El Castillo de Ozu en Ehime, Shikoku, Japón. Ozu Castle, Japan 2016

Ozu Castle (大洲城, Ōzujō) stands on a hill by Hijikawa River in the northwestern part of downtown Ozu. Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) is located in Ehime Prefecture on the western coast of Shikoku. The city emerged during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a castle town. The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon. The castle has its origins in the 1300s, and it was rebuilt a few times over the years upon destruction by fire, as well as natural and human-caused disasters. The current castle has been reconstructed in phases since the 1950s, and the reconstruction of the main keep was finally completed in 2004.
Different from many other castles that were rebuilt in the last century using ferro concrete, the main keep of Ozu Castle was crafted mainly with wood and traditional construction techniques. That skill added the castle more value. As a result, it looks close to the original castle not only from the outside but also inside. The main keep is flanked by turrets on two sides, an interesting feature that is quite rare among Japanese castles, many of which have just solitary standing main keeps.
Inside the castle buildings, there are exhibits about the history of Ozu, maps about the local topography from past to present, models of the castle, and displays of armors and other items belonging to past feudal lords. Ascending to the top of the four story main keep rewards visitors with good views over the city and the river.

Ozu Castle, also known as Jizogatake Castle, was originally constructed in 1331 by Utsunomiya Toyofusa. However, the structure as represented now was built sometime between 1585 ~ 1617. During this period, the castle was controlled by a number of lords.
In 1888 the keep was destroyed by a fire, though the two towers or Yagura, that were connected by corridors to the keep were saved. What remained of the castle survived World War II, even though the surrounding castle town was firebombed. In 2004 the keep was re-constructed, along with the corridors that connected the keep to the yagura.

Japan Trip: Old castle town. Many attractive spots in Ozu, Ehime, Japan
Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) is located in Ehime Prefecture on the western coast of Shikoku. The city emerged during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a castle town. A section of the old town remains today with nostalgic alleys and old-fashioned houses, serving as remembrance both to the days of the Edo Period and the Meiji Period (1868-1912).
There are the following attractions and events.
Garyu Sanso; country-style, yet graceful villa with prominent garden.
Ozu Castle; it has a rare appearance among Japanese castles.
Ozu Old Town; nostalgic atmosphere with old fashioned houses.
The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon.
The picturesque Hijikawa River flows through the heart of Ozu City. This is reputedly one of the three greatest destinations in Japan to see cormorant fishing (ukai) in the summer, along with Nagaragawa River in Gifu Prefecture and Mikumagawa River in Oita Prefecture. Garyu Sanso, a villa that superbly combines aestheticism and serenity, stands just east of the old town, on the banks of Hijikawa River.

While Ozu is mainly known as the little Kyoto of Ehime, Ozu city, however, offers one of the best little Showa period repositories of products, toys and other wonders. Here you can find old Japanese candy shops, toy stores, traditional restaurants and izakayas. Pokopen Yokochou showcases the changing of times as you can see the transformation of Japan after World War II.
While Pokopen Yokochou alley may not always be open for business, the Pokopen Yokochou museum is open all week long and is, as far as we are concerned and after Garyu Sanso, one of Ozu’s best attractions!

Ozu Ohanahan Street Jinrikisha Ride - Ehime - おはなはん通り - 4K Ultra HD
Described by many as the little Kyoto of Ehime, Ozu does not only offer one of Japan's most stunning gardens, the Garyu Sanso but also the chance to enjoy the city in a whole new angle by roaming its historic streets also known as Ohanahan Dori (streets).
While walking around these streets is highly recommended when visiting Ozu, it is possible to visit Ozu’s old town while being comfortably seated in an elegant Jinrikisha (a traditional Japanese rickshaw). Available most of the time all year long, rickshaw rides can be booked, when available, on spot directly from Ozu’s tourist information center.
