WALK and DRIVE at KARANGAHAKE GORGE -Owharoa Falls- NEW ZEALAND
VIDEO LOCATION: Owharoa Falls is a staircase waterfall in New Zealand, located off Waitawheta Road, near State Highway 2, between Paeroa and Waihi
The Karangahake Gorge lies between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges, at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. A sharply winding canyon, it was formed by the Ohinemuri River. State Highway 2 passes through this gorge between the towns of Paeroa, Waikino and Waihi. This road is the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty.

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, New Zealand
Visited the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway in New Zealand. It's about an hour's drive south of Auckland. The townships of Karangahake, Owharoa, and Waikino used to be mining centers in the early 1900s. Today, you will find relics along the 7-kilomter (just under 5 miles) walkway: old railroad tracks, mining tunnels, bridges, an old battery, and even waterfalls! It makes for a beautiful hike or run.

Hauraki Cycle Trail - 2015
The Karangahake Gorge is a former gold mining area which was active from 1875 to about the 1920s. Part of the trail runs along the track bed of what used to be the East Coast main trunk line from Auckland through to Tauranga and beyond.
I stayed at Pukeko Lodge, Paeroa and joined the cycle trail 2 km to the north on my way to Tauranga via some back roads that bypass a lot of the busy State Highway 2. At the partly dismantled Crown battery gold processing works the trail becomes an elevated walkway over the top of a road bridge crossing the Ohinemuri river.
This takes you to the entrance of the railway tunnel which is about 1100m long. After another bridge the trail continues to Owharoa Falls where you can either continue on the trail or take the back roads to Athenree Gorge.
This is the updated full-screen version.

Biking Karangahake Gorge
Mountain biking up Karangahake Gorge. Nice river trail with tunnels and bridges. Bit of a slog pushing up through the bush on the Dubbo 96 track, but the reward is some nice descending single track.

Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail
From the flanks of Mt Ruapehu to the coastal shores of Whanganui, the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail is a route encompassing majestic mountains, stunning native forest, and the spiritual, cultural and historical highlights of the Whanganui River.
Part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail traverses the alpine majesty of Mt Ruapehu, historic coach road and bridle trails, tranquil indigenous forest via two National Parks, the legendary Bridge to Nowhere, a jet boat transport option for the Whanganui River link to Pipiriki, and a country road trail abundant with history and culture alongside the Whanganui River from Pipiriki to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui.
Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, Paeroa :: Long White Gypsy
What better way to spend a winter long weekend than hiking the beautiful Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.
This track starts from the Karangahake Domain Car Park on State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. It is approximately 60km from Hamilton, and 130km from Auckland.
The track is shared use (as most of New Zealand's tracks are), meaning that you will most likely encounter mountain bikes on the way. This is not too much of an issue, as for most of the way the track is a wide gravel road giving plenty of space for mountain bikers and hikers to travel easily abreast of each other.
You have a choice of tracks to take on this hike. The main route is 4.3km return to Waikino where the train to Waihi departs from. The DOC website states this is a 4hr return trip, but most hikers will be able to complete this within 3 1/2 to 3 1/4 hours.
Along this track you will come across the Victoria Battery complex. Begun in 1896, Victoria Battery was a quartz crushing plant for gold extraction in Australasia, capable of crushing over 812 tonnes or ore each day to the consistence of sand. The cyanide process was used for extracting the gold from the ore by converting it to a water soluble complex.
The second option is to take the Rail Tunnel Loop, a distance of 2.5km (or 20-45 min duration) from the carpark. The main feature of the loop track is the 1.1km rail tunnel (well lit) which leads from the end of the Western Portal Bridge to the Eastern Portal Bridge over the Ohinemuri River. We incorporated the rail tunnel into our hike of the Historic Walkway track, for a grand total of 4hr 30min (including a 20minute rest break in Waikino)
Dogs are permitted on the track, but on a leash only.
The track is easy walking, for all ages and levels, being flat all the way (due to walking along the base of the gorge).
**Optional Side-Trail :: Whereas Owharoa Falls is probably the biggest waterfall tourist attraction along this route, it is well worth taking the 5-10 minute side trail to the Karangahake Waterfall, which you'll find about 10-15 minutes along the track after the junction with Eastern Portal Bridge.
