Little Cayman & Owen Island - All to Ourselves
Little Cayman is a place you want to go to get away from it all. It's best known for it's diving, but there's plenty to do above the water line too! One of those things is to explore Owen Island.
Owen Island is a small, uninhabited island just off the south shore of Little Cayman. It's tucked inside the reef which creates a large lagoon area. There's only one way to get there. By Boat. We rented a kayak from the Southern Cross Resort which is located not far from Owen Island. Just go inside the resort's clubhouse and they will help you out.
Be sure to pack water, sunscreen and some cold adult beverages is you plan to stay out there for more than an hour. It gets hot! We packed a cooler with sandwiches, water and the local White Tip Lager which we enjoyed as we explored Owen Island. This video gives you a small taste of the beauty you will find.
As always...#JustGo!
Cheers,

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Little Cayman: HD Travel
There are no inclusive resorts in the sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman; no casinos; golf courses; little in the way of shopping, and just a few restaurants. But they have birds, trails, cliffs, reefs, and caves. They move to the rhythms of the natural world. Owen Island is a true desert island off the southern coast of Little Cayman. The isle has no lights; no electricity; no man-made structures; no men or women. Just talcum-soft white sand, driftwood, scrub and a lagoon. It is the pefect place for a Digital Detox.
Little Cayman, Cayman Islands, Caribbean
Little Cayman is a tiny, eco-friendly island, just ten miles long and about a mile wide, with crystal clear azure waters lapping pristine white sandy beaches it has some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world and represents a veritable Caribbean paradise. The handful of resorts on the island do their part to ensure they preserve the pristine eco-system of the island.
An important site for nesting birds, Little Cayman has the largest known breeding colony of the Red Footed Booby in the Caribbean as well as a breeding colony of magnificent Frigate birds. The island's 203 acre Booby Pond Nature Reserve, administered by the National Trust, is the first RAMSAR (the intergovernmental treaty on wetlands) site in the Cayman Islands. Little Cayman is also home to the rare Little Cayman Rock Iguana (Cyclura nubila caymanensis) which is found nowhere else in the world save here and in Cayman Brac.
Real estate in Little Cayman is limited but still relatively abundant compared with the size and population of the island. There is a great opportunity in Little Cayman to buy land which can be a good low maintenance investment choice. Little Cayman also has condominiums and residential homes for sale which make an exceptional lifestyle choice in a place that is truly unique, a beautiful unspoilt Caribbean paradise.

Exploring Little Cayman for the first time
I traveled to Little Cayman for the first time to help my friend who is filming a documentary. Little Cayman is one of Grand Cayman's sister islands, the other being Cayman Brac. Your experience starts by getting there on a tiny plane, to visit the smallest airport I've ever seen. Life in Little Cayman is well, little. It's a Caribbean island that's mostly untouched with amazing bird life, gorgeous beaches and complete tranquility. I hope this travel vlog gives you a good taste of the beauty of Little Cayman. I can't wait to go back.
As you'll see in the video, I also managed to crash my drone. Luckily, after a quick clean we managed to get it flying again. Praying it keeps going and doesn't have any late side affects.

Little Cayman residents watch native wildlife fall prey to free ranging cats
Free-ranging cats have long been on conservationists' radar as a threat to native species in the sister islands.
Little Cayman residents said sister islands rock iguanas, booby birds, and other native fauna have seen their populations decimated by these invasive felines.
It may be the smallest of our three islands, but Little Cayman's native wildlife is a big draw for visitors, and point of pride for residents.
National Trust Little Cayman chair Betty Bua-Smith said feral cats and free-ranging domestic cats have taken a bite out of some sensitive local populations.
We have the lion lizard, the Jamaican anoles, our young iguanas, things that people always have seen for years around their homes, said Ms. Bua-Smith. People are coming to my office, 'Betty what can we do?'
One Little Cayman property owner who asked not to be identified sent Cayman 27 pictures of free-ranging cats near his condo.
These cats seem to have effectively scrubbed the grounds of native Cayman animals because it's what cats do said that condo owner in an email.
High-flying frigate birds and other native avian species are also at risk.
It's mating season for our frigates and our boobies, said Ms. Bua-Smith. The young chicks, it won’t be long if something doesn’t happen, with all the cats, the feral cats that are running around the sanctuary here, they will be attacking them again.
Last February, the Department of Environment and Department of Agriculture were poised to launch a cull on Little Cayman. That plan was shelved when two animal welfare organisations secured an injunction in the courts.
Ms. Bua-Smith fears time is running out for Little Cayman's native wildlife.
I do think that it could be brought under control sooner than later, before we end up having even less rock iguanas, the anoles, the lion lizards and so forth, said Ms. Bua-Smith.
Last August, new prescribed poisons regulations were added to the Animals Law, which some believe closes a loophole used to block the cull.
The matter remains with the courts.

Little Cayman Island Diving Review
Little Cayman Island is a great place to dive in the Caribbean. Clear water, lots of turtles, and friendly marine life are all part of the diving scene here. We stayed at the Little Cayman Beach Resort, which we thought was one of the nicest land based resorts we have visited.
