Oyashirazu Geosite - Itoigawa Global Geopark
The cliffs at which the Northern Japanese Alps fall into the Sea of Japan were the product of terrestrial volcanic activity occurring about 100 million years ago. The ancient Hokuriku Road was wedged in a small space between these cliffs and the sea, making for a perilous journey, especially when the waves would surge. Large pockets and caves eroded into the wall where travelers would take refuge from the stormy seas still remain on the face of these cliffs.
During the Heian period (CE 794-1185), following their clan's defeat in the Genpei War, the wife of Taira no Yorimori followed her husband from Kyoto through these cliffs to the Kanbara District of Echigo Province, in what is now Nagaoka City. It was during this journey when her child was swept away by the raging waves. In memory of this, she composed the poem: Oyashirazu ko wa kono ura no namimakura Koshiji no iso no awa to kieyuku From this poem was born the name of these cliffs, Oyashirazu, 'without the parents knowing.'
During the Meiji era, a road was carved out halfway up the cliffs. During the Showa era a tunnel was built through the mountains, forever changing the shape of the Hokuriku Road. Finally, during the Heisei era, the fourth generation Hokuriku Expressway was completed. In addition to these four generations of roads, Oyashirazu also marks the origin of the Tsugami Shindo Road, making this the intersection of many roads from many ages. Here, where the sheer cliffs spread out against the Sea of Japan, gaze upon the many incarnations of the Hokuriku Road and enjoy a stroll along the shore where you just might find some jade!

Kotakigawa Jade Gorge Geosite - Itoigawa Global Geopark
In 1940, Kotaki Jade Gorge was discovered to be the first natural source of jade in Japan. This had a profound effect on the fields of archaeology and geology. It was at this point when scientists confirmed that jade artifacts found in archaeological sites all over Japan originated in Itoigawa, which would from that point on be called The Birthplace of Jade.
The giant stone wall of Mt. Myojo that towers over the gorge was formed about 300 million years ago from petrified coral reef—many coral and sea lily fossils can be found within its rock. When the weather is fair, this wall is a popular challenge for rock climbers. Below Mt. Myojo, one can see large deposits of jade washed by clear waters of the Kotaki River. The colors of changing seasonal foliage paint a beautiful scene on the white walls of Mt. Myojo, making the view here breathtakingly beautiful.
Nearby Takanami no ike Pond, produced by a landslide from Mt. Akahageyama, is said by locals to be the home of a giant fish they've named 'Namitaro.' Behind the pond are the remains of the Kotaki Coalmine, which operated during the first half of the 20th century. The pond itself is a very popular space for fishing, walking, picnicking, or just relaxing with family and friends.

Beautiful Jade Coast Beach, Itoigawa Japan
18th Dec2019 I visited this Jade Coast Beach in Itoigawa, coming from Tokyo by JR pass to Joetsumyoko station and get off at Itoigawa with extra fee charge for 3,120yen for return ticket since thb JR Jass didn't cover Itoigawa stn. It took around 2.5hr from Tokyo and walk half hour to the beach.
This part of beautiful and famous of Jade and stones beach in Itoigawa is full of beautiful varieties of stone and Jade... I loved spending whole day to try my luck searching for jade along the beach and found some of nice one..

The Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark is located along the Sea of Japan in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It sits atop the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, a massive fault line which splits Japan between the Eurasian continental plate to the west and the North American continental plate to the east. This fault line also forms the western boundary of the Fossa Magna, a 6 km deep ‘geological trench’ that consists of the remains of a large sea that once split Japan’s largest island in two. This unique location has created a region with dazzling geological and topographical diversity.

Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line and Salt Trail(nouthern area) - Itoigawa Global Geopark
The Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, which separates Japan into eastern and western halves, runs along the western border of Fossa Magna. The fault line mostly follows the path of the Himekawa River, but between Negoya and Kitaotari it runs along the mountains just east of the river. The area along this fault produced many landslides and topographical basins, resulting in the area's gentle slope seen today. It was by connecting these basins and gentle-sloping areas that the Salt Trail was created. Construction of the road was not without peril, though, as the Himekawa River often floods and landslides are fairly common.
Along this road, various goods from the sea were transported from Niigata to Nagano and exchanged for products like tobacco and cereal grains. One area along the road is known by the name of 'Utou.' The slope here is not natural; rather, it was excavated by the early roadworkers to permit easier travel. In addition to the ruins of old teahouses and guideposts, one can find the remains of an old trade road here.
At nearby Fossa Magna Park, one can observe the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, outcrops, and pillow lava as well as learn about the formation of Fossa Magna.
