The roof of Africa - Uhuru Peak of Mt Kilimanjaro
The common meaning for KILMANJARO is “shining mountain” in Swahili. Snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, known as the ceiling of Africa, is the highest mountain in Africa and the World’s tallest freestanding structure at an altitude of 5896 meters (19,336 feet) above the sea level and is one of the continent’s most magnificent sights. It rises through lush rainforest, alpine meadows and barren lunar landscape to the twin summits of Kibo and Mawenzi. For most of the trekkers the goal is always to reach Uhuru peak, Kibo’s highest point. From the first summits recorded in 1889 to today, thousands of adventures attempt to climb Kilimanjaro each year, as a spiritual journey, a personal challenge or many other great causes.
“As wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in the sun was the square top of Mount Kilimanjaro”, wrote Ernest Hemingway of this highest mountai situated near the town of Moshi in northern Tanzania. The ascent of Kilimanjaro can be done from six routes: Lemosho, Umbwe, Shira, Rongai, Machame, and Marangu. Depending on which route one wants to use, the climb of Kilimanjaro can take between 5 to 8 days. The two most popular routes are Marangu and Machame. On the Marangu Route, accommodation is in alpine huts while on Machame Route it is camping throughout. While expert guides and porters will accompany you on your climb, unlike Mount Everest, no technical equipment is required.
Hiking on the rooftop of Africa is the adventure of a lifetime, and anyone who is physically fit can scale this snow-capped mountain. Most fit individuals with some mountain walking experience can make it to the top of Africa. You do not need to be super fit – just take it slowly (“pole-pole” the guide will say) and be determined. If you have little previous mountain walking and camping experience and are not sure of your fitness go for the Marangu Route, the easier and most popular route. A mountain guide accompanied by a cook and porters who carry the food, camping equipment and other supplies lead each climb.
