected by a string to the center piece. In English, kendama may be referred to as ring and pin and bears similarities to the classic cup-and-ball game, similar to the Latin American world toy known as balero. The principle of these toys are the same: catching one object with another, where both are joined by a string.
The origins of the game are obscure. It can be argued that the vagueness of kendama's origins is due to a common necessity in all hunting cultures for early childhood training of hand-eye co-ordination.[1] It is speculated that the toy may have been invented independently in multiple places, or spread via international commerce.
It is known in places as diverse as the Arctic, France, and Peru.
The French game bilboquet, a forerunner of the kendama, was played as early as the 16th century.[6] The game was popular in the royal courts of Europe, where players caught a swinging ball in a cup at the end of the handle. In North America, the game was both a child's toy and a gambling mechanism for adults, and involved catching a ring rather than a ball. In some native American tribes it was even a courtship device, where suitors would challenge the objects of their interest to a polite game of ring and pin. The Mohave variant of the game included up to 17 extra rings attached to the cord, and game scoring involved differing point values assigned to different rings.[6] Other variants include those played by the Inuit of what is now Labrador, with a rabbit's skull in place of the ball, with extra holes bored into it, which had to be caught on the handle like a skewer; and those that used balls of grass or animal hair.[6] This game was also popular in England during the early 19th century, as Jane Austen is reputed to have excelled while entertaining her brother's son in a game called bilbocatch.

California's drought has made everyone more aware of conserving and appreciating our natural resources. Kendama USA supports getting outside, spending time with your friends, and making kendama a part of a lifestyle of personal growth. In Sequoia national forest, we tried to lay down some tricks, though the hiking legs and short winter days made it a battle.
