Outeniqua - Power Van trip
We booked a trip on the Outeniqua Power Van, which operates from the Railway Museum in George and travels up the Outeniqua mountains. Although this is not the Outeniqua Tjoe-choo, the journey and experience was still incredible. It'll set you back R100 per adult, and R80 per child -- completely worth it for a two-hour trip we thought. To book contact 044 801 8246 or 082 490 5627. You can also email opv@mweb.co.za. Garratts aplenty in South Africa ! Six of them in all , three inside , three outside - one attached to an impressive Cowans Sheldon crane. Also , a selection of other South African Railways steam engines , manufacturers plates , various railway miscellany and some railway poetry - and the coaches used for the 1947 Royal visit . There is also an interesting selection of vintage cars and the museum is also the base for the Outeniqua Power Van company , for rides up into the mountains. The museum is in the town of George , Western Cape , South Africa and well worth a visit !

OUTINIQUA TRANSPORT MUSEUM, GARDEN ROUTE, SOUTH AFRICA
Outiniqua Transport Museum and the Outiniqua Pass Railway trip. South Africa
This is a look around the museum with its many trains, car display, old stagecoaches. It also features our trip on a power van through the Outiniqua Pass with fantastic scenary.
The Outeniqua Mountains form a mountain range located along the Garden Route of South Africa. They run parallel to the coast and form a continuous range with the Langeberg to the west and the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the east. The range was named Serra da Estrela ('Mountain of the Star') on old Portuguese charts.
In 1908 work started on a railway route over the range from George to Oudtshoorn. This required the building of seven tunnels and numerous long cuttings. The line was opened in August 1913.
The first road pass to cross the range into the Langkloof went via Duiwelskop, some 32 km east of George. In 1811 a new pass was constructed and named Cradock Pass after the Governor, Sir John Cradock. It was difficult to negotiate and became known as the 'Voortrekker Road'. In 1847 a vastly improved Montagu Pass was constructed by convict labour, and named after the Colonial Secretary, John Montagu. In 1943, to cope with the increasing demands of modern traffic, construction was started on the Outeniqua Pass, using the labour of Italian prisoners of war. At the end of World War II the Italians returned home with the greater part of the pass unfinished. The pass was opened to traffic in September 1951, having cost approximately £500 000.

Daytrip on the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe Stream Train, George to Knysna & back, 9 Jul 1996
The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, the last remaining continually-operated passenger steam train in Africa, was still in full operation on 9 Jul 1996 when we did the daytrip from George to Knysna and back. Our train was pulled by steam locomotive SAR Class 19D No.3324. En route we crossed with two other steam trains, pulled by SAR Class 24 No.3683 and SAR Class 24 No.3660 in her green attire.
The 3-hour journey stopped in the towns of Wilderness, Goukamma, and Sedgefield. The scenic 67-kilometre (42 mi) route hugs the rugged coastline of the Garden Route before ending by crossing a bridge over the lagoon in Knysna.
Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe was declared an officially preserved railway in 1992, carrying about 40,000 passengers per year at the time. A decade later, it carried 115,000 passengers per year, 70% of whom were foreign tourists. During August 2006 the line was damaged due to heavy flooding. As of November 2006 it was rescheduled to run between George and Mossel Bay (with a stop at Hartenbos).
In 2007, in their wisdom, the train's owners, Transnet Limited, announced that the train was not regarded as part of its core business. Finally, on 19 August 2010 Transnet announced that, following unsuccessful attempts to find a new operator, the train would stop operating.
Outeniqua Mountains
We recently visited George to take some epic footage of the Outeniqua Mountain Pass, to see the aftermath of the recent fires in this area.
Good to see some green vegetation growing again and nature recovering.

MOSSEL BAY’S DIAZ EXPRESS PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE ON TRACK
Mossel Bay’s new light rail passenger service - the Diaz Express - has quickly steamed into the town’s list of ‘must do’ attractions. The service has captured the hearts and the imaginations of visitors and locals alike.
“The Diaz Express was developed in response to the success of a trial service that was run by the George-based Outeniqua Power Van on the Mossel Bay-Hartenbos line at the request of the Mossel Bay Municipality during the 2012-13 summer holidays,” said the company’s managing director, Pierre Poolman.
“It was set up to help relieve the pressure of traffic on the roads between the two destinations, and from the outset it was clear that it was a service that was desperately needed - but also one that the passengers really enjoyed,” he said.
Mr. Poolman said that he and his partners - the managing director of the Outeniqua Power Van, Nicol Marais, and local hotelier and businessman, Albert Wiffen - received official permissions to run the service two days before Christmas, 2014.
The company had previously acquired three Wickham Type 40 Mark II inspection trolleys (built in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s), and had had two of them restored at the Voorbaai Yards in Mossel Bay - the third had recently been restored in Knysna by the Friends of the Choo-Tjoe (a support group that hopes to see the steam-powered Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe return to service between Knysna and George).
Running together, the trolleys provide a capacity of up to 32 passengers per schedule.
Mr. Poolman said that the idea is to provide both a regular, sustainable, year-round shuttle service, as well as a flexible excursion service.
Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm congratulated the company on its successful launch.
“The line follows the coast, and the unhurried pace of the trollies offers wonderful opportunities for viewing the Bay, the beaches, the fynbos, and the mountains from a unique perspective - and you could even be lucky enough to see whales and dolphins in the water from the comfort of your seat,” she said.
“The Diaz Express should appeal to tour groups, independent travellers, and holidaymakers - and given the natural beauty of the route, we expect that it’ll become a major attraction for Mossel Bay and, in fact, for the whole of the Garden Route.”
