Heather Hughes, Assistant Curator, Tom Thomson Art Gallery introduced the students involved in the project. Bill Murphy, President of Little Theatre Owen Sound (Roxy Theatre) added that the Theatre proudly supports the project as did Morag Budgeon, representing the Owen Sound Artists' Co-op. Billy Goodkat spoke on behalf of the students and provided Council with a PowerPoint presentation of the concept for the mural. City Council approved the project and thanked everyone involved for undertaking and supporting the beautification of the City.
City Council welcomed Richard Thomas of the Community Waterfront Centre Committee (Marine and Rail Museum). Mr. Thomas provided City Council with an update of the group's activities respecting the Owen Sound Marine and Rail Museum including the names of the representatives on the committee, fundraising pledges to date of just under $20,000 and a generous donation by the Owen Sound Transportation Company in the amount of $5,000. The group is working on a website which will be launched shortly at oscwfc.ca.
City Council welcomed John Howard, Manager of Parks and Open Space. Mr. Howard updated Council on the level of infestation in the City of the Emerald Ash Borer which is destroying ash trees here and in various areas around the world. The Emerald Ash Borer arrived in North America from Asia and has no natural predators. Mr. Howard emphasized that the spread of the Ash Borer is a growing problem as humans transport the insect from place to place, usually when bringing in firewood from outside of the Municipality. An inventory of ash trees in the City is being undertaken so that they can be analyzed and prioritized to determine if they can be salvaged.
City Council approved the borrowing upon debenture of $182,892 towards the cost of solar panel installations and $1,258,597 towards the cost of various capital projects.
City Council authorized the execution of an Agreement by the City Manager with the Bluewater District School Board for the maintenance of tennis courts at West Hill Secondary School, pending confirmation of coverage from the City's Insurance Company. Craigleith to Sauble Falls Provincial Park - Ontario Bike Tour #2 - Day 5 of 10
This video summarizes Day 5 of my 10 day solo bicycle trip along the shores of Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron in Southern Ontario, Canada. All of the clips in the video were filmed on Tuesday July 24, 2018.
In this video I mentioned my 2014 bike tour of the Bruce Peninsula. Unfortunately I don't have videos from that trip, however I have a photo album on my website which describes it in pretty good detail:
Starting from Craigleith Provincial Park I rode onto Highway 26 briefly but then joined the Georgian Rail Trail via Hidden Lake Rd. This trail follows the route of the former Northern Railway Line and goes past Blue Mountain, Craigleith Ski Club and the Alpine Ski Club. It also goes past Georgian Peaks Ski Club. When I got to the community of Thornbury I left the trail, crossed the Beaver River and rode on Arthur St and Bruce St to the Thornbury Bakery Cafe for breakfast. Afterwards I rejoined the trail which terminates in the Town of Meaford where I crossed the Big Head River. After exploring around Meaford briefly I headed west along Nelson St W and then took Gardiner St to join County Rd 12. This took me to Oxmead where I continued west on Side Rd 16. I turned south at the 11th Line and then continued West from Elmheldge on County Road 10 aka Gerald Shortt Pkwy. It started raining here but the rain stayed pretty light and didn't last for long. After Concession Rd 1 the name of the road changes to Grey County Rd 18. I rode through Rockford and then turned and headed North when I got to Inglis Falls Rd. I rode into Owen Sound along 2nd Ave SE and E following beside the Sydenham River. In Owen Sound I explored the harbour and then stopped for lunch at Sabitri's Global Cuisine which is across from the Owen Sound Artists' Co-Op. After lunch I stopped at the Metro grocery store and then headed out of Owen Sound along 2nd Ave W, 14th St W, 13th St W and Grey County Rd 17B aka Derby Keppel townline into Georgian Bluffs. I rode about 5km NW along Highway 6, which really isn't suitable for biking on. When I got to Ledgerock Rd I headed south and joined Concession 3 heading west. I then headed north along Side road 5 which eventually curves west and becomes Concession Rd 5. After crossing County Road 10 the name changes to Park Head Rd and I was now in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula which is part of Bruce County. I turned north when I got to Allenford Rd and then took Silver Lake Rd heading west. I rode north along Bruce County Road 14 which becomes Side Rd 15 after crossing Bruce County Rd 8. I then followed Rankin Bridge Road which took me right to Sauble Falls.
Strava for Day 5:
The bike I used for this trip is a New York made Linear Recumbent Bike which I believe is from around 2004. I carried my gear in 2 Giant Waterproof Panniers, and mounted my tent and sleeping pad on the top of the rack.

SHAWNA CASPI in Owen Sound, Ontario. Grace (original)
Shawna Caspi was charming and genuine. Her words were thought-provoking and her music was healing. We feel blessed to have met her and we are grateful for her spending her time and talent with us in in Owen Sound in this important event. On both local TV and on stage Shawna brought awareness to violence against women and encouraged people to be louder, to be the change! We enjoyed a lovely concert after the vigil. This singer/songwriter's music will warm the soul...even in the cold of Canadian winter. Thank you Shawna ~ Mossy Gatherings.
What an experience! With rare sensitivity, Shawna Caspi guided the audience from mourning to celebration with her warmth and charm. A multi-gifted singer, songwriter, guitarist and story-teller, Shawna's relaxed personal approach, her mellifluous voice and professional musicianship gave the event drama, humour, and appreciation of the human condition. Great talent, energy and personal charm. Shawna speaks to the heart -- a winner! Hey Mossy Gatherings, bring her back soon Sylvia Moss -- member of the audience.

Pre-Order: 'West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson @
The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is named for the iconic Canadian landscape artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917) and houses one of Canada's largest collections of his work. Thomson, who grew up and is buried in the Owen Sound area, was a maverick, a break-away artist who fused a passion for the wilderness with a new style of skillful and experimental painting.
Works by Tom Thomson -- who inspired the formation of the Group of Seven through his transformative portrayal of the natural world - and his contemporaries are on permanent display in the gallery's intimate Thomson Room. Exhibitions of Thomson's oil sketches, graphics, memorabilia and archival materials offer unique insight into one of Canada's most influential artists of the 20th century.
