Ozu City (大洲, Ōzu) is located in Ehime Prefecture on the western coast of Shikoku. The city emerged during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a castle town. There are the following attractions and events.
Garyu Sanso; country-style, yet graceful villa with prominent garden.
Ozu Castle; it has a rare appearance among Japanese castles.
Ozu Old Town; nostalgic atmosphere with old fashioned houses.
The recently reconstructed Ozu Castle stands proudly in the city center as the local icon.
The picturesque Hijikawa River flows through the heart of Ozu City. This is reputedly one of the three greatest destinations in Japan to see cormorant fishing (ukai) in the summer, along with Nagaragawa River in Gifu Prefecture and Mikumagawa River in Oita Prefecture. The city of Ozu grew as a castle town during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Like many other cities, the city experienced a period of westernization during the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Today, the old town around the city center retains an atmosphere reminiscent of bygone decades, with nostalgic stone-paved alleys and quaint houses of both Edo and Meiji Period architecture. Although they are not open to the public, many old merchant houses and samurai residences remain in the area,
A castle wall lines the river north of the old town for several hundred meters, stretching from Ozu Castle in the west all the way to Garyu Sanso Villa, and reminding of the extent of the castle’s influence during the feudal age. Just south of the walls is the Ozu Redbrick Hall, a remnant of Meiji western architecture. The building functions as a gallery and resting place for tourists was originally a commercial bank.

Omoide Warehouse
It is a small charming museum showcasing retro exhibits from the Showa Period (1926-1989), such as old Coca Cola bottles, household items and toys. The warehouse is part of the Pokopen Yokocho Alley which recreates the ambiance of an arcade in the 1950s. Its garden incorporates background landscape into itself and offers exquisite combination garden of art and nature. This impressive villa was built around 1907.
Main building; Garyu-in
It is a big, wooden, thatched-roof house. Here there are a few seemingly simple, yet brilliantly conceived rooms. Each room has interesting features, such as elaborately carved transoms, gracefully made lattices, unequally sized tatami mats, tastefully decorated door handles, aesthetically pleasing alcoves and coffered ceilings. One room has a circular window that symbolizes a full moon, while the staggered shelves to its left represent clouds; when the candle on the Buddhist altar behind the window is lit, the window and the shelves resemble a bright moon in the midst of floating clouds.
Garden
Behind the main building is a nice garden, whose strolling path is formed by stone slabs of different shapes and sizes. Within the peaceful surroundings stands Chishi-an, a small tea house that used to be the bathroom of the villa when it was first built. The tea house has a unique squarish entrance elevated above grou.( visitors are not allowed inside.)
At the innermost of the garden stands another thatched-roof house named Furo-an, which utilizes a living tree as one of its pillars. The image of Furo-an resting on stilts above Hijikawa River is celebrated among photography enthusiasts.
On weekends from April through October, tea and a small snack are served here for 400 yen.

Japan: Daiichi Life Insurance Bldg in Tokyo 2013-04-14(Sun)1812hrs
- We see DN Tower 21 (completed in 1995) of The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Limited. The seven-storey company headquarters called Dai-ichi Seimei Kan (lit. First Life House) was co-designed by Jin WATANABE (1887-1973) and Yosaku MATSUMOTO (1890-1990) and opened in 1938. Following Japan's defeat in the Second World War, the building was confiscated and used as the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Allied Powers and it was returned to Dai-ichi Life Insurance in 1952 following Japan's independence. General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) entered the capital city Tokyo of the defeated Japanese on Saturday 8th September 1945. On that very day, he did an automobile tour of central Tokyo that lasted some forty minutes and chose this building for his office amongst several candidates. The building was re-developed as DN Tower 21 from 1989 to '95, the western part facing the Imperial Palace was renovated and preserved to a certain degree but all the rooms inside it, except for Gen MacArthur's office and few others, were demolished and replaced by new ones.

This was one of the typical middle-class town houses in the Hongo district of Tokyo of the Meiji period. It was originally built for Dr. Nakajima, but later Ogai Mori (1862-1922), renowned novelist, poet, critic and army doctor, lived in this house from 1890 to 1892, and then Soseki Natsume (1867-1916) rented it from 1903 to 1905. Here Soseki wrote his famous novel 'I'm a Cat,' which immediately made him the most popular novelist of the time. Therefore, the house was called among Tokyoites the 'House of the Cat'

About Uchiko Wax and Haga family
Uchiko wax was well regarded in Japan at the beginning of the Meiji Period, bringing modest prosperity to the town. This was particularly true of the Honhaga household, Uchiko's main wax producers. The Honhaga and Kamihaga produced the distinctive Crane in the Sunrise label, for which Uchiko became internationally known.
In 1900, when the Honhaga family visited the Paris World Expo to showcase their goods, Uchiko's reputation for high quality wax spread to Europe and America. A new level of success was achieved with average yearly profits totaling over one billion yen in today's currency.

Tokyo Stories: Japan in the Global Imagination
FILM SERIES
November 8—December 7, 2019
From the bustle of neon-lit Shinjuku and its ultramodern skyscrapers to the traditional scenery of Mt. Fuji, cherry blossoms and Shinto shrines, Tokyo has served as a source of creative inspiration for generations of international filmmakers. Anticipating the 2020 Summer Games, when the eyes of the world will once again fall upon Japan’s dynamic capital, this film series considers the ways Japan—and the elusive concept of “Japaneseness”—has been rendered and interpreted outside its borders with a revealing selection of Tokyo-set films by foreign directors, including Japanese co-productions, Hollywood blockbusters and European arthouse favorites.
Tokyo Stories: Japan in the Global Imagination is part of Japan Society’s year-long, institution-wide Passing the Torch series and is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Made in Tokyo: Architecture and Living, 1964/2020, on view through Jan. 26.
