Since 1966, the Sintra Mountains have been affected by fires that have destroyed a major part of the original forest, which has been substituted by acacia and other fast-growing exotic species. The forested area of the Sintra mountains is about 5,000 hectares (50 km2).

PORTUGAL: Statue Christ the King - viewpoint Almada /Lisbon
The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Portuguese: Santuário de Cristo Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in the city of Almada, Portugal.
It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar who gave his final permission for the project. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude that the Portuguese were spared the horrors and destruction of World War II.
In 1941 the land which was used to construct the monument was acquired. The construction project began in 1949 and took ten years to complete. But it was only in 1952 that the first construction started.
The first inauguration of the complex officially was on 17 May 1959. On the 25th anniversary of the Shrine in 1984, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. A new plan was approved to recondition the grounds of the Shrine and also to build a Sanctuary, which included a rectory, a chapel, administration and meeting halls and exhibition galleries.
In order to support pilgrimage to the site, in June 2004 new spaces in the Sanctuary building were inaugurated, including a dining room for 150 people and two segregated dormitories. This was followed on 17 May 2005, with the inauguration of a 150-person dining area and 80-person meeting hall, in addition to two segregated dormitories, dining room and kitchen.
Improvements to the monument and sanctuary of Christ the King began in 2006. By 17 May of that year, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. In the following year (17 May 2007), the Pope John XXIII hall was opened, containing eight oil paintings.
________________________
The monument was erected on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea, overlooking the Tagus River left bank.
It is the highest point in Almada, on a plateau dominated by the 25 de Abril Bridge, and close to the Estação Elevatória e Reservatório do Pragal.
It is accessible from Lisbon by car (over the 25 de Abril Bridge east of the crossing), by train through station in Pragal and by ferry over the Tagus, through the port of Cacilhas in Almada.
The monument consists of a trapezoidal pedestal of 82 metres (269 ft) height, formed by four arches and a flat platform, supporting the 28 metres (92 ft) image of Christ.
Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue of Christ the King was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.
The four arches of the pedestal are oriented in the directions of the compass rose. The figure of Christ, comparable to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross, with its arms extended out facing the city of Lisbon, as if to embrace the city. Due to issues of security and safety, the monument was sufficiently distanced from the cliffs on which it predominates.
At the base of the statue is the observation deck, at 82 metres (269 ft), which enables panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Under the statue, occupying a fifth of the pedestal's height, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz) with an entrance from the northern facade. This space is distinctly different with its masonry stone, the northern facade surmounted by cross and the other facades containing narrow doors.
Inside two of the pillars is an elevator system with access to the terrace; the statue is 79.30 metres high, and overlooks the Tagus (192 metres above the river).
To the south of the monument is the Sanctuary building, comprising a rectangular body of three wings, with facades covered with masonry brick.

Sunset at Lisbon Castle | Solo in Lisbon E1
My first day in Portugal and I decided to head up the hills of Alfama and explore Castelo de S. Jorge - an old castle towering over the city. Once there I got to walk around the ruins of an old palace and climb some of the well preserved towers and outposts of the castle for some amazing views of the city.

The Statue That Overlooks It All | Alfama to Almada | Solo in Lisbon E6
All week I'd been admiring the Christ is King Statue and wondering if I'd be able to make it across the Tagus River to pay it a visit. On my last day in Lisbon that's exactly what I decided to do - I boarded a boat to Almada, walked along the old abandoned docks, caught a ride in the panoramic elevator and bought a ticket to access the observation deck of Portugal's highest statue. From there - what a view over Lisbon and the 25th April bridge.
Before that adventure started however, I took a stroll around the oldest neighbourhood of Lisbon - Alfama, and explored everything from the extravagant churches to narrow alleyways leading down towards the river. I also got to see what's left of the Carmo Convent - a 14th century church partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
Lisbon is an incredible city and there is a lot more to see and do than I anticipated. It also has real character - made up of its long history, distinctive culture and colourful neighbourhoods, as well as its hilly topography.

Exploring Lisbon's Ancient Aqueduct | Solo in Lisbon E3
Lisbon of the past always suffered from a lack of clean, drinking water so in the early 1700's King John V decided to build a vast aqueduct to bring water in from the Sintra Mountains. After spending some time in the city centre I decided to take a train out to the ancient reservoir and aqueduct, now a museum dedicated to telling the story of how these incredible structures came to be. I spent the afternoon exploring the main reservoir building and walking across the section of aqueduct that crosses the Alcantara valley.

Belém District | Eleven Minutes from Lisbon | Solo in Lisbon E5
After a couple of busy days I decided to jump on a train at Cais do Sodré and head over to the Belém district - a place where once upon a time sailors and seafarers set sail for new lands during the Portuguese age of discovery. The area is very different to central Lisbon, instead of a busy and frantic urban jungle you'll find gardens, quiet monasteries, elaborate palaces and old watchtowers used to guard the Tagus River as it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
I bought a ticket at the Cais do Sodré train station and for less than 5 Euros I made the 11 minute train journey across to Belém.

Water City
The Water City is a unique real estate project that will create a new downtown, south of Lisbon, overlooking Portugal’s capital.
The privileged position of this former shipyard creates a 2km riverside front with highly diversified visual relationships with the River and Lisbon city center.
It’s exceptional location is just a few kilometers from the international airport and near a 20 Km beach.
Big ideas to a future vision: A place to work and live; A place of culture and knowledge; A place of leisure surrounded by the river
With residential, office/commercial, cultural, leisure and mix use building areas, with a total of 630.000sqm in a 2km waterfront, the Water City has 2 main projects: MULTI-TRANSPORT RIVER TERMINAL - 9 million passengers / a year, with a hinterland of 300.000 inhabitants, connects to Lisbon downtown in about 8 minutes journey. ALMADA MARINA – The unique infrastructures (former shipyard) and location in a high density populated area are some of the factors for the development of the only planned Marina on the south bank of river Tagus. Success factors for this Marina are the landscape overlooking Lisbon, the excellent natural conditions with riverbed stability, sheltered from prevailing wind and waves and also the natural river depth.
The Water City should rise as a new Lisbon tourist destination with Hotels and a Conventions Center by the River Tagus.
The property is currently owned by the Portuguese State and the future owner should acquire the property and develop this new Lisbon South urban area, according to the approved plan (Almada Nascente Urbanization Plan), designed by Architect Richard Rogers with WS Atkins.

How does winter looks like in Lisbon, Portugal. Walk on the Tagus river shore - 29/12/2019 [4K]
Walk from Praça do Comércio (also known as Terreiro do Paço), through Ribeira das Naus, up to Cais do Sodré.
29th of December, the end of the year... But in Lisbon everyone goes out to enjoy sunny and warm day. Unusual, for the rest of the Europe, way of spending last Sunday of the year - sunbathe on the stunning river shore in downtown of Lisbon, when the grass actually started to become green.
Lisbon - safest European capital, in the country with most sunlight hours in the year. This combination is the perfect mix - you enjoy every single day of the year.
Correction: at the end of the movie, the district mentioned there is not Alfama, but Chiado, sorry for this mistake!
----
The Praça do Comércio is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Situated near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço (English: Palace Yard), because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira (Royal Ribeira Palace) until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal, who was the Minister of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, during the reign of Dom José I, King of Portugal.

Second of monuments seen on the movie:
The 25 de Abril Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte 25 de Abril, 25th of April Bridge) is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tagus river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966. It is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US, because they are both suspension bridges of similar color. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 metres (7,470 ft), it is the 38th largest suspension bridge in the world. After the Carnation Revolution which overthrew the remnants of Salazar's dictatorship, the bridge was renamed for April 25, the date of the revolution.

Lisbon is an incredible city and I wanted to learn as much about it as I could, so on the second day of my trip I took a walking tour of the down town area - familiarising myself with the city centre and learning about the capital's history and culture. We took a walk around the neighbourhoods of Bairro Alto, Chiado and Baixa before ending the tour in Praça do Comércio - a spectacular plaza made up of stone arches, bright yellow neoclassical style buildings and a magnificent waterfront.
