Oya-ji: Heiwa kannon, le temple et Oya stone à Utsunomiya
Le Ōya-ji est un temple bouddhiste de la secte Tendai situé dans la ville d'Utsunomiya, préfecture de Tochigi au Japon, fondé par Kūkai, fondateur de la secte Shingon, en 810. Le temple a été reconstruit dans les années 1615 à 1624.
En face du temple se trouve une carrière qui a été transformée en un parc. Celui-ci dispose d'une imposante statue de Kannon Bodhisattva, appelée le « Kannon de la paix sculpté après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

This Buddha has been carved into the rock face in honor of the people who died during World War II. It is a statue of Kannon that took 6 years from 1948 to complete and rises to a height of 27m. After climbing up the stairs to the top of the statue, you can get a panoramic view of the town of Oya.

Oya-ji (Oya Kannon 大谷観音 ) Temple, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
坂東巡礼 第１９番 大谷寺 大谷観音
Oya-ji Temple is located an hour bus ride from JR Utsunomiya Station in Tochigi Prefecture. This temple is located among mountainous surroundings and when I went to the temple, I saw a lot of quarrying done on the mountains around this temple.
The main worshipped deity of this temple, Oya Kannon is carved right onto the rock inside the temple Hondo. It is a large Kannon statue and extremely awe inspiring. Hope you get a chance to go there and see the statue. Unfortunately, since no photographs are allowed inside, I could not put that inside this montage. Enjoy!

Day Trip to Tochigi | J-Vlog #4
On Saturday (14.09) all the exchange students and I went to Tochigi on a bus trip for the day. Tochigi is a beautiful old style Japanese town in which we took an amazing boat ride where koi swam next to us and we got to feed and get real close with them. We also visited a beautiful shrine hidden away in the mountains and had a Zazen experience where we meditated. If you didn't stay awake or your posture was off, the monk would come and smack you with a stick! It was a very unique and entertaining experience, and the landscapes on the way were absolutely beautiful.
If you like koi fish, you will love this video.

The 4m-high Thousand-Armed Kannon carved into the rock is enshrined as the main object of worship and it along with 9 other Buddha figures carved into the rock face have been nationally designated both as Special Historic Sites and Important Cultural Properties. It’s been said that the Kannon was created by the Buddhist monk Kobo-Daishi but according to recent research, it shares many points in common with the stone Buddhas of Bamiyan so it is now thought that it may have actually been built by Afghan monks.
