Oyama Shrine, Kanazawa City
Oyama Shrine is located in Kanazawa City (in the Ishikawa Prefecture), near the Kanazawa Castle area. This Shrine was built as a dedication to Lord Toshiie Maeda, founder of the Kaga clan and his wife Omatsu. Kaga clan or the Maeda family was ruling clan for Kanazawa city and was responsible for developing it. Oyama Shrine was built in 1873 near the Kanazawa Castle area and also in the same area where the Maeda Family villa existed one time. The old garden from the Maeda family villa still exists in the Shrine precincts, reflecting it's Edo period architecture.
The front entrance to the shrine has a stained glass and shows a mixture of Japanese, Chinese and European styles. It also reflects the cooperation of the culture and commerce between Japan and other countries during the Kaga clan rule. Enjoy!!!

We decided to go explore the Samurai district and look for somewhere to eat lunch. Eventually we found a place to eat (a place that would become the most memorable eating experience of our entire trip). A super friendy lady stepped out of her shop and told us to come in!
We had gyoza and curry... but that wasn't what made the experience so memorable. The lady was obsessed with Adam Lambert. Her walls were covered in posters of him and she was playing his music on repeat. She came over to our table to ask if we knew Adam Lambert, super enthusiastically!!! She then explained all about his success in American Idol and gave us free cookies because we were good customers. I hope one day she gets to meet Adam Lambert, she certainly was his number one fan!
We then explored a gorgeous temple near by called Oyama Jinja Shrine. The gardens were so pretty.

Kanazawa City, Japan ~ Ohmicho Market, Oyama Jinja Shrine & more
Oyama Jinja Shrine ⛩, 尾山神社 Japan ????????
Oyama Shrine ⛩ is dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the powerful, local Maeda Clan. The shrine was constructed in 1599 by Toshiie's successor, Maeda Toshinaga on Mount Utatsu. It was later moved to its present location.
Oyama Shrine is known for its unusual gate, which was designed by a Dutch architect, using elements of European and Asian religious themes. While the first story displays a mixture of Japanese and Chinese influence, the upper stories once served as a lighthouse and feature a Dutch style, stained glass window.
The gate originally guarded the entrance to the palace of Kanazawa Castle and was only later moved to Oyama Shrine. On the shrine, grounds stands a statue of Lord Toshiie. There is also a nice strolling garden with ponds and bridges, designed to resemble harps and lutes. ????????
New Year’s Visitors Throng Oyama Shrine, Kanazawa, Passing through the Distinctive Shin-mon Gate
It is traditional in Japan to visit a temple or shrine during the New Year’s holidays. And some places are especially popular as destinations for these visits, including Oyama Shrine (Oyama Jinja) in Kanazawa, capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. During the New Year’s season it is thronged with visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture. The present shrine dates back to 1873. It was built at the initiative of the Maeda clan, which had ruled the area for close to three centuries. It is dedicated to the clan’s sixteenth-century ancestor Maeda Toshiie and his wife Matsu.
At the time Oyama Shrine was built, Japan was in the midst of a great drive to modernize and Westernize, and this is reflected in the design of the main gate, called Shin-mon (Gate of the Divinities), which incorporates Western elements. This structure is in fact a combination of Japanese, Western, and Chinese styles. The gate has three levels, the lowest consisting of a set of three stone arches and the topmost featuring Western-style windows with colored panes. Unique in many ways, it is considered one of Kanazawa’s architectural icons, and it is a nationally designated important cultural asset.
Visitors enter the shrine by climbing a set of stone steps and passing through Shin-mon; they then proceed to the main building, where they clap their hands in prayer. The shrine is conveniently located in the central part of Kanazawa, and the New Year’s visitors include tourists who have also come to enjoy the holiday in the city’s historic quarters.
