The Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway
The spring is fed from the Mamaku Plateau where the water takes up to 100 years to filter through; the resulting water is so pure and clean that it produces a beautiful blue colour while being virtually clear.
The walk to the springs follows a track alongside the Waihou River, through wetlands, across rolling pastoral land and features views of small waterfalls, native bush and the famous Blue Spring with glimpses of trout along the way.
Water from the Blue Spring flows at a rate of 42 cubic metres per minute and could fill a 6 lane (25 metre) swimming pool in around 12 minutes. The water temperature is a constant 11 degrees celsius throughout the year.
The Blue Spring walk takes about one and a half hours each way, starting from Whites Road (State Highway 28), near Putaruru. There is also a shorter walk, 15 minutes each way, to the Blue Spring, accessed from nearby Leslie Road.
The Te Waihou Walkway and Blue Spring is located in South Waikato near Putaruru. With plenty to see and do in the South Waikato area you can easily make a day of it. Enjoy some local cheese at Over the Moon Dairy Company, take your bike and try out the Waikato River Trails, or do a spot of fly fishing in one of the many great waterways in the area.

Old Taupo Road, Putaruru
The epitome of NZ dairy.
Welcome to Old Taupo Road, Putaruru. This large scale trophy Waikato dairy unit comprises more or less 409 hectares and is located in the Putaruru district, a highly-regarded and reliable dairy province.
Oxford farm has been developed to an outstanding level with a range of improvements, unequaled in the industry. These include a state of the art 64-bale rotary dairy, housed in a comprehensive structure that includes an office, boardroom, two kitchens, bathrooms, staff meeting room, computer room, systems room plus many more features. There are also two animal barns housing 420 cows with feed bins, as well as a 500-cow feed pad adjacent.
All areas are established on concrete, draining to two large storage ponds with effluent being processed through a state of the art solid/green water separator process, and then discharged to pasture via a multi-stage screw pump and traveling irrigator to approximately 120 hectares.
There’s a vast range of support buildings, including implement sheds, purpose built calf sheds, workshop and five hay barns.
Housing consists of four very good homes, with the main home boasting four bedrooms, two ensuites, three living areas, double garage and tool room. To compliment the home it has an in ground swimming pool and tennis court along with a large colour steel 3 bay lock up workshop.
The farm is presently supplying milk twelve months of the year with a winter milk contract with Fonterra to supply milk during the months of May/Jun/July at 1100 KG milk solids per month.
The normal split of milking stock is 600-650 cows autumn calving and a further 500-550 spring calving.
Seventy hectares of maize is grown on farm with palm kernal and whole grain brought in. Production under this farming system is around 538,000 kg of milk solids.
Make no mistake, this is one of New Zealand’s trophy dairy operations and a property you would be very proud to own. Call Ian immediately for your viewing.

Te Waihou Walkway
April 9th 2009
The Waihou Stream is totally spring fed. Water from the Mamaku Plateau takes anywhere between 50-100 years to reach the Blue Spring Water flows from the Blue Spring at a rate of 42 cubic metres per minute (9240 gallons per minute). The water temperature of the Blue Spring is a constant 11 degrees celsius, come winter or summer.
The reason for the blue colour (and high visual clarity) of the Waihou River and its spring source is the high optical purity of the water. Pure water is intrinsically blue in hue because it absorbs red light leaving only blue and (some) green light to be transmitted to the observer's eye. Pure natural waters are blue to blue-green in colour because they lack light absorbing constituents. They also tend to be very clear because they lack light absorbing particles. Both particles and light-absorbing matter are efficiently removed during the long residence time of spring water while in aquifers
