Ozu Pokopen Yokochou - Ehime - ポコペン横丁 - 4K Ultra HD
While Ozu is mainly known as the little Kyoto of Ehime, Ozu city, however, offers one of the best little Showa period repositories of products, toys and other wonders. Here you can find old Japanese candy shops, toy stores, traditional restaurants and izakayas. Pokopen Yokochou showcases the changing of times as you can see the transformation of Japan after World War II.
While Pokopen Yokochou alley may not always be open for business, the Pokopen Yokochou museum is open all week long and is, as far as we are concerned and after Garyu Sanso, one of Ozu’s best attractions!

The city of Ozu grew as a castle town during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Like many other cities, the city experienced a period of westernization during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Today, the old town around the city center retains an atmosphere reminiscent of bygone decades, with nostalgic stone-paved alleys and quaint houses of both Edo and Meiji Period architecture. Although they are not open to the public, many old merchant houses and samurai residences remain in the area,
A castle wall lines the river north of the old town for several hundred meters, stretching from Ozu Castle in the west all the way to Garyu Sanso Villa, and reminding of the extent of the castle’s influence during the feudal age. Just south of the walls is the Ozu Redbrick Hall, a remnant of Meiji western architecture. The building functions as a gallery and resting place for tourists was originally a commercial bank.
Access info
Ozu's old town can be accessed in a 20 minute walk from Iyo-Ozu Station. Alternatively, take the city loop bus from the station to Asamoya-mae (あさもや前) bus stop (7 minutes, 100 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), which is located immediately south of the old town.
Omoide Warehouse
It is a small charming museum showcasing retro exhibits from the Showa Period (1926-1989), such as old Coca Cola bottles, household items and toys. The warehouse is part of the Pokopen Yokocho Alley which recreates the ambiance of an arcade in the 1950s. The alley is lined with nostalgic wooden-framed stalls offering small items, desserts, beverages and games. However, the stands are open only on Sundays from April to November and every third Sunday in winter.

SMALL TOWNS in EHIME | Uchiko and Ozu, Ehime
We took a look around a couple small towns in Ehime, Uchiko and Ozu. Both are rich in history so despite being small, there are interesting things to see.
In Uchiko, the Kabuki theatre was the main thing I was interested in. There are also lot of historical homes and a large reclining buddha.
We unintentionally checked out the mountain area of Ozu. We stay at a cool hotel that is a renovated school house. The owner told us about a little musuem about Sakamoto Ryoma and cute little bridges. We wanted to see the castle but couldn't find any parking so only got a look from the outside.
Much love and happy travels

Places to see in Ono City |The Oshozu spring water
The Oshozu spring water is a symbol of “Famous water town Ono City”, groundwater gushes from everywhere. The Oshozu spring water was used for the feudal lord in the past. It is located several minute walk from the foot of the Ono Castle, and it was busy with people as a place for everyday life such as to wash vegetables and laundry. Now that the water supply system has become common and it finished its purpose but the flavorful good water is still loved by people.

As I entered the Ono City History Museum right in front of Ono City Hall, I was surprised to see the model of the good western style sailing ship displayed despite mountain town. You will find that the Ono Domain sold local products to rebuild its economy at the end of Edo Period and they planned to reclaim present-day Hokkaido and Sakhalin.

The Roots of Neorealism: An Inn in Tokyo (Ozu Yasujiro)
Original Title: Tôkyô no yado’; like many other countries, the sound film in Japan did not reach popular acceptance until well into the 1930s, with many directors initially hesitant to embrace the new technology. Only after the success of foreign talkies did companies such as Nikkatsu or Shochiku move decisively toward sound.
Ozu would hold out until 1936’s The Only Son, making more than 20 silents in just over five years, including Passing Fancy (1933) and A Story of Floating Weeds (1934). Both of the latter films feature Sakamoto Takeshi as Kihachi, a character who would return in An Inn in Tokyo, Ozu’s final (surviving) silent picture.
The film tells of the plight of an unemployed father searching for work in and around Depression-hit Tokyo, his two young sons by his side. Thematically, there are many links to be made with De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (below) but, as David Bordwell has rightly noted, “An Inn in Tokyo brings style into prominence through repetitive patterning and parametric variation.” Rather than walking the bustling ancient streets of Rome, Kihachi and his boys roam a flat, industrial desert littered with giant spindles, gasometers and telegraph poles. Ozu returns again and again to shots of the three characters dwarfed by these looming signifiers of modernity.
In keeping with several of the director’s films of the 1930s, An Inn in Tokyo celebrates the vibrance and resourcefulness of children. While their father often appears (understandably) despondent, his two boys are playful and vibrant. It is no coincidence that the film’s most heart-rending moments occur precisely when this enthusiasm is sapped.
Throughout the film, the characters’ few moments of happiness are unfailingly punctured by the harsh reality of their situation. When Kihachi reveals that he only has enough money for food or a room for the night, the sons choose food. Ozu cuts to father and sons hungrily eating rice at a local inn. The two boys – worried that their food will be taken away before they get the chance to finish – literally hug their bowls as they eat. The scene anticipates a similarly poignant passage in Bicycle Thieves when father and son stop off at a trattoria for a meal they can barely afford.
Many familiar Ozu themes (and formal devices) can be found in this neglected masterpiece of 1930s cinema, with the director’s depiction of the parent-child relationship wrapped, as ever, in an air of melancholy. An Inn in Tokyo is more than deserving of rediscovery, not merely as a precursor to Italian neorealism but as one of Ozu’s most beautifully realised works tout court.

Nyoho-ji Temple in Ozu - Ehime - 如法寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Nyoho-ji Temple was originally built by the lord of Kita-gun, Utsunomiya in the Muromachi period (1336 ~ 1573). Closed for several centuries, it was only in 1669 and under the second lord of Ozu Domain, Yasuoki Kato that the temple as we know it today was re-opened.
Nyoho-ji Temple was a family temple of the lords of Ozu Domain, the Kato Family, as well as Ryogozansokeiin. Seven lords were buried at the grave site: the second lord, Yasuoki, the third lord, Yasutsune, 4th lord, Yasumune, 5th lord, Yasuatsu, 7th lord, Yasutake, 9th lord, Yasutoki, and 12th lord, Yasutomi.
