Oxley Creek Common: UQ research project with Dr John Dwyer
20 million trees is an Australian Government initiative facilitated by the National Landcare Program that set the goal of having 20 million new trees in the ground by 2020. The Oxley Creek Catchment Association won a tender to plant 27,000 trees along the walking track at the Oxley Creek Common., the trees would establish a wider forested area for wildlife and soil stabilization.
the University of Queenslands, Dr John Dwyer, thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to use these new plantings as a research plot to get hard data on the revegetation process in South-East Queensland. The Oxley Creek Catchment Association also enlisted the help of a direct seeding plow to create a forested buffer around the UQ research plots and to begin the process of regenerating a native seed bank with nitrogen rich soil.
16,000 trees and shrubs were planted during Brisbane’s hottest November on record and all of it was recorded by Dr John Dwyer, plant ecologist at the University of Queensland.

Oxley Creek Before / after Brisbane Flood January 2011
During the 2011 Brisbane flood I watched anxiously as the Brisbane river crept over the bank where it meets with oxley creek. This meant that our street would be flooded soon.
The large boat in the 'after' shot looks as though it would have been parked there by a skipper trying to avoid having it destroyed by the bridges further downstreem. He would have had to steer it against the flow of Oxley creek to get it up on the grassy bank...a really clever idea as there seems 2b no damage to the boat

What are the main things Brisbane homeowners should consider when buying a solar power system?

Video Transcript:
- We're in the greater suburbs of Brisbane. This is a suburb called New Beith, out towards Ipswich. Utilizing LG NeOn-2 panels here, 330 watt NeOn-2 panels. 52 panels, which gets them just a touch over 17 kilowatts. Excellent savings here though. This is a large home, ducted air, could be looking at a bill over 800 to 1200 a quarter. With the system we've got and the battery we've got here, we can get that down to zero.
Springer Solar only utilizes employees for their systems. We don't subcontract our work. We have a team of electricians and apprentices and qualified roofers amongst our staff to ensure the system gets installed correctly to first time every time. The things to consider when installing and choosing your solar system provider is the quality of the components that they're using, the longevity of the company, the longevity of the providers of the equipment. How long has that company been around? Are they using their own installers? Are they subcontracting their work? What does the design look like? How has that design been presented to you on the roof? Are you aware of how that system's gonna look on the installation? Where's the inverter going? Is that inverter going out in the sun? Is it going in the garage? All these things make up an installation.
Solar is not just about price. We're not just comparing a five kilowatt system to a five kilowatt system. There are so many more factors to think about. Houses with multiple roof surfaces with multiple azimuths might also need a micro inverter or an optimized solution. No point having a high quality product in your panel with a poor quality installation or the wrong inverter chosen for the job. Most residential properties can install a high quality solar system and have it paid back under five years, and that would be our worst case scenario. This many solar systems have never been more viable and more economical.
