Overlord museum is located a short distance of the famous Omaha beach, on the D514 facing the roundabout that provides access to the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer.
Overlord Museum chronicles the period of the Allied landing until the liberation of Paris. The collection was collected by someone who was both a witness to the conflict and involved in the reconstruction of Normandy. Personal items from individual soldiers and armoured fighting vehicles from the six armies in Normandy will be presented as a series of reconstructions showing over 35 vehicles, tanks and guns.

Panther Ausf A Overlord museum - Colleville-sur-Mer
This Panther Ausf A served in the French army until 1955. The barrel comes from Southern France (Perpignan area), the turret is not original to that hull. The original turret from this hull was used to restore Saumur Panther 254.

Der Begriff Gedenken an die Operation Overlord bezieht sich auf die materielle Erinnerungskultur zur alliierten Befreiung Nordfrankreichs von den deutschen Besatzern während des Zweiten Weltkriegs.
Nach der alliierten Invasion in der Normandie (Operation Overlord) wurden auf dem ehemaligen Operationsgebiet viele Friedhöfe, Gedenkstätten und Museen eröffnet, die an die Gefallenen sowie an die Überlebenden, ebenso wie an die Geschehnisse erinnern sollen. Zur Entlastung der Roten Armee hatte Josef Stalin die Westalliierten zur Eröffnung einer zweiten Front gedrängt. Auf der Konferenz von Teheran im November 1943 wurden daher Landungen in Nord- und Südfrankreich, die Operationen Overlord und Anvil beschlossen.
Auf der Casablanca-Konferenz wurde in Abwesenheit Stalins die Gründung eines kombinierten Hauptquartiers, des Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, beschlossen. Die Führung der Supreme Allied Commander übernahm Dwight D. Eisenhower. Sein Stabschef wurde, unter der Bezeichnung Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander, der Lieutenant-General (Generalleutnant) Frederick E. Morgan, der dann die Planungen für die Operation Overlord leitete. Als Hauptziele der Planungen war die Kontrolle der größeren Städte Caen, Bayeux, Saint-Lô und Cherbourg vorgesehen.
Nachdem es den Alliierten gelungen war, erfolgreich an den Stränden zu landen, verschoben sich die Kampfhandlungen in das Hinterland. Die Deutschen leisteten erbittert Widerstand und aufgrund des Bocage entwickelten sich die Kämpfe zeitweilig zu einem Stellungskrieg. Insgesamt dauerte die Operation Overlord etwa drei Monate, wobei der Endteil relativ schnell voranging.

Just a short video of the Overlord Museum in Colleville-sur-Mer in Normandy. I loved the diorama-like arrangement of the display, everything looked very lifelike to me. The drawback is of course that you can not approach the vehicles very close, which is very interesting for me as a model builder in particular.
Operation Overlord was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, the Allied operation that launched the successful invasion of German-occupied western Europe during World War II. The operation commenced on 6 June 1944 with the Normandy landings (Operation Neptune, commonly known as D-Day). A 1,200-plane airborne assault preceded an amphibious assault involving more than 5,000 vessels. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on 6 June, and more than three million Allied troops were in France by the end of August.
