A Day of FPV racing in Wanaka, New Zealand 4K
It's Summer in New Zealand, the perfect time to bring out the FPV goggles and head outside. FPV, or First Person View, is a way to put yourself into the cockpit of the drone. This gives the pilot the ability to fly in ways not possible with traditional line of sight methods. Awa Drone uses a hybrid of FPV and LOS, when flying our drones. This allows for more unique shots and hire safety when flying near objects.
A new group of FPV pilots is forming in the south island. Check out the more subtle beauty of this exhilarating sport.

The Super Six at The South Island Champs, Wanaka - NZ Disc Golf National Tour, November 3rd 2013
Join me following the Super Six Playoff at Lismore Park, on Sunday afternoon, 3rd November 2013. [more...]
This was event number 13 of 14 for the year-long, all-seasons National Disc Golf Tour of New Zealand. The South Island Disc Golf Champs was hosted by Martin Galley, and Hazen Simson of Vorticasport, ably assisted by Dom and many dedicated individuals and businesses in Wanaka.
A great turnout saw 17 pairs play two rounds of doubles on Friday. Simon Feasey and I took that out convincingly even with a 2-stroke penalty applied after our scorer transposed our scores on a hole. Two rounds of 17 under was pretty convincing, also.
Saturday and Sunday saw 3 rounds of Singles played by 46 competitors, and I achieved my goal of 21 under, but didn't feel that happy about it after turning the last three holes from easy birdies, into bogies, dropping six shots and keeping me out of the Super Six, which is fortunate for you, otherwise you wouldn't be watching this!
I saw some absolutely magic Disc Golf over the 3 day event, and shot 13 full rounds + practice, in the 7 days I was away. The highlights for me were the awesome hospitality of Martin and Robyn, the brilliant Lismore Park course with 6 new Championship tees, playing very well with Simon in the doubles, driving extremely well throughout the event, driving better than anyone except Simon from the tricky elevated 16th tee, and parking the 117 metre drive on the very dangerous number 17 three times in a row.
It was fantastic to play with U-18 prodigy Edward Cochrane, and to supply him with a pile of drivers after the comp. I had forced him to play with mids and putters for 8 months in Queenstown. Ed threw a 12 under on his first round, beating me by 2 strokes - with no drivers! I doubt I could have done that on a good day.
It was brilliant to play with the ever-relaxed and quick-throwing Russell King, but don't blink! Hazen Simson, who turned on a blinder of a round on Saturday morning, was awesome to watch; both of us on the third card, but only one of us getting up to the top six. As always, it was brilliant to get some rounds in with Dom - whose standing throw is an inspiration.
All weekend on the course, I didn't know where to look, because so much great Disc Golf was going on all around us. A big apology to Akira Kuroe, whom I'm sure I distracted on the tee, when I shouted about a drive on another hole. Sorry about that!
The filmwork is patchy I'm sorry to say; I didn't have my $5 steady cam, and it was so bright I couldn't see the screen on my camera, and just pointed it in the general direction, and hoped for the best.

Thanks to Vorticasport, Outside Sports, the Wanaka crew, and all competitors, for making this such a stand-out event on the National Tour.

Today we are joining Wildwire Wanaka for a day of via ferrata climbing! We are picked up from Wanaka and taken to the climbing site near the Treble Cone ski field just outside of Wanaka.
We get kitted up then do a practice round on the via ferrata which is a style of climbing using metal footholds and you are always attached to a steel cable. Anyone could do it, even if you have never climbed before.
We start to climb up the steep cliff face of the waterfall, the higher we go the more stunning the views get. We can see all the way to Lake Wanaka. We follow a route crossing the waterfall several times as this is the highest waterfall via ferrata climb in the world.
So what do you think of via ferrata climbing in Wanaka with Wildwire Wanaka? Would you put it on your New Zealand must-do list?

A Wanaka Autumn in 90 Seconds
There's a nip in the air, a whisper of winter, as the days draw in close and the leaves turn to gold. It's a season of reflection, of crisp, clear skies and a looking-glass lake.
This is your last chance to play while the weather is warm; so launch the boat, grab a bike, get outside and go hard. Or take time to breathe, to kick leaves and wander. Break out the paint brush, the camera, the rod -- it's time to catch dreams.

2012 Outside Sports South Island Disc Golf Championships Powered by Discraft (Super Six Playoff)
Outside Sports South Island Disc Golf Championships Powered by Discraft.
20th-21st October, 2012 @ Lismore Park, Wanaka, New Zealand
Super Six players; Simon Feasey (18), Damian Peters (18), Ethan Raabe (23), Chris Dickson (23), Joshua McLean (24), Hemi Te Awhitu (25), & Jess Guy (25)
Following the third round, and prior to the prize-giving, the Super Six was held, with Martin creating Safari holes for the competitors. These were all very challenging in one way or another, particularly the final 250-metre-plus hole, across the strong wind.
A large gallery formed, of up to about 40 people, who followed the vicissitudes of the top 7, with Simon Feasey remaining on top, with Damien chasing hard all the way. Simon clinched his New Zealand Disc Golf Champion title, while Damien cemented his New Zealand Disc Golf Tour Champion title.

Lismore Park:
What a terrific weekend of Disc Golf! Thanks to Martin Gallee, Hazen Simson, and everyone who had a hand in preparing and running this most excellent tournament.
Lismore Park is the newest, 18-basket Disc Golf course in NZ. Martin and Hazen have done an incredible job: the course is open, and easily accessible for newcomers and professionals alike, and it is only 5 minutes walk from downtown. There is no tiger-country, no water shots, and almost no way to lose a disc! Still, the course offers many challenges, and on a calm day, many deuces are in the offing. It is well supported by local players, and Queenstowners alike.
I can't say enough positive things about Lismore Park. It is everything a course should be, and nothing that it shoudn't -- at least in my view. It is not intentionally designed to *uck you up, and even wild drives can often be recovered for par. There are no over-water shots, no shrub beds to lose discs in, nor hedges to gobble discs, and precious few trees in the firing line.
It has firm ground from start to finish, with very short grass, and the walking is easy. The baskets are beautifully designed by Simon Feasey, with swooping curves which are far more sympathetic than the square-bottomed traditional items.
Running down, and then back up the park, the elevation changes by around 60 metres or so, with quite a few uphill and downhill tees. All baskets are visible from each tee, and only 5 holes remain to have the full tee-pad laid. The tee pads are well-constructed too, with hardwood beams heading the wood-boardered paving.
Lovely full-colour score cards are available from Outside Sports (Discs too!), and Amigos Mexican Restaurant (Beware the Chilli Tequila!), two major sponsors of the event, and the course. Thanks must go to all the companies which have backed Wanaka Disc Golf, as it is extremely difficult to run a successful tournament or setup a course without commercial backing at almost every level.
The park itself was clearly under-utilised prior to the arrival of Disc Golf, and the rolling post-glacial terrain is ideal, offering elevation without intimidation -- a rare combination. Wanaka is richer as a result of this great addition to the national course list.
True to the competitive spirit, the Wanaka tournament offers beautiful hand-made Rimu trophies, crafted by local disc exponent Matt Gunn (and Martin), while a spectacular cresting wave carrying a disc (see photo) was especially created for the Open division, by Rob Inkster of Select Engineering Wanaka. These trophies are truly worth fighting for, and when Martin produced them for inspection on Friday night, I decided I very much wanted to take one home, and achieved that with a win in the Masters division.
It was my first division win since 1997, when I took out the Queenstown Open.
