Newly-restored Oxford revealed at Air Force Museum of NZ
The latest historic aircraft to be restored by the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram, Christchurch, was officially wheeled out of the hangar for the first time on 3 February 2016, after 14 years and more than 30,000 hours of work.
The Airspeed Oxford, a wartime trainer aircraft built in England in 1945, had been under restoration since 2001, when it arrived at the Museum from Canada. It is a project that has been a labour of love for the many staff and volunteers who have worked on it over the years.
The RNZAF operated 299 Oxfords in all during World War Two – more than nearly any other aircraft type. Of wooden construction, with plywood and fabric coverings, they were used for various aspects of air crew training, as well as general reconnaissance, communications and aerial survey work. More than 100 of the aircraft were based at the Flying Training School at Wigram for much of World War Two. Seeing the aircraft on the tarmac in front of the Museum’s historic hangars was therefore an especially symbolic moment, as it recreated what would have been a common sight there more than 70 years ago.
The restored Oxford is now on public display in the front window of the Museum’s new extension.

A day in Oxford | Vlog
One day during our London weekend was dedicated to a day trip to Oxford! We went and visited the University of Oxford, as well as, and I quote, all the Tolkien things. What a great day.

Oxford Down Flock at Chiltern Open Air Museum
These are the Oxford Down lambs born in April 2010, with them are several ewe's that are either too old or not fit enough to be put to the ram this year. Some have not put on enough condition after lambing and because this is not a commercial flock they are afforded a year off. They will be fattened up with the lambs until next year. The dog is Ted and he keeps them in order when required. The lambs will be ear tagged soon with an electronic UK flock No., an individual UK no., the Oxford Down flock no. and an individual Oxford Down no.(that should be enough!!)
There's a saying amongst sheep men that goes like this;
'There's no good flock without a good shepherd, and there's no good shepherd without a good dog.
Volunteer Shepherd, Steve Stone, and his sheep dogs, Ted and Moss pay regular visits to check on the sheep throughout the year. Whenever they visit, the flock is quickly gathered by the dogs for a close up inspection. When attention is required like trimming feet or worming, then the dogs keep the sheep in the right place using their herding skills.
These dogs are bred to work and it shows in their obvious enjoyment every time they are given the opportunity. Responding instantly to commands given by word or whistle they are able to take the flock wherever the shepherd desires, they are capable of working at great distances, sometimes over half a mile away from the shepherd.
Moving the Bristol Freighter at the Air Force Museum of NZ - 1 of 4
Watch the Air Force Museum of NZ's tech team move one of our largest aircraft, Bristol B.170 Freighter NZ5903, from the storage hangar, across to its new home in the back of our new display hall.
This was a surprisingly precise and delicate operation, as due to the aircraft's large wingspan, it needed to come in on an angle and then be adjusted once one wing was inside so that the other could clear the doors.
