Yamanobe Road（山の辺の道）- YAMATO UNKNOWN ORIGIN
A road running north and south along the eastern edge of the Nara Basin, connecting Miwa Mountain in Sakurai City and Kasuga Mountain in Nara City. It is said to be the oldest road in Japan because it is the oldest road to be mentioned in the Chronicles of Japan. It is a road of about 16 km in length from Omiwa Jinja Shrine in Sakurai City to Isonokami Jingu Shrine in Tenri City, and is known as a particularly beautiful hiking course.

More than ten centuries ago, a capital of Japan existed here.
Several generations of kings of the “Yamato Dynasty” ruled here and expanded their influence outward.
Eventually, Yamato became a word meaning the whole of Japan.
The foundation of Japan was built here.
This ancient capital - older than Kyoto or Nara - did not develop as other ancient capitals did, and thus was left largely untouched.

Kashihara Shrine was established in 1889 to enshrine Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor. It is believed that Jimmu ascended the throne at the spot where the shrine now stands. Despite the fact that it was constructed relatively recently, Kashihara Shrine is an important and very popular shrine. It is situated in a preserved forest sanctuary at the foot of Mount Unebi, one of the three Yamato mountains.
The shrine grounds are extensive which contain pleasant paths leading through the forest that surrounds the buildings. Emperor Meiji donated two buildings from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the shrine at the time of construction. One of the two building is today used as the shrine's main hall (honden), which can be viewed from the prayer hall (haiden) from some distance away.
Hours: 6:30 to 17:00 (It varies depending on season.)
Closed: Opened all year round.

Kashihara Shrine can be reached in a couple of minutes by rental bicycle or ten minutes by foot from Kashiharajingu-mae Station.

山之辺の道は石上神宮を北の起点とし東北から東南へ三輪山まで山すそを通っています。

We rented out bicycles and rode along the road of Yamanobe
(Yamanobe be michi) in the Nara basin, which is the oldest road in Japan.

Yamato Chôshi 大和調子
was composed by Tani Kyochiku 谷狂竹(1882-1950),
a professional shakuhachi-playing monk
and a student of shakuhachi master Miyagawa Nyozan (1868-1946).
He learned this piece as Darani from the Nara shakuhachi player Murata Sen'o, but when he played it for Murata ten years later, Murata exclaimed This is a nice piece, what is it? This comment, indicating that after ten years playing it, the piece had been totally altered. He then named it Yamato-Chôshi (literally, prelude from Yamato). Yamato is another name for Nara, the area in which he had once learned the original composition.
The simpleness and plainness of this piece shine a light
to the beauty of „Wabi-Sabi and leads to a silent mind.
I learned and received this piece from Ikkei Hanada in 2003.
For this recording I used a small micro on my iPod.
It can't record the subtil overtones of a shakuhachi,
but I hope you will enjoy.
